What are your favorite romhacks?

i'd say pikmin 1 squared and bikmin 269 are a couple of my favorites to play.

Sonic Megamix and those Wario Land colorization mods. Idk if I can call them romhacks since they're more of a modded total conversion but Sindacco Chronicles and Forelli Redemption are really cool.

Hello! everyone
In this thread, you can share your favorite romhacks (and you can put a link so that others can download the romhacks, but you don't have to).

One of my favorite romhacks is "Shotgun Mario 64"! It's funny to demolish Mario 64 characters ?

I want to play metroid planets but the links are down.

The Illusion of Gaia randomizer(fun way to replay a childhood favorite) .
Pokemon Crystal clear(This thing looks like black magic to me).

The old classic... super kitiku world, a legendary romhack among romhack community, custom bosses and levels... it's all perfect! still other romhacks i love is the Megaman & Bass switching characters, game is more enjoyable like that and the disc are way more fun to obtain

i wish CrystalClear's devs weren't such jerks. it's unfair to build a project entirely on open source code, and refuse to share any of your own findings. CC has things like follow pokemon that people have wanted for a long time, but the hackers refuse to share any of their findings. this community thrives on sharing with each other. hoarding information is just wrong.
I've never really looked into it and can't speak on them but that explains a lot. I think CC is awesome, but that said for me personally I've wanted a definitive to me Gen 2 experience that adds a lot of that stuff but is the original game not open world. similar to a lot of the added feature and QoL updates of Gen 1 that have come out in the last few years, and could not for the life of me figure out why a version of crystal with a lot of CC features like following pokemon, the improved dex, character customization, etc existed in a version of the base game with all 251 obtainable and with Stadium 2 support. I was thinking a few months ago I would teach myself how to do it and make it if I could find any information on combining that shit. I'm a gen 1/2 guy and the perfect version of them for me to replay doesn't quite exist yet but there are multiple hacks that have parts of them and I just wish I could pick and choose and make the version for me. that said there are a lot of of them I adore individually. and don't get me wrong, I love Crystal Clear too, I just wish there was an alternative for when I'm more in the mood for the original game that had all the cool stuff they put into it I always wanted.
Sometimes having the most simple QoL things are some of the best hacks. Ones that get the feeling of playing the original.

The Metroid Plus saving rom hack is awesome. I do wish the unofficial update didn't have the mini-map on the main screen as it gets in the way of items and enemies sometimes.

Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link Redux patches are amazing. You can even mix and match what things you want added to them (I prefer original sprites).

The Castlevania II Translation Plus Map patch is great. Even adds a save feature.

Double EXP/ Gold on Dragon Warrior NES makes those games a lot less tedious.
my personal favorite hacks all tend to be stuff like this or hacks that uncensor while adding QoL that also don't change it altogether THAT much from the original english versions we got, things like the Ted Woosley Uncensored Edition, MaternalBound Redux, things like that. I'm also a big fan of some of the GB colorization hacks, the Mega Man ones are fantastic and the QoL updates are sick. I'm hoping someone adds a Map to Metroid II one of these days.

It's crazy how far romhacking has come since I discovered hacks years ago. it used to be just weird shit like Pokemon Cock version where it was just ridiculous vulgar dialogue or Mario, but hard as shit. and now there are full fledged sequels to classics out there or original games using an old engine that have level design rivaling official products.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the Dreamcast, with the music changed mod. I could never stand playing the game with default music. I've always hated it. People who say no big deal, or don't care, not me. Music is part of a games experience. Just like I disliked KOF 97 for not having much music there.

Call me a scrub, i can take it

Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 are more fair with RIP Enemies patches, that means...
NO MORE BIRDS...asumming you kill the first one in the first place

I love the X3 Zero Project hack on SNES. I still really like X3 but it's one I find myself not wanting to come back to as much as the other classics. The changes in this make it a little smoother and more novel for revisits.

There was this Goof Troop game (also on SNES) my brother and I grew up playing and we were always wanting more since we've beaten that damn game a thousand times. Recently found a rom hack with brand new levels and it was actually pretty dope. We were elated to have some new layouts and puzzles lol.

Another hack I love is a new set of levels for Donkey Kong Country called... ugh I think Kremlings Revenge? Anyway DKC is another game I've played way too much, so it was cool too get some new challenges. The hack wasn't perfect - due to the prerenders, background tiles would look choppy and strange when rearranged and there were some bullshit moments. BUT it wasn't trying to be sadistically kaizo difficult and was an earnest attempt and making some engaging new courses.

Honorable mentions to that N64 Smash Bros hack that adds all those characters and maps. Also the one Super Mario 64 hack that let's you play as Sonic lol. That's wild stuff.

Toby Fox's Earthbound Halloween Hack is a classic. I remember the Stay at Home Banjo-Kazooie romhack and Pokémon Unbound being quite fun too.

Speaking of Banjo-Kazooie, Jiggies of Time is probably my favourite but admittedly I haven't actually played a huge variety of romhacks so I probably need to branch out a bit more and might take some suggestions from this thread lol.

A few that come to mind are:

The Legend of Zelda: Ultimate Trial
Mega Moemon Firered
Manall's FF1
Shadow the Hedgehog: Reloaded
Smash Remix
LayLa: The Iris Mission

Ultimate Trial especially hooked me. The game was challenging, but not over the top.

Legend of Link is a really good Zelda 1 rom hack. It mixes in stuff from later Zelda games. It even has music from the 80s Zelda cartoon. Each dungeon has it's own theme too! It's a really creative hack! Legend of Super Mario Save The Mushroom Kingdom is another one but the dungeon theme could have been better. It's the same Zelda 1 dungeon theme mixed with music from Super Mario Bros. and it sounds off because of the timing of some of the notes. It's weird. If you can get past that, the overworld is AWESOME! The weapons are from Super Mario too!

My favorite ones would have to be:

  • Golden Sun Reloaded
  • Pokemon Team Rocket Edition: Dragonsden Version
  • Pokemon: Radical Red
  • Fire Emblem Sacred Echoes
  • Fire Emblem 6: Project Ember
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (Lawless)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War ReMixed
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (One Vision)
  • Mega Man X Project Zero (all of them)
  • Xenogears: Perfect Works Build
  • Legend of Legaia: Restored Progression
  • The Legend of Dragoon (UNDUB + Bugfix)

On the recommendation of a User on the site I played Super Mario Land 2 DX, and was grinning non-stop the whole time.

Really lovely choice of colours, the addition of Luigi was awesome, and yeah all in all I had a really good time with it.

Also, imho, Persona 3 FES: Direct Commands hack is the only way to play that game nowadays.

Super Mario Bros Tweaked is a breath of fresh air.

I really wish someone made a PC port for less crunching.

Super Mario Bros Tweaked is a breath of fresh air.
I shall check that one.
