What is the best Linux install?

Depends what your needs are, your level of proficiency and how much upkeep you want to do on the operating system versus how much you value stability. I don't know if there is truly a "best" Linux to be honest because so many distros serve different niches.

It sounds like you are starting out on your Linux journey from how you worded the post, so I'd probably recommend something like Linux Mint, Pop!_OS or Fedora. They are a nice combination of stable, well-supported and versatile operating systems that should fulfill all your requirements for starting out.

Pretty much what root said above. I have used Pop Os and Mint before and Mint was the most stable for me when I used it. Using Fedora currently and enjoying the customization options with KDE Plasma 6. You should experiment around with the different distros in virtual machines and see which one you'll like more then install that one onto your computer.

Well, you know, work some editing video stuff. watch films. And playing some video games in some emulation games

Whatever's looking the coolest. I like how ubuntu looks and use it. It's easy too.

Please don't scare away the curious.
Boo

Depends on what type of user are you.

Don't wanna configure stuff? Ubuntu or Mint. Want granular control over everything? Arch. Want a solid base but still have some say over what software you use in your OS? Debian. Want your whole OS to be built around some config files that can reproduce your entire system in any computer? NixOS.

So on and so forth, depends a lot on use cases, usually when we start out with Linux we tend to 'distro-hop' a lot and see what X or Y distribution have to offer, until you end up settling for something that works for you -- in my case, Arch.

Well, to be fair, @JustCallMeConstantin just said "best" not easiest to use ::winkfelix . Arch linux in the hands of an experienced user might be the most stable experience for general use, although I have never used it myself >_> I use Garuda because I want something arch based, easy to use and don't want to use the cl unless I want to.

@JustCallMeConstantin if this is really your first linux foray, I would recommend manjaro: I think it is the easiest for a beginner to use. Mint is also a fine choice, but I'm not the biggest fan of debian/ubuntu based distros.

I would get a cheap set of usb's and write live versions of mint, manjaro and whatever else you find interesting to try out (take note, that anything is going to work better after a native install).

There is also a general linux thread everyone, come join the fun ^_^

Just go with standard Ubuntu first. It just works. Don't try to be a tryhard from the get go just because someone told you to. Only go to more advanced distros when you feel the need to or if you are really curious.
