There is no lore at all, just a regular enemy at the very first level. She is an apprentice witch who struggles to float on her broom and sometimes falls. Because she is bad at magic, she tries to wack you with her broom and once you defeat her, she turns into a small cat and runs away.
Further in the game, you can meet witch enemies, who graciously fly in their brooms and use magic to attack you, and turn into cats with witch hats when defeated before running away.

Loving all the KOF & SNK art that has been posted! It's easy to appreciate SNK's classic backgrounds and character art, but I was positively floored by the effort that was put into the visuals from KOF XIII. At the time, I thought, "This is it! We're finally using new technology to push pixel art even further! It can only get better from here..."

Then they switched to their current 3D engine for the next KOF games, Samurai Shodown, City of the Wolves, etc.

I know those games have their fans, but - from a purely visual standpoint - I am not one of them

I don't know exactly why but I like the sprites of the NES version of Prince of Persia, even more than the DOS version.

Duke Nukem and the Doom guy are also kickass! I don't know why but I used to think they were related when I was a kid...

I also like the SOTN sprites of Alucard.

Splatterhouse is my favorite game, I couldn't absent it from this list. I love both arcade and the PC Engine sprites.

Mickey Mania, specially the Mega drive version, I *chef's kiss* love those sprites.

Aladdin is absolutely one of my favorite SNES games, the sprites are very colorful and beautiful. As far as I can remember, this is the first SNES game I successfully emulated on my PC

The Mega Drive Aladdin is one of the most beautiful games for Mega Drive in my opinion. It's loyal to the movies

I for one consider Quack Shot is also one of the most beautiful games for Mega Drive. Back in the days I used to have its cartridge though

3 Ninjas Kick Back... I don't think this game was much popular, but I used to play it a lot with my friends. It's a graphically beautiful game!

The SNES Power Rangers

This example is not regarding a retro game, but I think Sonic Generations is a beautiful game. When I was 5yo I used to play it on my Xbox 360, and since then I've grown to admire its graphics

Alright everyone i talked many times about sudden strike games but never showed any gameplay footage suffice to say this thread is the most right one to show this game marvelous sprite work

Behold my old footage regarding sudden strike

6th army at stalingrad this attack force would lose most of its components mostly tigers reaching the volga.

Above is the only sudden strike 1 image

The rest is sudden strike 2/resources war

American troops during the ruhr pocket opreation

A deadly engagement between a Pershing and a tiger ensued resulting in the Pershing coming out victorious but receiving severe damage

5 brave tigers rush forward to meet the americans during Germany 1945 campaign despite their brave efforts they are overwhelmed and destroyed by the endless tide of american steel

An infantry engagement between German engineers and soviet infantry across the street in kiev 1941 resulted in the death of many German engineers....

My 2 elite Tigers these tank accompany you for 3 missions straight if i remember i lost them in mission 3 and the crews all KIA

Sudden strike allows for the creation of gruesome battles like seen above this is the result of constant soviet attacks on German positions during siege of kiev 1941

Me modding soviet vehicles to do this

Hands down some of the best sprite work i seen so clean and so nice to look at mods can never replicate the masterpiece of graphics fireglow made.

Man it's been a year since i last played this game i miss American soldiers yelling "i won't give in!" when getting shot at or the many explosion sounds i have them drilled in my head but hearing them is something else

Sonic Advance Trilogy's art design is peak Sonic Style. Sonic Battle also counts.

Anyone who grew up on mid-2000s Flash/Spirte animation websites such as Newgrounds and Youtube will understand the absolute CHOKEHOLD this style had on Sonic fan content up until the late 2010s.

Also honorable mention goes to Mega Man in the 5th generation. Mega Man X4 is the GOAT for me, and the sprite art is a big factor. Mega Man X5, X6, 8 and Bass while not as good, still look phenomenal (especially M&B by virtue of beign a last-gen game using PS1 Game Sprites)

Lastly, the Minish Cap is my favorite Zelda game in terms of artstyle and Graphics, especially in the Shrunken Parts:
