What was your first trainer's name?

In a galaxy far away?
it feels like it. i have several fairly strong memories of playing red when i was younger. at my aunt's house, in the living, kitchen and my room at my house. laying down under the christmas tree with my gba with the christmas lights shinning down on the screen. playing gold and experiencing a proper and not scary day-night cycle like in friday the 13th. playing crystal and meeting my favorite protag, crystal. i love pigtails, and hers defied gravity too, so she got extra awesome points.

First time ever playing Pokemon Red was naming my self with my real name and rival I can´t remmeber Gary or Green I think.

Second Gen I started to use my IRL nick name which was 3rr0r. Now days I mostly use one of my 3 Gamertags. SwordBreaker (Name of the spaceship in Lost Universe) , ZeroWalker (Zero from mega man but added Walker Becuse Zero is always taken) or Roxilius (Charter from an anime).

Lols, when I was younger, playing Pokèmon yellow for the first time, I also used the same names, was full pokèmaniac mode back then, like, 5-6 years old iirc, sigh, good times.
Nowadays, I would use the usual nick I go with, Bo, unless I feel more like going with one of my few OCs as the main character.

I used Asho for myself and Gario for the rival (Yes very creative). In my head canon he was the older brother of Ash and I wanted to play as someone who was strong and would catch all the strong pokemons. At that time in the anime Ash was letting go all of his strong pokemons and I was really pissed of by it so I "made" that character when I was playing Green. I still use that name when playing Pokemon out of nostalgia lol.

(Please don't judge me and my shitty imagination. I was just a kid 😅)

Always Red Ranger names, I didn't remember what I put in gen 1 though.
Gen 2, Jason
Gen 3, Tommy
Gen 4, Jack
Gen 5, Carter
Gen 6, Scott
Gen 7, Eric (practically 6th, but still Red)
Gen 8, Connor
Gen 9, Tyler
Haha, that's pretty original.

I used my actual name for Gen 1 and 5 (Black and White ... not 2) when I was younger
When I decided to replay Gen 1-3, 5 last year I stuck with their canon player character names

> I'm still like 'wtf' at the name choice for Ethan for HGSS ... I mean ... Ethan? Should've stayed Gold but eh :/

Only time I did change the rival's though was for Gen 1. Guy rival will always be Green ! ( Even though in terms of canon his starter is Blastoise ... )

Oh and ... phew ... good call ... I relied on a magazine scan's name for the player characters for Sun/Moon ... I like how Pokemon Masters virtually made Elios and Selene their canon names ( I still remember how a person I knew didn't like the name Selene though because of X/Y had Serena and felt it was too similar ... but hah Selene :P )

Always my own name if it’s the first playthrough.
If it’s a repeat playthrough and I choose the girl it’s always Yuna because 1) that was the name of the save in the Pokémon Pearl a friend gave me, and 2) she’s my favorite Final Fantasy character

Naming silent protagonists their ”canon” names bug me when they’re supposed to be a representation of you in the game, but it’s no big deal really, I just don’t do it myself (unless it’s Link).

The rival is always either my brother or one of my two Pokémon-crazy friends

Usually I just name them after myself the rival is usually a fictional character or one of my friends but with the older games I have to shorten my name to Vero cause Veronica is too long.

On Gen 1 I named my trainer Gary and his rival Ash.
Based.

for some reason, someone at game freak decided that player characters had to be realistic. that's why they have boring names and nowadays, boring designs. when i first saw lyra, i was convinced by her design alone that she was someone's fan fiction daughter character of mario.
when i learned that she replaced crystal for the remakes of gold and silver, i was extremely pissed off.

They’ve had normal names since gen 2, but I agree with the designs mostly. It’s like they compensate for all the ultra whacky side character/gym leaders by making the avatar really bland.
At least you can customize them a bit nowadays, even though you only have those awful uniforms in the latest game. And even then it’s kind of a roller coaster with how much you can actually customize them every other generation since 6 onwards lol

My favorite male avatar is from BW, and my favorite female avatar is from XY.

it wouldn't be so bad if the custom options let you get crazy with their appearances, letting you have the option of just going with the default look or full on anime, but you mainly just get 2 colors and a hat.
the side characters and gym leaders being wacky in appearance makes it feel like either your character doesn't belong or they don't. they seem to understand character design but give up with the most important one: your character. you see your character the most. after a while, you'll get bored and not really pay attention or notice your character on the screen.
granted, that happens with most games, but pokemon is a game that you can spend hundreds of hours playing. you do need to shake things up every once in a while.

Yeah I agree in general.

I think SwSh was pretty good in letting you be creative, there tons of clothing and you could even make your hair and eyes crazy colors, my friend’s character looked like their eyes were burning.

My character was a punk girl with big frizzy hair but I’ve sold the game so I can’t take a screenshot unfortunately.

The customization in SV was dogshit in comparison, just like how it was worse in SM compared to XY.

i guess whoever is in charge of the player customization stuff must either not e paid enough and/or doesn't get enough time to make everything that they wanted too. it would explain the inconsistences between games.

My theory is just that they simply prioritize different elements in different games, especially cosmetic ones. Masuda said in an interview (I can't find it right now, sorry) several years ago, that they might remove and add features all the time depending on the pipeline for the project, even if it's a mainline game. Game Freak only has around 200 employees which isn't a gigantic number, and they seem to be pretty stubborn when it comes to not changing their workflow too much.

The lack of outfits in SV makes sense given the school setting, even if it's a really boring decision. But then again SV is a really half-baked game overall, they were likely in over their heads.

yeah, the games were coming out about once every three years. not a whole lot of time to work on ideas. hopefully they will take a break and give themselves some more time to make higher quality games in the future.
