What retro game are you currently playing?

Breath of Fire.

Does Wii count as retro nowadays?
Because I was just trying out the ”Deluxe” mod for Animal Crossing: City Folk.

Seems like the perfect way to play that game so I’m excited to get into it more!

I've been (slowly) working through Pokémon Emerald! It's the first turn-based Pokémon game that I've really given a shot, and that's been fun!

It's a little recent to be 'retro', but I also circled back to Atelier Rorona, and I'm really loving that one. The slice-of-life Ateliers just hit a bit better to me than the ones where they try to be 'an actual JRPG'. I don't need to unravel an ancient mystery, just let me be a small-town magical girl, dammit! 😂

I refuse to recognize the fifth generation as proper retro, particularly the PSX, but:

I've been playing Gran Turismo 2. I elected to start with a Mazda Familia GT-X '92 -- it's a moderate-spec 4WD with 180 HP stock, all for around 5700 credits. The remainder, while not enough for a new pair of sport tires, is enough for some engine upgrades to put it right up against 200 HP proper. It's a heavier car, though -- about 2700lbs. It is, in combination, both extremely stable and a little sluggish around corners. A very forgiving drive, and able to pull out faster than most opponents in the B-license 200 HP league races. However, not at all appropriate for rally. You'll get smoked.

And, surprisingly, I put some time into Shadow Tower. It's a rough game that doesn't really explain itself well, or present itself well, or control well. But, it does have this promise of perpetual self-improvement because enemies provide immediate stat upgrades rather than XP upgrades.

So, there's a slime out there that will make you attack harder the moment you squash it.

I'm trying to master the retroachievements of Ardy Lightfoot (SNES), that game is full of personality, it's a shame the jumps are quite janky.

Technically not a retro game, but I'm currently playing the NES homebrew of Alwa's Awakening!

BattleTech Megadrive with the Operation Revival ROM hack. Pretty interesting game, albeit a bit slow. Very hard. Using the dual start option configuring the controls of P1 and P2 on the same controller makes it feel way more modern

I never really clocked Battletech 3050 as a game that actually followed the Battletech canon. It always seemed to me like a Strike game with big stompy robot. That the only mech available to pilot was the Timberwolf (which, as I read the manual, they used the Inner Sphere naming even though you're playing as a clanner) just indicated to me that they were using the Battletech license to capitalize on the look.

Which surprises me to find that someone out there actually took the effort to toss a hack on the game, and they knew enough to name their hack in way that is more lore-reverent than the game ever was.

Temptation. You offer me temptation.

Yeah, the hack is based on the lore. It actually buffs your weapons. The game is hard as shit, it filtered me. But the missions are very cool, you have multistage objectives to achieve, but damn it's hard

Rollergames (NES). My God is this game difficult with the platforming! It's not to the level of Battletoads, but is halfway there. Not helping matters, if you pick the lady in pink. She's fast, but to the detriment of the platforming. I managed to beat the whole game with her. At least the game gives you unlimited continues. Not the best brawler/platformer hybrid on the console, but still better has better brawler combat than Bayou Billy/Mad City. There's actual combos and grab moves, and you get a special move you can use up to three times that doesn't drain health. The final boss is piss easy; especially with a turbo controller/function. The music has that classic 8-bit Konami greatness.

Breath of Fire 2. Going through the whole series again since Capcom ain't releasing a collection for me.

I'm doing the same, still on the first game. For some reason I stopped following the series after beating the third game at the time.

i actually marathoned metal gear solid yesterday and it was an experience id say. the game gave me a lot of thoughts that i actually would want to document on here but ill double check if and how i can do that before committing.
