The US version is harder and is the only game in the trilogy with limited coninues. The Japanese version has unlimited continues like all the other Ninja Gaiden games.I don't know the exact differences, as the only version I've known is the Japanese one, that's the one that was sold in Macedonia usually, but from what I understand it's much easier and better balanced.
The US version of Zelda 2 is better than the Famicom version apart from maybe the music. Same with the US version of Dragon Quest. The original one used password saves, the US one had SRAM saves. The nes release of Final Fantasy also fixed a few of the bugs in the Famicom version and is probably slightly better and it's definitely better than the Japan only MSX version. There's actually quite a few cases where Famicom games were improved when ported to the nes and localized.
