Metroid Fusion is my pick for the greatest game of all time. Not because of any objective metrics or anything like that, but simply because I’ve finished it over 100 times. I remember one Sunday as a bored teenager, I played through it three times in a single day. Back then, I could finish it in under three hours, and I’m pretty sure I could still do it today, just with fewer health and missile containers. My first playthrough took around 15 hours because I got stuck a few times, and I didn’t have the internet back then to look things up.
What makes it special for me is the atmosphere. It plays so well, the graphics are great, and it was my first Metroid game. I loved the oppressive vibe, the constant communication with the computer AI, and the philosophical theme, especially in the ending. The music was memorable, the boss fights were tense, and it just clicked with me in every way. I think it might be my favorite Game Boy Advance game. Actually, it has to be, since it’s my favorite game overall.
It might not be the game I’d take to a deserted island if I could only choose one, but it’s still my favorite. I played it constantly for years, finishing it every few months from when I first got it until maybe six or seven years ago. I still boot it up now and then, but I haven’t fully replayed it. That said, I know I’ll play it again in the future. It’s just one of those games for me.
