What’s a good game that didn’t age well in your opinion?

I genuinely think that Infinite will age less well because of how it felt more like your average modern FPS with only two weapons at a time and how the convoluted multiversal plot made it too headscratching for its own good to the point it feels more like faux-deep than making a real point like Andrew Ryan's Rapture.
While I enjoyed Infinite, I found Columbia far less interesting as a setting when compared to Rapture. I also found Comstock far less interesting than Ryan and Lamb. And yeah, the plot was a lot more convoluted. It still has some very memorable moments, I still very much like the game, but it's not on par with 1 and 2. That said, I didn't really enjoy protecting the Little Sisters in 2. So many combat encounters just boiled down to setting traps every single time. It was almost like every enemy encounter that involved a Little Sister was a tower defense mini-game. I still think the first game is the strongest overall even if combat was improved in 2.

This game next to Duke Nukem 4ever are two of my biggest disappointments in gaming (and coincidentally in FPS).
I remember some people saying DNF should've been canceled. I'd always prefer a game get released, regardless of how bad it is, than get canceled. I'm always curious about games in development hell. Even if they're bad, I find them interesting.

I do agree about the memorable moments but I'll say that making a plot more complex doesn't make it automatically better, Resident Evil, MGS and Kingdom Hearts suffered from that but thankfully they managed to make a cohesive overall plot that can be summarised for most.

Speaking of the -shock games I found myself appreciating System Shock Remastered, these give a new coat of paint which make them more agreeable to play today.

I'll admit that Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and the three Turok games didn't age the best on the actual hardware (as much as I love the first two) and the XBLA/PC remasters helped making them shine again.

The ending to Bioshock Infinite was incredibly unsatisfying. It definitely didn't deliver like 1 and 2 in that regard. I really liked the opening, the Lutece twins, Elizabeth singing "Will the Circle be Unbroken," etc. It has some moments, some characters, that I really enjoyed even if it's the weakest in terms of narrative, in terms of level design, etc.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the System Shock remake. Given the age of the original, that was one game that really needed a remake. I can't wait for the System Shock 2 remaster. That's one of my favorite games. I hold late '90s/early '00s PC gaming -- especially the first-person games that were being released back then -- in high regard, and System Shock 2 was part of that era of PC gaming.

I agree with you on the N64 games. I can still go back and play those games and enjoy them, however they haven't aged as well as Halo: CE and Halo 2. Those were the first FPS games on console that felt just right to me in terms of controls.

Somehow my issue about Halo is that the character is really slow and holding only two guns at once and the "regenerative health" made me like modern FPS less than PC ones.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark had challenge and you could carry as many guns as you wish.

I get that. Resistance: Fall of Man was enjoyable back in the day because it was difficult, didn't have regenerative health -- at least not in the same way, and allowed you to carry a ton of creative weapons. Then Resistance 2 came out and changed that, limiting you to 2 weapons... :cry:

Stunt Race FX on the SNES. It was mind-blowing at the time but the ~15FPS it gets really kills it these days. It gets somewhat more tolerable with hacks to overclock the SuperFX but dang. I think I wore out a controller back in the day trying to get records and now it just makes me disappointed.
 
controversial opinion, but zelda ocarina of time and majora's mask to some extent too.
it's a slog to get the ball rolling. about the first quarter of the game is so slow and tedious that i always just try to speedrun through it until you open the temple of time. then the game really begins.
i've played less mm, but it starts to get good around the time you get the goron mask sorely because you can at least move faster. it helps that most of the things you can do are optional, so you can skip some of the slow and boring stuff.
and this comes from someone that likes and actually enjoys the water temple.

in later zelda games, say twilight princess, the start is a little better because the tutorial dungeons are more enjoyable.
 
Pick any old RTS, once you know how good pathfinding looks like, you ain't going back unless its for nostalgia.

Sadly on the Internet if you dare pointing even the smallest flaw to one of the holy grails of gaming you cannot really get away with it...

The framerate is my only issue about the game.
 
IMHO, a good game is a good game regardless of its age. If a game has "aged badly", that means it was always bad.
thats what i was gonna say. There were a couple of annoying things about early console rpg menus but most of that was due to having limited buttons.
 
Massive gut punch here, but Metal Gear Solid 1.

I did not have a fun time with this game, save for a few parts. I had no issues with MGS2 or even MGS3 for that matter. Lack of first person view in guns, and the times you do have first person view the camera is all over the place. Infinite respawning enemies, and oh yeah, THAT ROOM WITH THE NUKES, YOU KNOW THE ONE. Oh yeah, and the game overs last forever (that alone made me not touch SOTN). The game does have some interesting things and nice details, but when it comes to combat and even stealth, it's pretty rough. I respect the game for what it did and I love the sequels, but the first game is one I don't plan on coming back anytime soon.
 
For me, i gotta say mgs3. Just for the controls, which is weird since the controls for the 1st and 2nd game were really intuitive

Bless the h.a.n.d Developers for trying to take KH2 PS2 combat and port it on DS but... it's DS

It's extremely ambitious! GREAT narrative and story dragged by the hardware limitations!

It's one of my fav KH Games but the fact it's on DS is making it age so badly!


I really wish the game was made in PSP instead!

With Kingdom Hearts Re:coded they made a HUGE leap in progress with the DS hardware

MOST SMOOTH KH portable combat and I'm not even kidding, 100% better command system than Birth by Sleep!
 
There’s no lock on for some weapons and instead it’s a clunky first person view for aiming. The game can also be unfairly difficult in some parts of the game, such as the Expresso 2 Go mission and the Final Mission. Cars blow up way too easily, Shotguns are very overpowered in this game, the police are relentless, enemies can chip away your health in seconds, and the handling on vehicles suck. There’s really no reason to play GTA 3 today over it’s future installments.
Sounds like you just don't like a good challenge. What would the point of lesser weapons like the ak and uzi be if the M16 could simply lock and snap to targets? Should the game get easier just because you have more tools? How is it bad design to have more tools fulfill more purposes? The M16 is killer at taking on incoming cars or taking out funneled enemies. AK gives good lock on power and the Uzi gives you mobility. As for Espresso-2-Go the timer only starts after you destroy the first stand. You can take as long as you want, drive around all 3 islands to find all the stands and they will stay on your radar. The timer only kicks in after you attack. The handling is also great! Practice your braking!

New-gamers these days I swear. Wouldn't want a single ghost in Pac-Man or a single pit in Mario. The inconvenience IS the challenge. That cop car that keeps riding your ass? Its AI is programmed to overtake you and you can use this to your advantage by swerving! Memorization is a skill, practice it by learning where the bribe locations are.

The game even gives you an indestructible car well before Espresso-2-Go addressing one of your key complaints! A challenge isn't bad design, challenge is the whole point! Now get back to practicing.

If you ever thought of that, it means that you finally become old enough to not be blinded by nostalgia and probably should consider leaving videogaming soon. ::linkmouthcover

And there's again the whole "good games are untouchable" argument that I was talking about earlier.

Ocarina of Time is a good action/adventure game but let's be honest for a second: it doesn't have voiced lines compared to Metal Gear Solid, Symphony of the Night and Half-Life and the framerate being at 30-35 is objectively a thing that hasn't aged well about the game.

Same things can be told about many other games. SotN and the long game over screen, MGS having too many dialogues for a video game and maybe even Final Fantasy VII having filler-ish moments and minigames that breaks the pace a bit.

oot runs at 20fps max.
it actually feels amazing on ship of harkinian at 30fps. though, the other problems i mentioned before still stand.
Yeah oot is 20fps locked, it drops below it once in a while. It's very jarring when going from a 30fps game to oot.
