What Games didnt Live up to the hype for you?

Ocarina. I never really understood the whole "this game is the epitome of the sense of wonder, I would get lost for hours in the fantastic world" thing that some people say. To me it felt like the world had a lot of empty spots for the sake of being big, and the menu is maybe my least favorite in a game ever, both of which constantly reminded me that it is just a thing I'm playing, or trying to. That said, I do like the music a lot, and the graphics are okay considering it's an N64. But 40/40 in famitsu and all that? Not on board with that.
Seconded, i love the game, but in my book is just...good, Wind Waker let's you get lost far better in the sea with actual crap going on, while the flaws are glaring (Empty islands, the goddamn Triforce search, kinda short dungeons) Wind waker feels like the peak before BOTW

Ocarina of time on the other hand feels linear and relatively easy, it's still good, just not "The best game ever" in my book, honestly i prefer the Oracle Duology and ALTTP

I have a few of them:

- Dishonored series and other Arkane Studios game - Deathloop
- Nier: Automata
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- New Super Mario Bros. U
- Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth and Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth
- Monster Hunter: World
- Kingdom Hearts
- Pilotwings
- Katamari series
- Star Wars: Dark Forces
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Dragon Age II
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

I don't understand what I'm supposed to be liking about Earthbound, or about any other entries in the MOTHER series. (I've played them all to some extent.) The gameplay is boring, the visuals are trite, the music, while occasionally good, isn't really anything beyond other mid-tier SNES games, and with every passing year my tolerance for that "whimsical" style of Japanese writing (used by people like Itoi, Anno, and that guy who made Revolutionary Princess Utena or whatever that show is called) halves exponentially. Without using the words "atmosphere", "childhood" or "nostalgia", what am I missing, here!?

I guess I prefer my games to have a cynical bite and an edge to them, even when they're silly cartoon games about being kids. But I prefer them even more to be fun!
i might have a game suggestion for you then, give "Final Fantasy Origin: Stranger of Paradise" a shot, preferably with a friend for co-op, it might be something you'll like tonally, imagine Final Fantasy but all the main characters hate jrpgs.

I don't think I've ever been more hyped for a game than I was with MGSV. I followed like every piece of news for that game for years. I remember seeing all the fan theories and the plot leaks that happened and went "yeah no that's really dumb. There's no way any of that stuff is true" and sure enough a lot of the really stupid things I saw ended up actually being in the game. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed.

I was also really hyped for Final Fantasy XV and had been following it since it was Versus XIII. I enjoyed it for the most part but I really wish we would've got Versus XIII instead.

15 is in my top 5 ff games, but I still sympathize with the versus 13 truthers

Nier: Automata I have it but eeh even the firt game just pure meh.
Path of exile just eeh not for me
Last of us 1 and 2 just boring and the second game is just pure trash that made me go redound and I rarely refund. But yeah bored me to death.

bad old last of sus at it again

Don't cancel me, but.......
Final Fantasy VII....... The OG release ?
It's not bad, I enjoyed the game, but it's so overhyped. I finished it once, and that's it. I probably spent more time in FFX playing the Blitzball mini game than I did playing FFVII main game (I kid you not, it's basically my favorite sports game)

I do love the remakes, tho, waaaaaay more than the OG ??
Don't worry, I won't bake you for it!

I'm of the opposite mind, though, I prefer the original over the remake. I actually strongly dislike what was done to Final Fantasy after 12.

Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Don't starve together, all those crappy survival games with realistic graphics in the modern front.
Old School Stuff that are just not my thing or wasn't really into: Final Fantasy 7, Starfox, Final Fantasy Tactics and the Ratchet and Clank series as a whole

at it again ? Is it some competition to dislike it ? I got no clue what others think for me the game series was just boring and honestly Uncharted 1-4 is more fun to me when it comes to games for naughty dogs.

Maybe it´s becuse im dead sick of zombi esk games or in this case Mushroom infected people but honestly the story put me to sleep and gameplay as decent but not good enugh to make me wanna keep playing even with the old boring story.

Honestly I would have like it more if they made a game based on 28 days later.
sorry injoke between me and an irl friendgroup, none of us liked last of us 1 and we all have our own survival horror series of choice that we like. we all think it is a bad survival/action horror game

Loop8 it looked very good on the trailer ,the aesthetics and all, but it did not live up to the hype

I agree with most of this list. I have played through many of those games only to get bored with them rather quickly, or frustrated at some mechanic that took the fun out of the game.
- Dishonored - Not sure why, but I just wasn't feeling it. Quit after 2 hours.
- Nier: Automata - gets boring quickly and takes way too long to get anything done.
- New Super Mario Bros. U - Those games are fun at first, but annoying to play with other people.
- Monster Hunter: World - Let me pause the game, I have kids. 45 minutes to kill one enemy?!
- Star Wars: Dark Forces - I wanted to like this game, but kept getting lost.
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - Couldn't even get past the first planet, died constantly.
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask - The N64 controls like a shopping cart with a bad wheel
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - See Majora's Mask
- Any Souls game - Being killed constantly is not fun. Armored Core at least make it feel engaging. Also, let me pause the game!

It's been years since I hyped a game. Last game I was particularly stoked about was Cyberpunk 2077. I wasn't let down, but since my PC could barely handle it and everyone was just angry and vocal against it I didn't talk much about it. Monster Hunter Rise didn't quite caught me but I still enjoyed it a lot, the wirebugs were neat but since it didn't have the things I loved about World it just felt like a step back.

Halo Infinite, Starfield were probably the biggest let downs I've experienced this generation. Even if Starfield has some remarkable cool things about it just feel disjointed, barebones. Halo Infinite doesn't quite feel like a Halo game and the weapons/balancing they introduced wasn't to my liking. Resident Evil Village was great but not as good as I had hoped.

huuuuu, this had hype behind it? Didn't it die months before it came out when the trailer with all the "online micro macro transactions" stuff was shown?
Guess you could say that it was my own personal hype. I loved the Batman games and got hyped up when the team announced this game, thinking it would be similar, boy was I wrong. I didn't think it was trash or anything, but didn't live up to what I thought it would be.

got memed into playing 1000xresist the hype around it feels like a shilling campaign almost

Ive literally never heard of that game ever

Payday 3 my beloved series is cooked
didnt the dev actually go back and make dlc for the second one that retconed the 3rd game or was that a different series

I don't know if it's a hot take, but Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Like I have seen a lot of people praising Dream Team, but I will admit, when I first played it, I thought it was... okay. Like I forgot how far into the game I got, but I remember not really having the motivation to finish it.

It just felt... kinda boring, if I'm being honest. Now it's been a while, but I do remember that it did feel like at times they were trying to do Bowser's Inside Story again without remembering what made Bowser's Inside Story good or interesting.
