What kind of hobby you have that no one around you cares for?

Malifaux-Rules-Cover1.jpg

Malifaux.

In general, tabletop wargaming is fairly popular around my neck of the woods - but like most places I've known it's 40k or nothing. And between finding 40k (and most Games Workshop products) an absolute bore to play and spectate, and it generally attracting the sort of crowd that I don't want to associate with, I have found myself in the throes of playing most of the major alternatives that see some play.

And the best of the lot? Malifaux. (sorry Infinity-heads, your models suck)

Malifaux is great. The weird western theming is probably what initially sold me, but the relatively low cost barrier of entry (you can start playing for around $50 - rulebook and materials are free, it's just minis - a single core box is enough for skirmish scale battles), lovingly sculpted models, and highly active gameplay simply stole my heart. One problem: nobody plays it.

Which is too bad! We've got creole goblins, awkward automatons, undead cowboys, and more!

Mahjong looks fun, it's a hobby that I've been meaning to get into. Now in my case I think for most of my hobbies I have at least one friend who is also into them, except fishing. I've taken some friends fishing and they all enjoyed it, but I'm the only MILF guy I know.

I'll admit you got me there.

Pro Wrestling.

Seriously. Totally no one around me comments on this in any way. I don't even hear the typical texts like ‘Hahaha, you mean you watch these fake fights?'
(Perhaps because a large part of those people watch freak fights shows that are quite popular in Poland. Which results are certainly partly rigged, because situations like this, where a youtuber or rapper with no martial arts experience wins a fight against a former professional MMA fighter, are not very likely. )

Of course, gaming doesn't count, we are all gamers here. In my case, it is Riichi Mahjong, the Japanese variant of the classic Chinese board game. I'm not going to go on a long tirade here about Riichi, but it is the mostly widely represented variant in video games.

I first came into contact with it through a Anime/Manga called Akagi, it's quite interesting and actually teaches the game fundamentals unlike a lot of Riichi anime that involve fantastical powers and unrealistic levels of luck. If anyone is interested, I could PM with more details on the game.

Mahjong seems interesting not gonna lie. As for me cooking, both since i love it and my family usually asks me for it if they haven´t bought any pre-made food. I quite remember the first time i cooked, i almost burn myself two times at least (no joke, it was quite nervous to be honest) just then i learned and basically i enjoyed it, from that time i cooked till now

Cooking is such a generous hobby, that's nice.

I have noticed a trend where I have seen something I Love or something that interests me become hard to find if not just completely gone/removed (lots of recent game delistings).
I don't know if I'd consider myself a hoarder, but for the past year or so I have been hard at work procuring what I love and what I would dearly miss.
Movies I couldn't live without and games I couldn't stand to never inhabit again,
Most I can as legally as possible of course.

I don't know what The Brave Little Toaster or Vectorman mean to the ppl around me, but I want to keep alive the things that make up my story and keep my inner child happy.
Snapping up on Games before they get yanked.
In most recent memory, The Sega Genesis Collection, Forza 4 (thank goodness it went on sale before), the PS2 era GTA Trilogy.
Getting the older favs like Blood Omen 2 working.
I feel like I spend more time checking my old games, getting them modded and working and moving on to the next than actually playing my games, lol.
So I've found myself here. I don't like signing up for things, and I've never really posted places or Talked with the internet before. This seems like a space that cares about preservation not just of Old Video games, but of a sense of play.

I hope you manage to keep the games you love and your dear memories close to your heart.

Makes me think of Bluey where they are playing "Grannies" on the bus with Mum and Dad, and they completely destroy the "bus"

"Jaaaaanice, this isn't mahhh jonnng"

(starting to realize: if you watch enough bluey, at some point EVERYTHING reminds you of an episode of bluey, haha)

"The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates"

The Real problem boils down to Money, The company's are so Damn Greedy with the Product, and make it So inaccessible and Hard to Play on new Tech. without Charging a Arm and a Leg for it. Most people have to Resort to Piracy to get the Game/Show/Movie they want.
Why dose Nintendo need 5-8 Bucks for Mario 1? a buck sure.
i can see 3-5 for a Snes game.

Oh we shut Down the Shop you Invested over 500+ Dollars on. you want the Game's again? better fork out another 500 bucks. That is in of itself Pure Greed.

Sorry you can't Transfer your old Games to you're New 600$ System, a Line of Code make's it so it won't work, and we aren't going to Update that. Better get that Credit Card ready.

Again, Like Gabe or not, he is Right.

None of my close friends are particularly into music at all which could probably qualify as a hobby of mine (everything from making and listening to learning about).

My family are all musicians of different kinds though, so at least I get an outlet through them. :)

I also like reading and collecting various European comics, mainly franco-belgian ones but anything goes.

That is the whole truth. I'd love to add something witty or profound but there's no need.

I really enjoy visiting pawn shops, garage sales and assorted "old stuff stores", and I spend literally hours to go thorugh ALL the stuff trying find something interesting (to me, at least). It's better than therapy, and I usually end up finding some great stuff.
Last week for example, everyone looked at me with that "WTF" expression when they saw my "brand new" Dinosaurs! Magazine editions that I bought for $3 a piece. I'm feeling like an 8yo again, now I just need to find some blue/red 3D glasses.

Omg, yes I've found absolute GEMS thrifting around. Full copies of Dungeon Siege+expac, Knights of the Old Republic, and my all time Beloved Boxed copy of Blood Omen on PC with the map and everything!

That's interesting! sometimes it's possible to unearth some real treasures in such sales. I always consider that you are touching a fragment of someone's life with your own hands. It's very meaningful.

It used to be worse when your games were tied to a specific console...

i remember i had a gold link between worlds 3DS, and then i got a black friday black target new 3ds.

i migrated my games to it to try it out... but there was no warning that i couldnt migrate them back when i realized that the black friday black new 3DS was complete trash hardware compared to the LBW gold XL.

they could have at least warned me there was no going back... and i had a HUGE collection... to make matters worse, the BFB DS got stolen so all my games were just gone forever, then :(

I Do the same thing, through the week, when im on Lunch. couple weeks ago, got 2 Laptops <no chargers> and a mini pc <no power-brick> for 15 bucks. they didn't know if they worked. so was a As-is. and they do, i have multi adapters collected over the years, and a universal Adapter. and the Mini pc. is a older version of the mini pc i have. so it would fit.

One Lappy was Bios locked <waiting for my EEPROM Programmer to come in>
but quiet a steal tho

Hoo boy, where do I start?

Collecting figures, since 2003 or so.
Collecting CDs too.

Personalizing stuff, for some reason I don't like having the same thing other people has, so I often customizing them at least on visual level to make it distinct, like controllers and fightsticks, or PC peripherals. I went too far sometimes, like installing an FTP to run OPL on pi3 instead of PC to play PS2 (lower power draw, and you can carry it around), or rigging a NES to a car head unit.

Lastly, I have interest in knowing the 'behind the scenes' so to say, of media that I consume, for example anytime I finished a game I would watch the credits roll patiently, I want to know the people behind it, who's the director/artist/composer etc.

The same with shows and anime too, I feel like I'm the only voice actor nerd around, also related to my previous point, my PC notification sounds and voice assistant was changed to that of my favorite actor, so instead of the usual "you got mail" sound, it now says "メールが届いていますので、確認してみませんか?". Before you ask, it's not AI, it's an actual product being sold to public, many Windows OS on Japanese market even have it pre-installed.

i make music. i do a lot of genre hopping and mixing, but i always have some base of hiphop/rnb. the reason i put no one really cares about it is really because of the genre melding and the subject matter. I treat my music like therapy and while my instrumentals sound beautiful and happy, the lyrical content is very despondent and forlorn. I like the juxtaposition lmao.

Black and white movies, like German Nosferatu, The thief of Baghdad, Modern times and most from Chaplin, etc.
I try to reverse the always connected, gotta go fast mentality of modern societies by taking my time and doing more traditional jobs, like carpentry(ones that i can do with my own hands).
