I've been replaying some classics lately and it got me thinking — plenty of retro mechanics aged badly (tank controls, I'm looking at you), but some of them I genuinely wish modern games would borrow from.
For me, it's the way old platformers made you figure things out on your own. No quest markers, no NPCs telling you exactly where to go. Games like Mega Man or the original Zelda just dropped you in and said "good luck." There was a satisfaction in discovering secrets through trial and error that I feel like we've lost.
I also miss lives and continues as a real mechanic. I know "no game overs" is more accessible, but having limited continues added real stakes.
What about you? Any old mechanic you think deserves a comeback?

The Bump System in Ys.

I always wished the modern entries had some secret mode after you beat the games had it as a feature or something to spice up replay. Not sure how it'd work there, but I sure do miss and love that system.

If that doesn't count, I'd bring back those wonderfully silly costumes you get as bonuses in clearing survival horror games. Something like
Heather's mahou shoujou costume

Since I always play old games and master some weird mechanic wonky

Here my list of bringing back that I noticed on newer generation

Bring back good old cheat code like the Konami code press certain button to activate the debug or secret

The old rpgs had different battle system look at the ps1 era not all are like FF or dragon quest take a look like Valkyrie Profile, Azure Dreams Vagrant Story, Legend of Legaia Grandia they have thier own style that modern rpgs try to copy them

Bring back the point and click adventure I know some people though is slow but I really like slow pacing games I'm big fan those gorgeous 2d background sprite animation I wish it got Renaissance

The old survival horror this one is really big for me I really like the old horror games like RE, Dino Crisis, Galerians Clock Tower and Echo night I just really big fan of atmosphere here I am not a big fan of modern Horror is too dark rely of jump scare and I really don't like the realistic look I prefer the low polygon body horror look at Clock Tower and Hauting Ground my two favorite Horror games of all time you see why I like it.
