What Game has your favorite Atmosphere?

I recently played Majora's Mask for the first time and to be honest, gameplaywise, I didn't enjoy it all that much compared to other Zelda games, but man the atmosphere was insane. I see why there are so many fan theories about link being dead. In fact, I agree to the sentiment a lot after playing it myself. Its like a bad trip similar to Alice in Wonderland
Kinda awesome of you to enjoy the atmosphere even for not liking the game much.

I think it bears saying that most people nowadays are expecting to be impressed at the very first instant of their experience, and any slight difficulty or attempt to force effort out of these players will deter them, causing them to give up and quit immediately.

How we as gamers separate the Strong from the Weebs.

Agreed. I like to think that most people on this site are a little more forgiving to games, bearing with them (to a degree), simply because we're retro enthusiasts. We understand these games are old and its the same reason why we love some of them

Honestly? Xenoblade Chronicles X. It really hammers the feeling that you're exploring an unknown planet well imo.

I will be completely honest and say I spent hours just exploring Mira instead of doing story stuff.

I'm excited for DE to drop.
Really, the whole Xenoblade series does this well. Xenoblade 1 created two whole worlds that feel completely alive even though one technically isn't. Even the dumpster fire of character writing that is Xenoblade 2 had a pretty awesome and well developed world. Just the Indoline Praetorium alone is so well developed as a
beautiful yet dangerous religious dictatorship
that even the music gets across both what you should feel about it immediately and what you are meant to know later.

But Xenoblade X probably does the best at creating a whole world. There's so much lore built up all over the place in all sorts of little things that it feels more lived in than most other games.

Hmmm, darn, all the ones I'd say have already been mentioned. Nothing wrong with doubling up, but I'm sure I can find something not in the topic yet...

Okay, this is a little weird, but hear me out! I can't really describe the feeling this gives me. Somewhere between cozy and hyped I suppose. It always set the stage for what was (usually) a good time and even nowadays when I use DuckStation, it always plays and that will never change. It just puts me in a specific mood like nothing else does. I would say that's in the same wheelhouse as great atmosphere.

Homeworld_-_Cataclysm_Coverart.png
It didn't actually take long at all for this to come to mind. Homeworld: Cataclysm (Emergence) is such a wonderful game. It's probably considered sacrilege for liking it over the first game, but whatevs. I might have liked the first more if I hadn't played Cataclysm before it, but you can't lose with either game. Anyway, the best way to describe the vibe the game gives off is space horror. You play as a mining ship called the Kuun-Lan that unknowingly releases a biomechanical virus called the Beast on the galaxy while studying an ancient distress beacon. The game does a fantastic job at giving the feeling of desperation as you travel around the galaxy, attempting to stop the Beast and often time just survive against overwhelming odds.

The excellent soundtrack by Paul Ruskay only helps enhance the game's atmosphere. It's a very ambient, downtempo soundtrack and it fits perfectly for the mood set by the game. You can buy it on GoG under the name Homeworld: Emergence because Blizzard copyrighted Cataclysm for it's WoW expansion. Fuck that. Homeworld: Cataclysm is the older game, shit like that shouldn't be allowed to happen. In conclusion, I recommend giving it a shot. I'm not a big fan of RTS games, but the Homeworld games got their claws into me. It's even more neat because it's a true 3D game as well, allowing you to command ships to attack from above, below, anywhere really. Good stuff.
Sadly, yes, that's as good as the music quality is going to get. I have a direct game rip of the soundtrack and it sounds no better. Too bad the source code to the game was lost, otherwise it would have gotten the Homeworld Remastered Collection treatment. :<

one that i recently discovered and have since absolutely fallen in love with is Mario Artist: Polygon Studio on the 64dd. there's a mode called the "Experimental World," where you can make a vehicle and drive it around in this huge open world, and it's awesome. a lot of people describe n64 games as feeling dreamlike, but this is the first game i've ever truly felt that with. there are these giant worm creatures that fly around and make creepy noises, and if you touch them they eat a piece of your vehicle, which sounds EXACTLY like some kinda nightmare i'd have. there's also no music, which absolutely adds to that atmosphere. it doesn't even look like a real game, like the n64 shouldn't be able to run something like this, and yet it's very much real

Oof, many examples I have, let's go one by one.

First time I got dread playing a game: Metroid Prime series. My cousin has the steel book trilogy for the Wii, and young me who lived in the Wii era was curious about the game with a cool man (I didn't know then) wearing an armor and a arm cannon, I freshly watched the first Iron Man movie and I was into the whole sci-fi asthetic, I wanted to try the game so I took it home, I got farely far into the game, not without getting spoked playing trough the Frigate Orpheon (space). I stoped playing once the Chozo Warrior Ghosts became regular enemies, you have no ideia what the feeling was for a 10 year old to try and leave a room, the door is locked, he turns around and sees 3 specters in a dim lit room, safe to say I only recently finished the game due to the remaster lol.

Second experience: SMT 4. I don't think I have ever played a game with such an opressive atmosphere like this, Even in your first dungeon, you are thrown in a underground dungeon to fight your way trough a trial to prove you are worthy of the Samurai's Gauntlet, and not even once you see the sky in the whole game, and it only gets worse when you go to Tokyo, it's eternaly dark and there are very few humans walking the streets, the demons have made the streets their home, and you are the only motherfucker that can go toe to toe with them... Perfect.

oh man, smt4 is a great pick. im only about halfway through it (i think?) but i 100% get what you mean, it feels like everything's out to get you in the best way possible.

reminds me, SMT if... has a really good atmosphere, it feels like youre floating through a dream the whole game. things just sorta happen, the segment with Orcus at the end of the Domain of Gluttony comes to mind. the Domain of Wrath doesn't even look like its a real place, it's just this swirling, ephemeral, deep red maze with an oppressive air lingering throughout the whole thing. there's this one teacher that progressively becomes more and more robotic each time you meet him, and it feels like none of what's going on is really happening. i once heard someone compare it to Yume Nikki, which is a pretty good comparison imo.

If you like Manhunt and its atmosphere, then you'd enjoy Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.
It has a similar "snuff film" aesthetic but takes more from the LiveLeak/BestGore side of things. The Shanghai streets are gross and oppressive, the fights are loud and hectic, the main characters are desperately screaming at each other, the autosave is a camera timestamp and the gore is pixelated out when you get a headshot. There's a shaky cam but it serves a thematic and artistic purpose, and you can just turn it off anyways.
The soundtrack makes use of schizo noise that would fit in a horror game, along with the ocassional Chinese pop for disonance.
The atmospheric elements bleeds through into the marketing material too.

I love SMT if... That game was so trippy. There's so many odd and funny elements mixed in with the dark esoteric dungeon crawling that it creates a unique vibe. I'd argue that SMT 1 and 2 both have this to a degree (especially 2 with King Frost and Aleister Crowley), but they have their own distinct atmospheres that are cool enough to deserve their own mention.

Really good choices all around.

I like the desaturated look that many fantasy games went for in the 2000s. The pale rolling fields of NieR and Shadow of the Colossus are very comforting. Level 1-1 of Demon's Souls scratches a similar itch.

I also like the vibrant tropical/Polynesian-inspired landscapes of many Y2K-era JRPGs. Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy X obviously, but also the beach levels of Phantasy Star Online.

Silent Hill series
Fallout 2 and New Vegas
Baroque
Resident Evil 4 (both OG and Remake, in their own ways)
Heavy Rain - I know it's a bit heavy-handed, but the atmosphere struck me really hard as a teen playing for the first time
