I feel like there's always quite a few different takes on this. Admittedly I haven't played a ton of the games (which is partially why I'm making this thread!), but my favorite is Vice City. I really liked the isometric originals when I was younger, but the 3D games were way cooler. San Andreas was fun but I always felt like it ran a bit slow on my PS2, compared to Vice City which was smaller but way smoother. GTA5 wasn't really my thing. Not that it's a bad game in any way, but it's so huge and open, and I just didn't get the same feeling from it as some of the others. Thus why I don't plan to pick up GTA6 any time soon.

GTA 5 for the gameplay, GTA Vice City for the story.

Vice City for the, as much as I hate how the word has been used lately, vibe. The location, cars, music, story, they're all great. When I want to play a GTA game I'd always go for that one even though SA undoubtebly has the better gameplay of that trilogy.

Vice City.

First GTA I have ever played — will play it forever.

i loved china town wars, despite it being isometric. i used to stay up late at night making drug deals and driving around listening to the radio.

San Andreas for me

too hard to answer - i love the original top down gta , and gta 2 , i adored gta3 , vice city for the music , same with san andreas but for the size and the music , wasn't crazy about gta IV but loved lost and the damned and ballad of gay tony , and gta 5 online was one of the best times playing a game i ever had

Fun fact: Back when Vice City was the new hotness, I got a copy of it for free under the agreement of being interviewed for an article on video game violence in a women's magazine..
Long-story-short. A couple weeks later, the lady interviewed me for over an hour while I played the game in front of her. Months later, the ONLY quote of mine that ended up in the published multi-page main article was the opening line in large, bold print:
"FIRST WE HAVE TO KILL A BUNCH OF PEOPLE" said 17 year old [redacted].
(Context: I was asked something about having a shoot-out with the police. So I needed to get the "wanted" stars up. "How?" I was asked. My answer was the aforementioned quote)..

I still have a copy of that specific magazine. The article itself was surprisingly balanced, but I've had a permanently poisoned view of legacy media whit large ever since then..

You still played the game after that interview?

Oh, fuck right OFF.

I HATE it when they do that, but it's sadly nothing new — got interviewed once and they only used two isolated quotes from me -.-*

Saints Row 2.

More seriously I also liked Chinatown Wars for its more arcade-like gameplay (similar to the first two entries).

I kinda miss the scoring and video game aspect of the game.

GTA Vice City. The entire game has an 80s aesthetic, which perfectly suits my taste.

Vice City and it's not even a contest.

I do like GTA2 as well, being that it kept that interesting top down view.

Of course! Off & on until it (and a bunch of other stuff) was stolen a year or two later..

Yeah, it certainly opened my eyes to the practice; so there was that. That was 22~23 years ago at this point, and my skills of pattern-recognition have only become more refined since then..
It's part of the reason why I prefer unedited, long-form interviews over the curated BS that legacy media outlets put out..
