What was your first trainer's name?

Edgy teen wannabe around the late nineties(pokemon red), while I'm not sure of the exact name, considering some of the names i used in other games of the era it will probably be something like Buttz, Anal, etc.
buttz isn't very edgy. that's the name of the protag from final fantasy 5.

I know, I was playing with the double entendre, language pun, etc.
i see that, but it is a bit funny that "buttz" was a serious name choice in a mainline rpg game, and you picked it for fun when you were a kid playing a game about monsters that fit in your pocket.

The thing is, I never played FFV during is heyday only around the early 2000 messing with Zsnes and later in those gba remakes.

i don't think i ever got to play a final fantast game during its release. 5 is pretty fun to play. lots of subtle and hidden mechanics to discover.

for some reason, someone at game freak decided that player characters had to be realistic. that's why they have boring names and nowadays, boring designs. when i first saw lyra, i was convinced by her design alone that she was someone's fan fiction daughter character of mario.
when i learned that she replaced crystal for the remakes of gold and silver, i was extremely pissed off.
oh true ...
i guess they figured come up with some regular names to relate to the target audience they were meant for lol

ah now that you mention it ... yeah wth ! ... first time i played hgss in 2010 i was surprised that practically introduced a new character since i was thinking they'd just keep kris around ... not create virtually a 3rd player character ... having lyra kinda did break the 2 playables and a rival scheme i thought they were gonna keep after gen 4 ... it sure got more complicated story-wise :(

no, they got rid of crystal because she was a "product of her time". too 90's looking. and having blue hair was "unrealistic", in a game where 10 year olds leave home unsupervised to tame monsters that blow up cities and planets and fight the mafia, militant extremists and eco warriors.
... yeah, blue hair is the unrealistic part that goes too far.

I always thought that getting to name yourself (and your rival) was one of the coolest parts of any Pokemon game, and I have had a lot of fun with that over the years, naming my foe after people I didn't particularly like IRL and naming myself as the nickname my friends gave me (which used to be my online moniker, and so it won't be revealed here. Sorry).

When I first played Yellow (my first Pokemon game), all I wanted was to be Ash and so... I named myself Ash, and the rival got to be Gary, of course.

Later I went by my real name, but that's not here nor now.

What about you?
I think the first Pokemon game I ever played was Pokemon Stadium with some cousings when we used to get along and on that time, I didn't knew English that well. But I saw that "Player" was the one I was when selecting my Pokemon, so when I played FireRed and then SoulSilver I used Player as a name, and when I got well on English, I used the names of the protagonists based on the mangas according to a friend who introduced me into the mangas.

First game was Sapphire, I used (and continue to use) my real name in every new gen. It's like my player character is going from region to region like in the anime.

i would disagree with part of the anime comparison. you presumably won when you got to the end game.

I'm in the Ash/Gary camp as well, lol.
Kids ?‍♂️?

I honestly have no idea. My guess is my first name, but that was just so long ago... I do remember my first Pokemon ever (Cyndaquil) being named Thasher. I meant to name him Thrasher but typo'd and had no idea the name rater existed.

That's completely stupid imo. Especially when Dawn also had blue hair.

Red and Gold are also typical 90's kids in their respective designs.

I'm still fan of Leaf's design in FRLG.

yeah, i noticed that too.
yet, they get to keep their looks. interesting, isn't it?
i agree, leaf has a very good design. she fits right in to the kanto region..

My first game was Pokemon Ruby.
My first trainer was a female character whose name was: Anus.

My idea was: Talkative Anus.
But there was space for 7 letters only.

My rival name: Dick.

All my anus characters are great especially against people like Dick.

Well, maybe these designs are more timeless? I dunno.

I'm wondering, what made Kanto that different from Johto? One being more technological while the other is more traditional?

I really wish we got a game set in Tōhoku...

red and blue are just wearing normal clothes. simple and practical shirts and jeans. sometimes, simple outfits work the best.
every region in pokemon is based on a real world location. if i remember correctly, kanto and jhoto are real locations in japan. same goes for hoenn. it could be that real world kanto has more cities while jhoto mught be more rural. and the real hoenn area is a mix of small islands and sea water.
i haven't heard of tohoku, so i don't know what that is.
