I kind of had the same moment like this. I replayed the Arkham games last year and it hit me that Arkham Knight is now more than a decade old. It's hard to believe since it looks better than even some newer games. It just hit home for me that graphically games have looked really good for a long time now that I no longer see any obvious advancements in the new games. It used to be that you could tell apart games that were released a few years apart(at least for games that are going for a realistic look rather than a stylized one) but now it just gets harder to tell them apart to the point I find it hard to believe a decade has gone by.

Was going through Halo from CE to Reach co-op with a buddy, we were quoting Arby 'n' the Chief, and Red Vs Blue the entire time.

I was about to say that, to me it isn't old games that make me feel old, but the more recent ones in which I keep imagining myself as this 20-something guy, when in fact I've already gone through my whole 30's. I feel just like you, there is no difference. Playing games from the last 2 generations is more pleasant than any other game that might release right now, even GTA 6.

I recently finished replaying Golden after 3 years, and it was a bit surreal. Back when I first played, I was the same age as the protagonist. Now I'm a good bit older, and it's like "wow, I'm aging further than this main cast ever can." Maybe that sounds a little silly. Anyway, I'm not very old at all, but high school life feels both recent and distant, so playing this again felt like a nice trip down memory lane.

I was just about to answer with this one. As a massive Vita fan it frustrated me that everytime I tried this game I just fell off of it for one reason or another. I've been trying to fall in love with it for over 10 years and this latest playthrough it finally clicked for me and I loved it. It dawned on me so frequently that people just don't talk like this anymore and that so much of that game is a time capsule in countless ways. It also just felt odd that I started trying to love this game when I was like 19 years old and now I'm 31. I went from feeling so personally connected to the high school setting and teenage cast in a sort of "they're my peers" kind of way to suddenly feeling this nostalgic "Wow this actually is kinda how it felt being an aimless teen back in the day". It helped me appreciate the writing and the connections the cast make to one another a lot more and now that I'm both nostalgic for the way everyone talks and the system that I played it on it hit me in a totally new yet comforting way. As someone who grew up in a very small town in the midwest where the geography isn't super unlike Inaba it resonated really hard. With 10+ years of hindsight on my youth the game felt like more of a mirror than I'd have been willing to admit back in the day.

It is one reason I don't really care about the remake, personally. Persona 4 but with modernized dialogue just doesn't feel right. I love that it is a time capsule of being young in 2006-2008, at least when it comes to the English localization. I have my gripes so of course there are things I'd have changed about the writing/story but as with all things those flaws/differences of opinion are part of what make it such an interesting time capsule.

For sure! Inaba was the perfect setting for the aimless feeling, being rural and all. As for the characters, Yosuke in particular is pretty abrasive, but I like that about him. He's flawed in so many ways, like in the first dungeon or during the school trip. But those flaws make me love his character even more, and (like you said) the time it encapsulated. The remake changed some dialogue already of the original localization... I had that issue with Reload too, but I'll check it out because I love comparing things.
