So you hear about a game that everyone is telling you is really good, maybe even the best game ever and/or that you'll really love it. And then you go to play it and its a 6 or 7 out of 10 for you. You don't get why everyone is gushing over it, maybe its got great parts the the bad parts hold it back from being a masterpiece?

what game(s) fits that description for everyone here?

I'm sad you didn't like Quest 64. I think for the time it was a great game an one of the first I remember needing a memory card to save progress. I can still remember the ads for that game, "walk softly and carry a big magic stick"

Resident Evil 3 Remake. Man I was so hyped for it. 3 is my favorite out of the old style games and Jill is my favorite character. Stuff like the Clock Tower being missing and Nemesis being relegated to scripted sequences really ruined it. One thing I was super hyped for was them making Carlos playable. I thought that would be a cool thing, but instead of adding stuff that would make sense for him they just set him inside the damn police station, completely ruining the original idea of how the story plays out. Not to mention I got the S+ rank on my second playthrough because it only took me an hour and a half. Me and my buddy were hanging out and he really wanted to see the game, so I meant to just show him a bit of the game but ended up just speedrunning the whole thing and we just laughed and I deleted the game after that.

This is going back a bit, but I bought No Man's Sky on launch day. Played the hell out of it for weeks and was just left feeling meh. I gave it to my nephew, and years later it seems it's been patched and updated in to a whole new game. But I'm too far gone to care. It was a let down.

That's how I feel about it too. I never played it but I remember watching a lot of my friends at the time play it and it just looked so awful. Now that it's all updated and fancy everyone is praising the hell out of it but I just don't think I'd be able to get into it after how it was.

Funnily enough, I think the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games are the best mario games. They feel so much more alive with the writing and such. At least up until Super Paper Mario and Bowser's Inside Story, they suck after that.

Don't cancel me, but.......
Final Fantasy VII....... The OG release 😅
It's not bad, I enjoyed the game, but it's so overhyped. I finished it once, and that's it. I probably spent more time in FFX playing the Blitzball mini game than I did playing FFVII main game (I kid you not, it's basically my favorite sports game)

I do love the remakes, tho, waaaaaay more than the OG 🙏🙏

The J shot, that's all you need.

Paper Mario is my 2nd favorite game of all time! First is Wizardry, because dungeon crawling. Second Paper Mario because, idk, it's just fun lol.

I have a few:
- NMS (now it is fixed, but even fixed it bored me after a few hours)
- FFVII, both old and new. I don't like any of the characters. I can't stand them. And I don't get how people can like the story, the only thing FF more edgelord is Stranger of CHAOS-DUDE.
- Forza Horizon 5. What a shameful downgrade from 4, which already was a downgrade from 3.
- RE3: Remake. Just, straight-up insulting to the og RE3.
- RE2: Remake too, for different reasons, it's really good, but there is something off with it.
- Persona 3 Reloaded. They completely got rid of the content from FES to sell it as DLC after, and also completely ignored the FemMC path of P3P from the PSP (it became my favorite version). Still a good remake, but damn that pissed me off.
- Elden Ring (Sekiro was better, BITE ME)

- Persona 4. Can't explain, just never clicked like P3 did. Could be the slow start plus the writing rubbing me the wrong way.
- Halo: Reach. Its multiplayer was probably the tits back in the day but when I got around to playing it a couple years back the SP campaign struck me as a mediocre COD clone.
- FFVII, both old and new. I don't like any of the characters. I can't stand them. And I don't get how people can like the story, the only thing FF more edgelord is Stranger of CHAOS-DUDE.
The new ones are indefensible in the story department, but I really enjoyed OG FF7. Honestly, I didn't see anything ridiculously edgy in it. Maybe it's a translation thing, OG FF7 is known to have a terrible official translation so I went out of my way to use the old retranslation patch when I played it.
- RE2: Remake too, for different reasons, it's really good, but there is something off with it.
After RE1 added so much, RE2Make and on have by comparison been reductive when it comes to updating the source material. A bad move imo
- Elden Ring (Sekiro was better, BITE ME)
Armored Core 6.5 died for endless Eldem Rangz cashgrabs... awful, just awful.

The beta testing of SMT V (the original version). I still liked the game but Vengeance is much better game in every single way. And another one would DBZ battle of Z the cash grab game with content of the battle of gods that today is almost unplayable thanks to the braindead IA and how the game is designed around a dead online multiplayer.

FFX is also my favorite sports game. the Zanarkand Abes are number 1!

I still do have that on my backlog (the retranslation), I have read that it changes a lot for the better. Maybe it would push it from a 5 to a 7-8 for me.

There's a difference between 'said to be a good game but not to my taste' (AKA #1) and 'said to be a good game but it sucks' (AKA #2).

The #1s for me would be Pokemon, Diablo/Ragnarok/DotA (and most single-unit point and click), Megami Tensei/Persona, Minecraft

The #2s for me would be Lufia 2 remake, Xenosaga, FFVII remake and any FF past FFX-2, Overwatch, Fortnite, Trials of Mana

Wth, nobody ever agreed with me on this!

It's usually like this:
"In FFX, we have [insert the awesome story and cool fights], and Blitzball!"

Most fans: whoa, cool fights! awesome story!

Me, weirdo: Ah, yes, Blitzball, best game ever 😂

Some fans: fck off, it's the worst minigame ever.

I like that you put the stop AFTER FFX-2, back then that game was so over-hated it pissed me off so much, I just love it, almost as much as FFX.

FFX is the only time i've ever had an interest in sports besides the mario games and rumble roses. i do quite like the story, the cut scenes are are good, good characters. i will say that blitzball does have quite the worst introduction to anything ever. i think letting the player use wakka's match during the story would have been a very good tutorial to a mini game that is quite fun and exciting when you have full control over making a team. that put me off of the mini game for a while until was reading guides on gamefaqs and the players guide.

once you get to play it at your convenience, you can spend a good hour looking up recruits and many hours leveling them up. the tension and excitement from scoring last second goals and multiple goals in a minute or two was awesome. i understood how sports fans feel when watching baseball or football.

Half Life 2, tried playing it while it went free on its Anniversary, but it didn't ringed me and couldn't reach past the part of the sewers, i get it's "The best PC game of 2000's" but due to my natural drowsiness it makes me literally sick, also coming from more beginner friendly games, being crushed even on Easy was a turn off to me, i still enjoyed the little i played (Threw the can at the guard XD)

I fully agree! It was a hell to learn because of how the game introduced it. Thankfully, grinding is in my bone due to how gaming was introduced to me (my father was an extreme completionist). "If I haven't earned my rewards from these mini games, I ain't leaving!" That's my mindset.

Thanks to that, past the initial suffering, I got to enjoy so much time building the ultimate team and playing with them. I even stopped using Jecht Shot, or only use it in "anime-worthy" moments to make it harder or more epic lol. I wished someone can make a standalone Blitzball game with proper introduction and tutorials, but it never happened
