Back in the “olden days” so to speak, nearly video games were a dinar at most (3 usd), a price so low there was no justifiable reason for rental gaming to exist.
Things changed when the ps3 hit the market and their games were way harder to pirate, leading to most second hand stores here selling them at full price, which popularized a commodity in which stores and even amusement parks would have a gaming room not too unlike an Internet cafe where you’re allowed to try games for a limited time/price. Those rooms existed as early as ps1, but it became necessary to find ways to try expensive games before buying them. Especially when not a lot of us had internet access where we could just look up reviews and footage and judge for ourselves. Internet was both expensive and sluggish in the pre-2010s.
I used this method to try inFamous before buying it cuz I saw a commercial for it on tv and it made me wanna get a ps3 alongside uncharted, warriors Orochi 3 and gta 4 :), and whatever the most recent wrestling game was at the time.
