Anime What was your introduction to anime?

I saw the scene in this where Haruko and Naota's dad are eating the egg off one another when I was about 4 years old, in the dead of night, completely clueless as to what was going on. I should sue AS for damages.
It made you who you are today, honor your past warrior.

I also rented every single Anime movie from blockbuster as soon as I was an older teen and was allowed to watch whatever I wanted. My dad watched Akira with me and was shocked by the level of gore and violence in these cartoons. It was the era of ultra-violent gory anime movies.

But during that era the place to be as an anime fan was the tape trading subculture. Either online or through 3rd parties. I went down a rabbit whole about the fan sub/tape trading culture and there were anime groups in universities across the US and Canada that would use video editing software to subtitle recordings of Japanese Anime. And would trade these online and spread them all across North America. There was a comic book store with a bootleg anime rental section in my hometown with many of these fan subs. And we would be able to rent anime shows that hadn't been released in North America. It was good times.

Renting was a cool thing back in the day. Fond memories of going to Blockbuster/Hollywood Video to grab a new game and movie for the weekend. Not to mention the adjacent gaming store connected to it. I think Spirited Away was the first anime film I can recall watching.

Other than perhaps Pokemon. My introduction came to anime in the form of Toonami. T.O.M. was the man giving us great shows like Rurouni Kenshin, Prince of Tennis, Naruto, DBZ, etc. I truly don't remember which iteration of Toonami I started with but I will always remember the MVP below. How were you introduced to anime? Whether dub or sub. I like both.

I have very little knowledge of Sgt. Frog but based on the quick search I just made of him I'm gonna probably check it out, haha. Nice list man.

2004. I watched for as long as I can remember. It aired on spacetoon. Anime basically never felt foreign. Had tons of classic from my childhood back in 2005 like dragon ball, hunter x hunter, slam dunk, one piece, captain tsubasa, detective Conan and the list goes o

It's a comedy anime about some Aline frogs trying to invade earth but are district by just anything I say give it a try it's a fun classic

Yousef do you remember an anime about a kid how plays volleyball or something do you know the name of it if you remember
I know about Haikyuu

For me, it was watching Teknoman Blade (or like, actually Tekkaman which its known as now) on TV. It was a Saban dub iirc and wildly aired in the morning with minimal editing. First time seeing blood in a 'cartoon' before school.

Then my brother hired out Akira and I watched that. I largely missed the entire Pokemon wave of the late 90s because by then I was already deep in Evangelion and other heavier anime.

Ronin Warriors.jpg

Before Toonami in the early 90s it was first Ronin Warriors, then Voltron, Battle of the Planets, Samurai Pizza Cats, Bubblegum Crisis, Robotech, Salior Moon, Dragon Ball, Teknoman, Escaflowne.

sailor moon. the effect that show had on me as a child was tremendous. less the actual show more so the community around the show i guess. i would frequent early web dress up games, make fan art (soooo much fan art)
i remember begging my mom to buy these ugly little sailor moon dolls from ebay (if you know sailor moon merch you know all the licensed dolls are.... interesting) and they happened to come with one of the movies on dvd, i would watch that dvd over & over & over again lol

I'm showing my age but:

So, there were many anime shows on TV that I adored when I was a child, like Saber Rider, Robin Hood, Treasure Island and Lady Oscar. Pokemon came a few years later but I never got into it.
At the time though I had no clue that those were "anime", they were just cartoons to me. It wasn't until the year 2000ish when Japanese pop culture enjoyed a massive boom that I became aware of the term and actively sought it out. The first anime I watched where I knew it was anime was then Spriggan, closely followed by Akira. Much too young to understand the movie but it blew me away just the same. I benefitted from that boom massively because now there were shows like Angel Sanctuary, Cowboy Bebop and Agent Aika on tv all the time. Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Yugioh, Detective Conan and the likes during the afternoon when I came back home from school.
Anime fans slightly older than me had it really bad. You could basically only buy single episodes of a show on vhs for ridiculously inflated prices and if you were lucky enough to have internet at all the connection was too slow and expensive to download more than maybe one episode of Cool Devices at a time. Btw that series was my introduction to a certain subgenre of anime. If you know you know ?

In Italy, at the beginning of 2000, there were three channels that broadcast anime the most: Italia 1, Cartoon Network through Toonami, and subsequently also Boing (which had the rights to broadcast some Warner Bros cartoons, and therefore Cartoon Network, but also anime being owned by Mediaset).

As a child I remember seeing my first anime there: Doraemon, Magical Doremi, Lady Oscar, Love Me Knight - Kiss Me Licia, Keroro, Nanako SOS and Pollon
(the last 2 both created by the same author. I looked for information about him on Wikipedia... my childhood died in the first few lines).

Then… I saw my first mature anime in 2015, complete on YouTube with Italian subtitles: School Days. And later, Corpse Party. My life would never be the same again, xD

Either One Piece or Naruto on TV, but back then I treated them on the same level as SpongeBob or Danny Phantom. What made me get into the anime scene was when my friend recommended both Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan back in 2013. From there we created some kind of our own anime club where we traded anime with each other using our shitty flash drive.

What was my introduction to Anime?
Unconsciously to it being anime: it was either Pokemon or Dragon Ball, or Alfred Jodocus Kwak, by just watching TV. No idea which I would have seen first though.

Consciously of it being Anime: a friend told me you could watch 'Avatar: The last airbender' online, which led to me watching Naruto, because it was featured so prominently on the anime streaming website's homepage.
And then an Anime called Air Gear, I just picked that one because all anime on the site was listed alphabetically so it was near the top, and i thought it sounded cool. It's still among my favorite anime for that reason (nostalgia).

For my entire childhood I didn't have cable TV just antenna so there were only a few channels and all local. There was one that was broadcasted on a national level and had a show on the afternoons where they will present some anime series.
I can't remember which was the first one I saw but it's between these 3:

Dragon Ball.

Speed Racer(Here called Meteoro).

The Slayers(Here called Los Justicieros).

I remember as a kid I used to make fun of anime fans until my brother sat my ass down and made me watch JoJo's. That shit was eye opening. Now I only make fun of My Hero fans.
Character development, or something.
No worries friend, every good story has a deuteragonist.
