Freedom unite complete for monster hunter freedom unite

It's currently the definitive way to play the game, no reason not to use it

Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the Dreamcast, with the music changed mod. I could never stand playing the game with default music. I've always hated it. People who say no big deal, or don't care, not me. Music is part of a games experience. Just like I disliked KOF 97 for not having much music there.

I mostly enjoy hacks that fix games that have either terribly misguided design decisions, unacknowledged critical bugs or glaring omissions.

Under that light, I'll cite a few.

First, the RNG fix for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. This fixes the botched RNG routine in the game allowing it to function like all the games before it and the ones after it, with the RNG seeds rerolled properly at each game load. Capcom at the time said they designed it this way, but I don't believe it, they copped out and didn't want to issue patches.

Second, Mega Man X3 - Zero Project v4.8. The most advanced iteration of a patch that does so much good for the game that it singlehandedly removes it from the quagmire of mediocrity it wallows in and elevates it to be closer to its kin by fixing gameplay issues (botched buster mechanics, awful, unusable up dash and that pathetic, distracting shield effect), not to mention the bonus of adding Zero properly and removing the randomness associated with certain events.

Third, Mega Man 7 Refit - A weak buster and pathetically short iframes really bring this otherwise solid game down quite a bit. This hack fixes that.

Call me a scrub, i can take it

Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 are more fair with RIP Enemies patches, that means...
NO MORE BIRDS...asumming you kill the first one in the first place

Fire emblem hacks are pretty much my go to when I'm feeling like playing strategy, I tend to stick to new story or characters not those hard type hacks as most of them require lots and lots of grinding/RNG manipulation and I don't care enough to waste hours on one game for that.

Tons and tons of mods for PC games I play I can't even name most of them but off the top of my head, fallout new vegas being my comfort game I go back to since I like fallout so much, it makes the game even more interesting with huge assorted mods added in.

Mega Man X's Air Dash/Wall Jump QoL is a great way to replay the game. It lets you start the game with dash from the get-go rather than being forced to play Chill Penguin's stage first.

I also second MasterEn's suggestion of Super Smash Bros. Brawl mods. I haven't played the game in a long time at this point, but Project M significantly improved the gameplay by removing the tripping mechanic and buffing character movesets considerably. Some characters, like Lucario, had their moveset completely reworked.

After Project M's discontinuation, Legacy XP took over the mantle as its successor and added even more characters like Geno, Shadow, and Waluigi to the roster.

New characters is pretty rad. I always thought it would be a much better use for clone characters' slots.

I love the X3 Zero Project hack on SNES. I still really like X3 but it's one I find myself not wanting to come back to as much as the other classics. The changes in this make it a little smoother and more novel for revisits.

There was this Goof Troop game (also on SNES) my brother and I grew up playing and we were always wanting more since we've beaten that damn game a thousand times. Recently found a rom hack with brand new levels and it was actually pretty dope. We were elated to have some new layouts and puzzles lol.

Another hack I love is a new set of levels for Donkey Kong Country called... ugh I think Kremlings Revenge? Anyway DKC is another game I've played way too much, so it was cool too get some new challenges. The hack wasn't perfect - due to the prerenders, background tiles would look choppy and strange when rearranged and there were some bullshit moments. BUT it wasn't trying to be sadistically kaizo difficult and was an earnest attempt and making some engaging new courses.

Honorable mentions to that N64 Smash Bros hack that adds all those characters and maps. Also the one Super Mario 64 hack that let's you play as Sonic lol. That's wild stuff.

Toby Fox's Earthbound Halloween Hack is a classic. I remember the Stay at Home Banjo-Kazooie romhack and Pokémon Unbound being quite fun too.

Speaking of Banjo-Kazooie, Jiggies of Time is probably my favourite but admittedly I haven't actually played a huge variety of romhacks so I probably need to branch out a bit more and might take some suggestions from this thread lol.

Haven't really delved much into rom hack but I ones I know are the various Fire Emblem and Castlevania ones as well as the Megaman X N's Editions. Plus Golden Sun Reloaded.

Legend of Link is a really good Zelda 1 rom hack. It mixes in stuff from later Zelda games. It even has music from the 80s Zelda cartoon. Each dungeon has it's own theme too! It's a really creative hack! Legend of Super Mario Save The Mushroom Kingdom is another one but the dungeon theme could have been better. It's the same Zelda 1 dungeon theme mixed with music from Super Mario Bros. and it sounds off because of the timing of some of the notes. It's weird. If you can get past that, the overworld is AWESOME! The weapons are from Super Mario too!

My favorite ones would have to be:

  • Golden Sun Reloaded
  • Pokemon Team Rocket Edition: Dragonsden Version
  • Pokemon: Radical Red
  • Fire Emblem Sacred Echoes
  • Fire Emblem 6: Project Ember
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (Lawless)
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War ReMixed
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (One Vision)
  • Mega Man X Project Zero (all of them)
  • Xenogears: Perfect Works Build
  • Legend of Legaia: Restored Progression
  • The Legend of Dragoon (UNDUB + Bugfix)

On the recommendation of a User on the site I played Super Mario Land 2 DX, and was grinning non-stop the whole time.

Really lovely choice of colours, the addition of Luigi was awesome, and yeah all in all I had a really good time with it.

Also, imho, Persona 3 FES: Direct Commands hack is the only way to play that game nowadays.

Super Mario Bros Tweaked is a breath of fresh air.

I really wish someone made a PC port for less crunching.

Super Mario Bros Tweaked is a breath of fresh air.
I shall check that one.

With the Music of the Restored Title Screen, that now you don't become small when you take damage but you lose the fire power-up and you are still normal, some bugs were fixed as well as the lives system and as well as some physics adapting more or less to the later games of the 2D Super Mario saga and it is like giving a second chance to the game.

Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers - An update/overhaul to SRB2Kart, which was a fork of Sonic Robo Blast 2, which was made in the Doom engine. The best racing game I have ever played. Steeper than average learning curve but it's so worth it once everything clicks. Also packed with a metric ton of Sega fanservice. I can't go back to Mario Kart anymore.

Sonic 3 Complete - Definitive way to play the game.

Sonic Before the Sequel and Sonic After the Sequel - A bit dated but worth running through to hear the soundtrack.

Pokemon Prism - My favorite Pokemon romhack. Crystal-based with a massive amount of stuff to do.

Pokemon Unova Red - Replaces the original 151 with Gen V's Pokedex, complete with demade sprites. Super charming.

Pokemon Clover - Offensive content warning. Legitimately good hack. Arguably 4chan's greatest contribution to humanity.

Mega Moemon FireRed - Nothing different gameplay-wise but the sprites are so cute!

Smash Remix - I used to think Smash 64 had aged horribly. Turns out all it needed was some more variety in characters and stages. This mod's awesome.

Smash Remix got a surprise update!
