When it comes to character creation, do you prefer a boy or a girl?

Entirely situational, honestly.
Games with customization: Whichever gender/physique has better clothing, or aesthetic choices
Games that don't allow customization, or display worn equipment: Whichever design I like better (whichever is more androgynous)
simple as.
This is interesting.

Personally I'm used to games where each classes is a specific gender + race character so I can manage with any:

In Phantasy Star Online you couldn't make any combination since it was a feature added in PS Universe so if I wanted a human ranger with an affinity with Techniques (aka Magic) you had to take the "Ramarl" (Human Ranger Female) while the Ramar (the male variant) wasn't as proficient with techs.

This incited people to try more than one character and race.

Same with Borderlands where only women could be Sirens:

So you had to take Lilith to have a better affinity with elemental weapons.

Dead Island Riptide also had pre-made characters:

I liked playing as Xian Mei and Sam B for their weapons affinities.

Honestly when I play PSO I tend to go for either the lithe masc bot, or fem bot. Borderlands, Zer0. So I guess my actual reply is: If none are adequately androgynous, I just choose whatever looks the least identifiably human / shows the least skin or features.

I'm conflicted on games that lock their classes behind genders, but also kinda just accept it as a trade-off. Either look good, or play <insert specific role>. Alternatively if they're like Path of Exile, you just kinda zoom on out and voila, more or less problem solved since you won't be staring your chara down most the time anyways. (Same for Borderlands, since first-person).

I know that it may sound a bit "normative" but I'm used to female characters being casters and male ones being more of the melee type.

Of course sometimes the contrary can happen like in Ys Origin where Yunica is a warrior (since in her backstory she couldn't manage to use magic despite her sorcerer lineage) and Hugo is a magician (as he's a proficient scholar that wants recognition despite being in the shadow of his more popular big brother)

And unless the female warrior looks muscular enough to fit that physical role.

I usually go with girls since I get creative with my stylistic choices! If it aint a girl, I go for an android/robot, they are moe AF

It depends on the kind of game, on my mood, on the available equipment... in any case, I don't have a preference.

it depends, most of times i will make a character that id date with

First playthrough always male char, if the game is interesting enough for me to warrant another one then female char as well.

Male and how I want to look like.

It depends on the character, I typically make an actual character that I intend to roleplay in a sense even if that isn't possible. So the decisions I make, how I act in game, it's based on the personality I've written up for the avatar I'm playing. It's usually an even split.

I am an ugly creature of madness, I must create short fat middle-aged balding characters with huge noses

95% of the time female characters, they usually have better customizations or look better overall.

Although in WoW for example, interestingly almost all my characters are female except my main, which is a male troll
