Mines easily the first Silent Hill. Every Silent Hill has an amazing atmosphere but something the first game is just so compelling to me. I love how the town looks with the old ps1 polygons and textures, there really is just nothing like it. one area that always stuck out to me was the house you enter at the beginning of the game with the locked backdoor. it just feels so normal and comforting to me for some reason lol.

pikmin 1 and 2. the atmosphere is a weird combo of calm serenity and dreadful isolation. alone on a strange planet in a strange environment. most of the creatures ae the size of your character and hinder your exploration and try to eat you. yet most are passive; they usually only retaliate when you get to close to their personal space.
you have no idea what the pikmin are thinking, or why they work with you. they might have their own language, they make sounds that sound happy or sad. they have some intelligence, they can move and pick up things. it's just a very weird and intriguing world to explore.

yeah i agree! i watched a friend play a little bit of the first game and i was suprised at just how urgent but also hopeful it felt considering olimars circumstances lol. i love olimars little logs at the end of the levels.

Sirens 1 and 2, but 1 in particular. Directed and written by Keiichiro Toyama, director and writer of Silent Hill 1. The second one has a pretty solid atmosphere too. It's rainy and isolated. Perfect for rainy seasons.
ive been wanting to play the first two games for a while! i always come back to nitro rads videos on the series and i love the uncanny facial expressions from the characters and the overall atmosphere of the rural japanese village, considering survival horror is recognized as a japanese dominated genre, we suprisingly dont get a lot of games set there lol.

Resident Evil 1 the remake and Resident Evil 0
the best pre rendered backgrounds like ever!

Deciding a game is a lot tougher than I thought it would be.... I would probably choose one of the old point and click games made by LucasArts. If I had to choose one of those, I would probably go with 'Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis' if we're talking atmosphere. Some of those old 90s games have a certain charm that just can't be matched in my opinion.

yeah, his logs vary quite a bit depending on what goes on during the day. sometimes he reminisces about his family, others are notes about the pikmin or the strange beasts that he encounters. that carries over to the second game where he makes notes about the monsters and treasures that he fids. he taught the pikmin how to dance at one point after finding a small compact mirror.

Since you mentioned a horror series in the opening post, I highly recommend Dementium 1 & 2 and Nanashi no Game 1 & 2 (both english patched). But you have to play them on real hardware (NDS consoles), armed with a stylus and with rotated console, if you want to enjoy them to the fullest. 😉

Chrono Cross.
Don't play Trigger first, if you haven't already. It doesn't matter.
You will laugh, you will cry; a lot. Like every 30 minutes. At least, I did.
Stop what you're doing and play it right now.
It changed my entire perspective on life. I'm not exaggerating.

I would say it's between the Tales of franchise and the Dothack franchise. What I love about the tales atmosphere is that you feel how giant world is, and how you are going to play a big adventure. And in the case of DotHack I love the MMO atmosphere and the 2000 computer interface.
