2d models on a 3d backgrounds/ environments = win. Breath of Fire 3/4, Strider 2, Tomba, Persona 1 and 2 (both parts), Xenogears, Tales of Destiny directors cut, panzer bandit, mad stalker (PS1) there's loads. Quite a few strategy RPGs did it on PS1 too, and they all look great and stand the test of time because of the pixel art being solid.It is not a sprite art per se, but sprite style, I love 32-bit pixel art specially when made in 3d consoles, like the following, I don't know, but low poly environment with pixel art characters and details gives a mystical tone to it.
