To me it's either Angel's Egg or Patlabor 2.
Pretty much anything by Mamoru Oshii. His movies are gorgeous while also having subtle commentary in them that I enjoy.

Loved Vampire Hunter D the original, and Bloodlust. Still watch them again from time to time. My favorite ever would probably have to be both Midnight Eye Goku movies. It's just the subject matter that captivates me the most. Plus i'm a sucker for anything late 80's early 90's Madhouse.

I loved the Nadesico series and I watched the movie, but I have no memory of it. It's the damnedest thing but the film is just a blank. I do recall I didn't think it was a good finale but no other details.

Throw in another point for Patlabor 2, that movie really was something else.

You had great characterizations, good dialogue, a critique of government handling of a conspiracy (in early 90s Japan!), character driven drama and well paced and staged action with an intelligent plot that developed as the movie went on.

The giant robots were pretty much an aftertought.
