NDS What's your opinion on sm64 ds?

I saw a friend play it as a kid an asked for my own copy, got all the stars eventually and caught all the annoying rabbits but never beat final bowser and saw the ending. I liked it but by no means is it on my favorite games of all time list. I would say it was a great launch title for the system.

Why does it not really get talked about? I never played the original so i cant really compare them but why does the 64 version still super popular and the ds one forgotten, I understand the speed running stuff being a lot better on the original but why are all the romhackers using the original over the remake. Is it something about the game? Is it the hardware? something else?
I have the same question what is it that this one doesn't rank as high? Emulation maybe more Nostalgia reach from the OG hmm there's also people just running the game from straight carts that is pretty impressive.

It's Good Version but not Excellent compared to the N64 version you have the possibility to play with more characters than Mario (Luigi, Yoshi (that you play with from the beginning in the DS Version instead of Mario in the N64 Version and Wario), Completely revamped graphics by the standards of the Nintendo DS of the 2004-05 model year and look good considering the limited resolution of the Nintendo DS which is 256x192 Unlike the N64 version which was 320x240 (320x224) If you ignore the horizontal black bars at the top/bottom of the screen, in the playable section that you need to Press Y to run fast because on the N64 that the run is free No need to press any buttons, freedom of movement is limited to 8 directions because the DS uses a D-pad that has 4 directions although it is markable the diagonals can be uncomfortable for some while in the N64 version it used the Control Stick to move freely At the cost of the Control Stick being positioned at the bottom center of the N64's controller which may be uncomfortable for some as well due to the odd design of the N64 controller itself, the controls of the Nintendo DS version were also remapped to be more or less close in the original control scheme of the N64 version which had 9 action buttons (6 Buttons & 3 Triggers) while the DS version which has 6 action buttons (4 Buttons & 2 Triggers) and unlike the N64 version there are now a little more possibilities to position the camera with the stylus but it is still limited as in the original version, of course. and Unlike the N64 version the DS version also features several mini-games and a lot of them unlockable by the minimum amount of stars needed, Multiplayer VS. via Wireless, etc. A Good Version of a Classic but Portable.

I played a ton of this around 2007 or so, and I don't remember but I think I got all of the stars. I remember a couple in Rainbow Ride feeling trickier than they were on 64, but that might boil down to me poorly controlling the game. I think it's okay, as most nintendo stuff is generally well made and fine, but it didn't feel as important at the time as Mario 64 did in 1996. So while I can fire up the 64 version and it puts me right back to that Toys R Us where I first saw it on demo, the DS one makes me think more about where I was when I played it (Maui) than the game itself.

I really like this version of the game. I didn't get a DS until recently so I got to play it with a fresh mind and it was a joy. I think people would be way more into it had Nintendo ported it or included it in a collection with analog movement control at some point. They should never replace the original but it would be nice to get both in a form that felt more on par.

I love how the game looks and how it reimagines some layouts. My only gripes with it is that the different characters just take abilities from Mario away to force you to switch and the extra stars don't add anything substantial to the game, but it's a fantastic game in its own right.

It was actually the first sm64 I played as a kid so I loved it. The new content was pretty good but after playing the original with Puppycam the controls leave a lot to be desired.

I still am sad that you cannot do a full Yoshi playthrough.

Forcing Mario as the only guy able to get to Bowser in the Skies is not a good idea.

I still like it. The D-pad works fine for the DS. I never used the stylus except for the mini games. I liked the new playable characters. The new powerups and stages were cool too. What sucked was only certain characters could use the caps.

...is it safe to necropost this? I apologize in case lol.

I have a nice history with this game. Literally the launch game I got right away when I got a DS back in March 11 2005. Yep, day one alright.
It felt like a superiour more fluid version of the original game. But replaying it more recently I realized...it's not quite like that.
I played the crap out of it and made some good records, but since I felt pressured at the times to sell my games, I only got back my copy only recently.

The framerate and how pastel-like feels on the graphics definitely hasn't sticked well and it's why I would rather choose the original N64 one.

The best highlights are the minigames. But if someone asks I would suggest to play the original game, since the freedom of movement and analogic were the sellings points. And with this version? Touch screen controls! ...that don't feel like that at all. It was really weird. Creative attempt, sure, but weird and a little unreliable.

I remember liking the extra content but hating the controls. The movement didn't feel as tight as the N64 original.

I liked the graphics and how fluid the animations were at the time, but I don’t like how it looks as much now, and I don’t think I’d ever really choose it over the original as an adult.

Though I’ll always respect it for including my childhood hero Wario in his classic iteration in a big 3D Mario game.

Which was still 8 directions. It doesn't magically map the analog (then maybe there are mods for that...?) unfortunately. But we can still pretend it feels better.
Honestly it does feel better to use a stick even for analog movements (like with a fighting game on a d-pad).

At least there's a hack for analog but movement is still good enough thanks to the level design.

I did replayed the whole game on 3DS and, maybe due to force of habit, I feel using the D-pad was more precise since it's the native one. Not to mention you need to press the goddamn Y button to run.

That's not a major issue per se.

Perhaps it's because I'm used to it in 3D Land and 3D World.

If you've played the original SM64 and got used with the analogue stick (and rightfully so): it actually is an issue. The 3D Land/World games have a very different structure on levels and objectives (and you don't have that much freedom unlike in the other main 3D Mario games).

I've played 64 DS after I've tried the original. I do think that the added characters like Yoshi and Luigi are making things easier in a way thanks to their quirks and some stars are more interesting to get.

I think that the maps are also slightly smaller and the behaviour of the enemies are slightly altered to match the control scheme.

The only objective downside from the d-pad is that you cannot do complex speedrunning strats (which are patched anyway).

I think most people are nit picking this port over that d-pad control when it's basically the same as Resident Evil 1's remake allowing non tank controls.

That's cool, but I still think with how the controls were built very weirdly (especially when involving the lanyard and using the finger tip to emulate the analogue...what the fuck, Nintendo) it felt anything but an improvement. It's subjective, so it's ok if you would prefer SM64DS and I can see why. All the additional contents that makes it more juicy.
The minigames definitely made it a lot much worthier. And also Wario as a playable character, even if reduced as being the worst character to play as from how abysmally slow was.

Also, c'mon. It's not just about the controls, but also the artstyle and how it looks. As I'm pretty sure I've already said, SM64DS feels way too much pastel/crayon than the original, something that at first impact didn't bothered me because it was mindblowning back in 2005 having a console like the DS being a portable N64. But then the more I kept playing and switched with the og Mario 64, the more it definitely felt like a downgrade.
