In a galaxy far away?i have no idea what name i picked the first time i played pokemon. that was soooo long ago.
it feels like it. i have several fairly strong memories of playing red when i was younger. at my aunt's house, in the living, kitchen and my room at my house. laying down under the christmas tree with my gba with the christmas lights shinning down on the screen. playing gold and experiencing a proper and not scary day-night cycle like in friday the 13th. playing crystal and meeting my favorite protag, crystal. i love pigtails, and hers defied gravity too, so she got extra awesome points. In a galaxy far away?
How about Hal Ketchum???Ash is cool name, just not attached to Ketchum, in my book, haha. I'll give them a 7/10 for effort because of the pun, though.
Haha, that's pretty original.Always Red Ranger names, I didn't remember what I put in gen 1 though.
Gen 2, Jason
Gen 3, Tommy
Gen 4, Jack
Gen 5, Carter
Gen 6, Scott
Gen 7, Eric (practically 6th, but still Red)
Gen 8, Connor
Gen 9, Tyler
for some reason, someone at game freak decided that player characters had to be realistic. that's why they have boring names and nowadays, boring designs. when i first saw lyra, i was convinced by her design alone that she was someone's fan fiction daughter character of mario.> I'm still like 'wtf' at the name choice for Ethan for HGSS ... I mean ... Ethan? Should've stayed Gold but eh :/
They’ve had normal names since gen 2, but I agree with the designs mostly. It’s like they compensate for all the ultra whacky side character/gym leaders by making the avatar really bland.for some reason, someone at game freak decided that player characters had to be realistic. that's why they have boring names and nowadays, boring designs. when i first saw lyra, i was convinced by her design alone that she was someone's fan fiction daughter character of mario.
when i learned that she replaced crystal for the remakes of gold and silver, i was extremely pissed off.
it wouldn't be so bad if the custom options let you get crazy with their appearances, letting you have the option of just going with the default look or full on anime, but you mainly just get 2 colors and a hat. They’ve had normal names since gen 2, but I agree with the designs mostly. At least you can customize them a bit nowadays, even though you only have those awful uniforms in the latest game. And even then it’s kind of a roller coaster with how much you can actually customize them every other generation since 6 onwards lol
My favorite male avatar is from BW, and my favorite female avatar is from XY.
Yeah I agree in general.it wouldn't be so bad if the custom options let you get crazy with their appearances, letting you have the option of just going with the default look or full on anime, but you mainly just get 2 colors and a hat.
the side characters and gym leaders being wacky in appearance makes it feel like either your character doesn't belong or they don't. they seem to understand character design but give up with the most important one: your character. you see your character the most. after a while, you'll get bored and not really pay attention or notice your character on the screen.
granted, that happens with most games, but pokemon is a game that you can spend hundreds of hours playing. you do need to shake things up every once in a while.
i guess whoever is in charge of the player customization stuff must either not e paid enough and/or doesn't get enough time to make everything that they wanted too. it would explain the inconsistences between games.Yeah I agree in general.
I think SwSh was pretty good in letting you be creative, there tons of clothing and you could even make your hair and eyes crazy colors, my friend’s character looked like their eyes were burning.
My character was a punk girl with big frizzy hair but I’ve sold the game so I can’t take a screenshot unfortunately.
The customization in SV was dogshit in comparison, just like how it was worse in SM compared to XY.

My theory is just that they simply prioritize different elements in different games, especially cosmetic ones. Masuda said in an interview (I can't find it right now, sorry) several years ago, that they might remove and add features all the time depending on the pipeline for the project, even if it's a mainline game. Game Freak only has around 200 employees which isn't a gigantic number, and they seem to be pretty stubborn when it comes to not changing their workflow too much.i guess whoever is in charge of the player customization stuff must either not e paid enough and/or doesn't get enough time to make everything that they wanted too. it would explain the inconsistences between games.
yeah, the games were coming out about once every three years. not a whole lot of time to work on ideas. hopefully they will take a break and give themselves some more time to make higher quality games in the future. My theory is just that they simply prioritize different elements in different games, especially cosmetic ones. The lack of outfits in SV makes sense given the school setting, even if it's a really boring decision. But then again SV is a really half-baked game overall, they were likely in over their heads.
