What are your favorite romhacks?

Super Mario Bros Tweaked is a breath of fresh air.
With the Music of the Restored Title Screen, that now you don't become small when you take damage but you lose the fire power-up and you are still normal, some bugs were fixed as well as the lives system and as well as some physics adapting more or less to the later games of the 2D Super Mario saga and it is like giving a second chance to the game.

Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers - An update/overhaul to SRB2Kart, which was a fork of Sonic Robo Blast 2, which was made in the Doom engine. The best racing game I have ever played. Steeper than average learning curve but it's so worth it once everything clicks. Also packed with a metric ton of Sega fanservice. I can't go back to Mario Kart anymore.

Sonic 3 Complete - Definitive way to play the game.

Sonic Before the Sequel and Sonic After the Sequel - A bit dated but worth running through to hear the soundtrack.

Pokemon Prism - My favorite Pokemon romhack. Crystal-based with a massive amount of stuff to do.

Pokemon Unova Red - Replaces the original 151 with Gen V's Pokedex, complete with demade sprites. Super charming.

Pokemon Clover - Offensive content warning. Legitimately good hack. Arguably 4chan's greatest contribution to humanity.

Mega Moemon FireRed - Nothing different gameplay-wise but the sprites are so cute!

Smash Remix - I used to think Smash 64 had aged horribly. Turns out all it needed was some more variety in characters and stages. This mod's awesome.

Smash Remix got a surprise update!

I generally prefer romhacks that restore censored or removed content like in Breath of Fire IV, and the ones that replace English dubs with the original Japanese voice acting in games like Valkyrie Profile: Leneth.

This is Incredible and Impressive at the same time.
I fear the day they'll hit that technical ceiling because of ROM size limit (which is why Sonic 3 Complete cannot have more stuff)...

The next step would be a PC decomp/recomp/native port to unleash the capabilities like Sonic 3 AIR.

Undubs are a blessing indeed.

As for removed/censored content I dunno, it's mostly aesthetic so YMMV. I prefer gameplay changes.

I've been having a blast with Mario Kart romhacks lately so I'll mention these:
Mario Kart Double Dash Plus
Mario Kart CTGP DS
Mario Kart Wii Retro Rewind

Hell, I learned that MK Wii has a HUGE modding scene, as if it was a PC game by now. People add in all sorts of stuff to it. I've seen the Suzuka and Tsukuba real race tracks, adn chibified cars from Initial D be modded in.

I need to check them out. Especially DD+ and Wii RR.

Does Zelda LTTP randomizer count? It's a website that used the Japanese version of LTTP to create randomized games, and the set up allows you many different options, like having harder enemies, randomized bosses, randomized layouts and items.

You could even set it up so you couldn't beat the game unless you knew glitches you could exploit. Or not.

i do not know where else to post this in this sub-forum
are there any neat donkey kong country 1-3 romhacks anyone would recommend?
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Unveiled.
Unless you'd rather something easier? 😅

i have looked up unveiled and it looks very fun
i will download it tomorrow
difficulty in 2d platformers is one of the reasons the super donkey boy trilogy are my favourite platformer games
Donkey Kong Country Kremling's Revenge, DKC Mania, and DKC3 Tag Team Trouble may prove too easy for you, then. 😅

how neat
strange i remember a few years ago looking for well made donkey romhacks, and i could not really find any
maybe i was not looking hard enough
the concept of kremlings revenge as a remixing of the original game's levels is very cool
say do you think these rom hacks would work on original hardware? it would be super swag if i could play them on my old television

usually, some hacks will list if they work on original hardware on the page where it was originally hosted. some hacks do work on the original console, some are completely incompatible. i have one hack that would instantly crash a gamecube if you attempted to play it on there. it requires far more power than the purple lunch box could ever produce.

thanks two the too of you for the information
i will play the hacked donkey games with a giddy and elated heart

Honestly I would chalk it up to a compatibility issue. Do not underestimate the power of the Gamecube.

i will let you know how it goes a little later. it seems like they are all compatible with original hardware

no, the readme file straight up said that it could never work on the original hardware. it loads too much stuff at once.
