What Games didnt Live up to the hype for you?

All the Deus Ex games after the first. They just can't do it again.
Let's add Cyberpunk 20whatever to the pile too.

Ocarina. I never really understood the whole "this game is the epitome of the sense of wonder, I would get lost for hours in the fantastic world" thing that some people say. To me it felt like the world had a lot of empty spots for the sake of being big, and the menu is maybe my least favorite in a game ever, both of which constantly reminded me that it is just a thing I'm playing, or trying to. That said, I do like the music a lot, and the graphics are okay considering it's an N64. But 40/40 in famitsu and all that? Not on board with that.

mario party if i want to play board ga,es i play board games if i want to play minigames i play warioware.

I've bought "Zelda Tears of Kingdom" after the advertising hype (I decided to buy game 15 days before release, I had no interest in it before); I've seen the leaked gameplay, thought it was cool... and in the first hours it was, but then I found it boring for my taste; finished it just because I spent 50+ euros on it and re-sold it.

I feel like that's a lot of modern games these days to be quite honest, not just saying that to be grumpy or pointlessly rude either. Not just being negative.

My own personal pick is remakes in general, they aren't bad. Don't get me wrong! Just over hyped, as another poster said they cut content and heavily revise it. That's a really big no from me, I don't like it when something is streamlined and watered down for a wider audience. Obviously I understand they want a broad audience because that's what brings in revenue but Crowbcats video of RE4, I think is an honest summary. It's what happens with most remasters, they change lighting, textures, sound affects, voice lines, character models, even voice actors and then act surprised when it's tonally so different from the original or loses it's edge, and fans will obviously point it out. It was all meant to convey something and they just bastardized it in more ways than one.

The second is God of War, I tried the newest ones over my friends house. Matthewmatosis' video is the perfect summary of that, just awful, awful. It's a movie pretending to be a game, a walking simulator and while I know GoW was originally 'cinematic' for it's time this was a very different game. And to no surprise one of the main devs behind it is a raging narcissist that regularly embarrasses himself.

And the third one has to be the DeS remake. King Allant sounds like he's in a cubicle toilet next to mine talking to me during that boss fight, then there's the art direction, world tendency removal, or one of their artists having a spat with the internet because he tried to turn Flamelurker in to Diablo. That's all I have to say about the game with out getting upset.

Kingdom Hearts 3.
I mean it's alright... but it felt like a downgrade from Kingdom Hearts 2, in gameplay, music, and even story. You'd think a new mainline entry would've been awesome, but if anything, it was kind of average.

It felt... rushed. Which is weird, since the game had been in development for such a long time.

Hades, I did some runs but got bored quickly. Characters and story didn't interest me that much, also don't like the portrayals of gods. I would much rather read Odysseia and experience a good Greek mythology adventure that way.

  • Golden Sun: Awful scenario design and the fact that I was playing DQ5 at the same time made the issues even more glaring. So many unnecessary dialogues and drawn out sequences. I still haven't played GS2 after the sour taste it left.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn: The very definition of 7/10 game to me. I don't have any consoles so was very excited when it came to PC after seeing PS people hyping it up for years. But after playing it I was like that's it? This is what people considers console-seller??
  • God of War (2018): Huge downgrade to gameplay in favour of going cinematic. For a franchise whose highlight was solid gameplay this alone is a big letdown. When the game suddenly ended I was like that's it? Never understood why people got emotional playing it.
  • TLoU Part 2: Absolutely awful story and narrative structure. Considering TLoU1 has one of the best stories in gaming it I still don't understand how can they fumble it this bad. It also baffles my mind that it is the most awarded game in history.
  • Deathloop: Another stereotypical 7/10 game. Advertised as Rogue-like immersive sim but ended up being neither. It was just a linear mediocre shooter with an okayish story. This and TLoU getting 10/10 across the board from all the gaming publications made me realise that review scores can't be trusted.

Kingdom hearts 3 and Final Fantasy X

Kingdom hearts 3: "Let's do nothing that made Kingdom Hearts 2 good." A 10+ year wait and we got nothing good for it.

Final Fantasy X: Annoying main character, racism, and the story that goes off the wheels just before the calm lands

I fully agree! It was a hell to learn because of how the game introduced it. Thankfully, grinding is in my bone due to how gaming was introduced to me (my father was an extreme completionist). "If I haven't earned my rewards from these mini games, I ain't leaving!" That's my mindset.

Thanks to that, past the initial suffering, I got to enjoy so much time building the ultimate team and playing with them. I even stopped using Jecht Shot, or only use it in "anime-worthy" moments to make it harder or more epic lol. I wished someone can make a standalone Blitzball game with proper introduction and tutorials, but it never happened
yeah, it would be cool to have a stand alone game of just blitzball. the best case of that being made nowadays is as an anniversary game. which might be neat as they could put more characters in there from the entire series. but i doubt that they would do that.

Final fantasy crystal chronicles.
I love the original, it's addictive, it keeps you playing, but...

the first time hitting a goblin in river belle path was, after years being hyped and waiting to play it...
"THIS IS NOT DYNAMIC!".
shocked and understanding why the selkies are popular (...)
getting all of the artifacts, is addictive. and tedious.
one at a time, and without knowing which score you have (even the remake,
is not helping with the feature, because you still can only choose one artifact per dungeon).

next one, ring of fates.
it could be perfect... more dynamic battles.
no, you can not store all the equipment of the game (and I'm curious if square-enix,
fixed that issue in the "gemini edition").

and so on, with echoes of time.
yes, this is interesting and a strange one, yes, you can deposit all the stuff in the game...
not even in the hardest difficulty mode (10),
you can't level up your weapon, cosplay armor or accessory, quickly to level 30.
there is no upgrade that will allow you to go faster in that area either.
and the controls, not comfortable, this change to me.

pretty much, that's all.

i never got far in FFCC, i played for a few hours. i bee lined straight for the selkie character. created a red headed goth one. i'm working on a few drawings of the selkie race to add to my gallery on devianart. never had a chance to play the other games in the series, but i'm working my way there.

The first two Mega Mans (I still need to play the others). When I played them, I thought it was a game that threw you into unnecessary and often unfair difficulty.

In one of them, there was even a part where I couldn't continue because I didn't have a certain item.

It would be the series of Tekken for me. I don't really get it, or maybe I just feel it's way too complex than other fighting games. I also don't really find any of the Mario games are quite enjoyable for some reason.

Horizon Zero Dawn, it's really mid and I can't really vibe with any aspect of it, another is Persona 2 duology, im in middle of Eternal Punishment, it's cool, but can't really compete with P3P/the Answer/P4G

I don't understand what I'm supposed to be liking about Earthbound, or about any other entries in the MOTHER series. (I've played them all to some extent.) The gameplay is boring, the visuals are trite, the music, while occasionally good, isn't really anything beyond other mid-tier SNES games, and with every passing year my tolerance for that "whimsical" style of Japanese writing (used by people like Itoi, Anno, and that guy who made Revolutionary Princess Utena or whatever that show is called) halves exponentially. Without using the words "atmosphere", "childhood" or "nostalgia", what am I missing, here!?

I guess I prefer my games to have a cynical bite and an edge to them, even when they're silly cartoon games about being kids. But I prefer them even more to be fun!

Super Mario Odyssey. I really tried to like it.
I just think I don't like 3d platformers. I enjoyed Super Mario Bros Wonder.

Horizon Zero Dawn...? I give it Horizon Zero Damn ?? I forgot it existed lol. It's just so mid on so many levels for me, I actually had to Google the title to remind me which game it is

When the trailer for LEGO Horizon dropped it baffled me. I don't like LEGO, and even I was thinking "Don't they have much better stuff to make video games about?"

Bro what? I'm not kidding, this is the first time I've heard about it lmao ?

Googled it just now and found out it's a 2024 game. Bruh, what's wrong with people in 2024? Almost every AAA games released in 2024 flopped...

MGSV, the potential it had
Elden Ring, not as memorable as DS3 nor Bloodborne
Cyberpunk 2077, the potential it had
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, UE5... oh boy. That is the most frustrating one, because it's not GSC fault
