NDS What's your opinion on sm64 ds?

It doesn't surprise me that it gets a lot of criticism for the D-pad, but at the same time it was the version I had as a kid, and I loved it. More characters, more stars, I thought it was the superior way to play SM64. I'm not even sure if I've ever gotten all 120 stars on the N64 version, but I definitely got all 150 on the DS. It's a shame I don't still have my copy.

I prefer it over the original for the simple choice of having a run button to compensate for the d-pad movement. And also Luigi was a very fun if somewhat overpowered character to try old stars in some new ways. I really couldnt stand the more limited moveset of Mario and the greater sensitivity of the analogue movement when i replayed the original some time later. Though a lot of that is still my general frustration with the slope physics that are likely the same in either.

I was really good at that minigame where you were supposed to find a character hidden among other characters
I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't made a full party game.

On the other hand I wish Mario 64 on the N64 didn't have Mario make a half circle just to turn back and having less frames for wall jumping.

Is this a sign to gamble?
Maybe but made me learn how to play poker, blackjack, and roulette but i wish to play it with my friends this minigame with 4 ds and bet with real money instead of my first bad experience on a cheating casino's that accused me of cheating cause of good luck lol Thank you luigi

What an evil Nintendo game!!! This game was sponsored collectively by all the casinos in Las Vegas to brainwash kids just to make them lose their bright future with a gamble that the house always wins lololol.
294px-D'arby_Invites_Joseph_OVA.gif i'm a pro poker guy right now i'm still not broke cause i don't gamble too much fortunately but sometimes i play poker with my buddies than a cheating casino lol

It was the first version of 64 that I played!
My opinion is similar to the popular opinion: it was an odd game to make on the DS, but I loved the new content it added and some of the aesthetic changes it made were good (not all. Bob-own Battlefield looks like a disaster to me, but I love what they did to the previously more simple stages like Wet Dry World).

Nowadays, I swear by 64 on original hardware with the original controller. In my opinion, this is a game where precision is key, and the more movement your stick has, the better. DS isn’t unplayable, but it has clear and obvious issues that make it hard to recommend. I still love it and say “play it if it interests you”, but you need to recognize going in that it won’t be a definitive version of 64. It’s more a variant, and when viewed in that sense, it’s pretty sick!

One final note: why haven’t they built on this 3D Yoshi gameplay?! He handles great here, and all his moves function great! I’ll never get over how Yoshi has been so poorly handled in 3D (even if games like Wooly World still come out to be amazing titles that are worth playing).

I think as a plus version it's very good, I only have things to complain about, that you were forced to play with the pad and especially that they didn't make a port for 3DS where you could use the stick and that you were forced to use the other characters to get the metal powers and transparency.

They N64 remake streak stopped too soon imo...

F-zero X could've gotten one.

I was surprised to see all the reactions online later that so many people struggled with the d-pad, though I think it's probably because most people tried using the DS lite d-pad. I always thought that d-pad was a major downgrade from the original DS design.

I 100% agree, the original ds d-pad is great, its really sad we dont have screen mods for the original ds, playing with that washed out screen is so sad.

I really like it, a good port of an amazing game, so nothing could go wrong there.

I like the stuff they added to the game but the movement never felt right to me so I didn't beat it.

The DS version would be the best version if it had analog controls. The analog controls alone make the N64 version better as SM64 was made with analog controls in mind.
Despite being made with that in mind I find some of the stuff easier, namely the wall jumps.

The Twomp Fortress in Galaxy has proven you could keep these levels with a modernised gameplay.

Although if SM64 got a remake they should make character swapping easier if not instant.

I haven't played 64 DS since it came out on the phat DS. I probably had over 100 hours on it just playing the minigames on bus rides. It was the best minigame collection on the DS. I also got all the stars in the main game, but I prefer the original Mario 64. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the changes they made to the DS version. More characters sounds nice, but I don't like having to swap characters to get certain stars. At the time I didn't mind the D-Pad controls. You just kind of get used to them after a while. It was better than trying to use the touch screen.

I don’t like how Mario controls in most of bud platformers, be it 2d or 3d, Galaxy and odyssey were smoother but they weren’t that interesting. I was told the NDS version was easier to get into but it wasn’t my jam either.

I remember struggling with the lack of analog controls when I first played the game on my DS and not playing very far at that time. I played it with an analog hack years later and enjoyed it quite a bit though. It's a neat twist on an all time classic.
A lot of the tricks you learn on N64 simply don't work on DS.

It's great.
Wish they'd remake/re-release it.
It's the best on Wii U with the full analog patch (patcher is available on the Homebrew store, FYI) that adds support for both left and right sticks.
I never knew this existed, and that's nice. I didn't even know WiiU had DS in Virtual Console. Are there any other DS games which get a significant upgrade on WiiU?

Yeah, the DS VC kicks ass!
Dunno if anything else has a nifty mod/patch/hack like that but I also haven't been through the hombrew shop in ages. It's possible, tho.

Just as title said, since I'm playing it rn :b
I like SM 64 DS alot I like the vibrant green of the grass on the N64 original more tho , but all the things that SM64 DS added I really like I have it physically I play on 3DS also have it digitally on Wii U Virtual Console before the eshop shutdown great game no matter how you're playing it both versions honestly

As far as I'm aware the DS VirtualConsole don't have any upgrades they are just like the original except you can play it on TV with different screen options and a Smoothing Filter you can toggle on or off for the pixels
( Can't purchase DS games on Wii U anymore since the 3DS/Wii U eshops closed though ) Lots of good Memories

In my honest opinion, it's completely unplayable without the analog patch
