What games do you still consider some of the best despite having personal misgivings?

I feel the same about Cuphead. I appreciate its style, polish and the effort that clearly went into making that game but the gameplay just does not click with me on a purely personal level. I still sometimes boot it up and mess around for a while though.

saints row (2006). it's laggy, janky, glitchy and the graphics look horrendous at some points but man it is way better than any gta clone i've ever played

Really not much of a personal misgiving on my part, but I love Killer Is Dead. Critics were really mixed on it and tried to blame Suda51/Grasshopper for the Gigglo mini games, but they had nothing to do with that and didn't even want them in the game. That was Kawada publishing who forced them to put the mini game in there. They're not bad nor offensive, but I don't care much for them either. I only did them once to get the upgrades, and that was it. Otherwise, it's a great hack and slash action title, and still has the best combat out of all the grasshopper games. At least until maybe Romeo Is A Dead Man. The game has a pretty cool cel-shaded look too.

Oneechanbara Z2: Chaos. The game is pretty much a seventh generation game on PS4, that could have gotten a PS3 or 360 version since it does reuse more than a few assets, and is a mission pack sequel when you stop and think about it. These issues can be ignored when you realize it has the best combat in the series, has cool character switching moments you can pull off at nearly any time, and has an awesome dub. Especially Amanda Miller as Kagura. The soundtrack is awesome too, even though it reuses some songs from Z ~ Kagura. It's been over a decade since this game came out back in 2014, and the combat still holds up great. Jank included.

COD Infinite Warfare has the best single player even though it's lacking in a memorable villain or organization. The main hero cast carries this game along with its awesome gameplay.

One of my guilty pleasures is a Playstation 1 title called Robo Pit. It was fairly bland gameplay along with some rather annoying music, but I loved the customization options as well as your Robo's WIN/LOSS record kept. It was a head of its time IMO. Still holds up pretty well.

Dragon’s Dogma is a horribly balanced and blatantly unfinished game (the finished product is like 40% of the intended vision) with tons of implemented but barebones mechanics, but I still consider it one of my all-time favorites.
It’s like the posterchild for a ”more than the sum of its parts” kinda game.

And while I enjoyed 2 for what it was, one can’t help but feel that it fell into more or less the exact same pitfalls as the first game.

I don't really care how unbalanced and cheap it can be; Marvel VS Capcom 2 is extremely fun. Same thing with Dead or Alive 4.
That's most people's opinion in general on MvC2. DOA4 I don't remember being that unbalanced, but I wouldn't care either way. It was the first fighting game I bought on 360.

StarFox Assault. Sure, Fox controls on land haven't aged gracefully at all, but that game still remains fun. Always wished to get silver medals just to unlock Xevious, but never managed.

Do you wanna hear me talking about Monster Hunter for the 67th times? Cuz you about to get it.

To this day, Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite is still my favorite in the franchise.

But you have no idea how frustrating it is to play this shit until you try hunting Basarios/Gravios as Blademaster, facing off the almighty dimensional weaver Plesioth, constantly having to micro Hot/Cool Drink and Paintball, inventory is way too limited when running as Gunner, and so many more dated mechanic.

It's not even "misgiving" at this point, but personal fucking vendetta. This is the only game where I actually rage quit, pull my brain stem and bring it to the nearest four-way intersection, and Enraged so hard to a point I turn into Deviljho (read: starving). After finally clear Fatalis on my own and reaching HR8/G2, my mental health and sanity carted into the next hunt.

BONUS RANT ALERT: Palico Bomber is a crimes against humanity.

Rise for when I want to ride Rathian, MHFU for when I want Rathian to ride me.

Oddly enough, the graphics look so much worse in Saints Row 2. Everything looks washed out and hazy.

Mine would be Mass Effect. Despite having objectively the worst gameplay in the franchise, it's the best game in the franchise, IMO. The largest version of the Citadel, the most interesting overarching story, the most expansive game in the franchise despite some complaints about planets being empty (I preferred this over the mining mini-game), and the Mako controls could be wonky but I loved using it.

Persona 5 That game would be perfect if its combat wasn't turn based.

One of mine is Cuphead. The game is gorgeous and the gameplay seems pretty polished, but, man, that difficulty!

What about you?
Agree, I'm not fan of difficult games and Cuphead would be perfect if it has a balanced difficult.

The Witness. It's in my top 5 ever but it's hard to suggest to people because they either play it for a few minutes and dismiss it as a dumb maze game, or they think post-covid Jonathan Blow is the same guy who worked on this from 2008-2015 and will dismiss it out of hand.

DmC: Devil May Cry, the 2013 game. Fundamentally it works, and honestly its a pretty good game... but it lied to me. I searched up Devil May Cry because I'd heard good things, and that was the first one that came up. And while it is, in all technicality, a DMC game, it is absolutely not a mainline game.

So basically my introduction to the series was through a spinoff, one the community largely dislikes. Meant I started off with an incorrect interpretation of the characters and story.

Understandable.Though why didn't you look at the other ones when looking at the Google or whichever search engine you used? Especially because the hd collection of the first three games were already out and DMC4 was and definitely is still a thing. I am assuming you looked this up back in 2013.

BTW, do you have a PS4, PS5, XONE, or Series X? I recommend getting the Definitive Edition. It fixes nearly every gameplay issue I had with the vanilla release.

Yep, looked it up in 2013 and it just so happened to coincide with the game's release. That meant it was the only thing that came up, and the trailer looked great, so since I'd always heard good things about the series, I jumped in. Just bad luck that the one I picked is the one the community decided should be buried lol.

I'll have to look into that Definitive Edition.

Believe it or not, I had serious misgivings about the original Bioshock. The main enemy shown during the lead up to release was the big, slow "Big Daddy". I thought, how could that slow enemy ever seem like a real danger. I thought it would be lame and I'm not even sure what got me to give it a try, but it turned out to be one of my favorite games ever. I wonder how many other games I'm missing out on because I dismissed them before playing.

I'll probably get blasted for this but...

Killing Floor 3. I got this free from PSN+ last month. I had misgivings about this game from hearing a lot of bad feedback...performance issues, FPS drops, being forced to play unappealing specialists/characters...I was actually one of the people who with many others, asked Tripwire in their forums to not have specialists and force us to pick characters we didn't like just to use a certain class. It was certainly a disaster during the Beta test and launch.

Since PSN+ gave it to me for free and being a KF1 and 2 veteran, I might as well try it on our PS5. Fortunately, the Re-arnament update already dropped which decoupled specialists from classes so my chief complaint was already addressed and I was free to pick any character I chose. As for gameplay,....hmnh...it did have some innovation inspite of what people say. Husks can now shoot you from a billion miles in the air, Sirens shoot sonic booms now, Bloats can also blast you with acid balls. Scrakes and Fleshpounds have new moves but that part seems like a disappointment since they didn't feel as dangerous as KF1 and 2 were.

My nephew hated the reloading animation and the guns comparing them to boxes. And he called it out for having similarities with free-to-play mobile crap. I'm not as picky though and I never play games on my phone unless it's emulation so I can't tell what part simulated mobile trash. Honestly, I liked how you can now insert a customized combination of mods that can completely change the way your gun works.

It's also funny how it has similarities with two other co-op games I play regularly, it had a central hub just like Deep Rock Galactic between missions but it's practically a tomb when compared against the latter that has a bar, arcade games and playing hoops between missions. It has a crafting system similar to monster hunter where you take monster parts and scrap obtained from missions and use it to create your mods just like crafting decos and customizing skills in Monster Hunter. I found myself looking for advice on skills and mods just like what I do with MonHun. It almost felt like Tripwire read my mind and put my other games in their own.

KF2 still has superior content but KF3 isn't bad. It's certainly a different flavor of KF with it's own unique quirks. I won't call it the best for now but at least they got me interested.. Plus since I play on PS5, I don't have any of the more annoying performance problems Steam players have on Steam yet.

I was pretty bummed when I went to the Citadel in the sequel and saw 2D characters in the distance since the Citadel was made smaller and you couldn't actually get there. While Mass Effect 2 is still an incredible game, and an infinitely more polished experience, they dumbed things down quite a bit.

Blow's new game looks pretty ambitious. At a quick glance, it looks like a simplistic isometric puzzle game, but it's much larger and more complex beneath the surface.

You're not wrong. I just wish we heard more from the rest of the team than just him, it's not like he sat down and did this solo. I can't find the link atm, but I did see an article a little bit back that was like, "yeah we worked with him on this, but don't lump us in with him as a person." So who knows what this decade of development looked like.
