Anime What was your introduction to anime?

Aside from the anime that was airing on public tv, (DBZ, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.)
The first was the melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, a friend recommended it to me and i fell in love with it, it started my middleschool obsession on anime and manga

I need help

Naruto and Bleach were running on TV at just the right time for me to both understand and find solace in the over-the-top violence: middle school.

Hell yeah. Naruto started airing in the US for me right late 4th grade or early 5th grade. I remember me and the boys used to reenact it at recess.

A friend and I made origami shuriken out of printer paper, then fortified them with duct tape and fought in good spirits with them at recess!

Anime was part of the regular broadcasting here rather than being contained in a block. The first anime I remember watching was Saint Seiya, known as Knights of the Zodiac in some places.

Same here, ever since the 70s jap cartoons have been mainstream in italy, you can buy the intro song on vinyl records and my mom and any other 50 year old knows or watched Lupin, Candy Cany etc

Those americans act like they discovered it or something pft ::cool

either digimon on fox kids or hamtaro on cartoon network, i was a 96 kid so my anime exposure was all over the place. but fox kids/fox box/4kids, dic, and kidswb all kinda got me into anime along with CN/Toonami and adult swim.

Yup, we've been blazing the trail sooner, way sooner haha.

Technically? Original Dragonball on fox when I was like 2.... I'm not old you're old

Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D and BioHunters of all things; And then DBZ on Toonami.

My first exposure to anime (Technically it was Pokemon) was through 4kids/Kids WB of all things. After learning One Piece, Naruto, Sonic X etc. was censored, I got curious and watched them subbed and I've been hooked ever since.

Evangelion is incredible, but it led me to feel really depressed for a while, no joke LOL.
You and me both. I think that's why it sticks with people so long! I went FULL existential crisis mode. Though watching it nowadays, I really don't get why.

Can't remember my first anime series, but the first anime movie I watched, not knowing it was anime at the time, was Space Firebird aka Phoenix 2772 dubbed in Dutch. That would have some where in the mid Eighties or so.

Later on I'd find out it was anime and go on to watch Akira on VHS in 91/92, and would soon start buying UK VHS releases.

What was the anime that got you started, that made you a fan, that brought you into the fold?

For me it was Sailor Moon all the way back in 1995.

Either Speed Racer, Dragon Ball (z) or Tekkaman Blade (Technoman here in the States), although I could've been exposed to other anime without being aware of it. Those are the first things I was aware of being Anime, or Japanime, which no one called it, except for a series of commercials from ADV I think, and Otacon of course.

Specifically, Dragonball Z.
More broadly, Toonami on Cartoon Network in like '98/'99. Toonami was such a huge gateway to anime for so many people my age in America. So much nostalgia.

Thought about it some more and it must have been either Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon, not sure which came first. The first anime I was actively a fan of was definitely Cowboy Bebop though.

Sailor Moon held the same role for me as it did for most adolescent boys back then, I'd wager.

Dragon Ball meanwhile lost kid me during the Cell saga. I still distinctly remember being creeped out by the android's brutality in the manga.
Goku did end the original Dragon Ball by bursting through a dude's chest if I remember correctly though, so I'm not sure where kid me drew that particular line.

Watching DBZ with my brother was my first exposure. Watching Pokemon made me like it somewhat. I think what truly made me fall in love with the medium was Kino's Journey (the 2003 one).
