Despite being an avid retro gamer, I actually don't watch very many retro gaming youtube channels, so hopefully I might get some good recommendations in this thread...

Personally, I usually just watch AVGN (ofc), PeanutButterGamer, and Gamesack.

How about you?

I just got back at Stop skeleton from fighting, he started up in the wake of AVGN as HVGN (happy video game nerd) and has evolved into his own thing over the years. Been at it for like 17 years? I just watched his video on the Symphony of the Night Game.com port that never released.

  • Gaming Historian - High quality retro game documentaries, though uploads are scarce.
  • GTV Japan - More high quality documentaries that are Japan-centric.
  • Karl Jobst - Mostly covers cheating scandals in speedrunning, an overwhelming majority of which are retro games.
  • Kosmic - Super Mario Bros. speedrunner that provides interesting, in-depth analyses of classic Mario speedruns, and an overall classic Mario science channel.
  • LGR - PC-centric retro gaming and hardware. Cozy vibes.
  • Summoning Salt - Speedrunning history documentaries, which are overwhelmingly retro.

Though, I am a big Ryan fan. I don't really watch much 'retro gamer' YouTubers. The only one that I'd really recommend is, Happy Console Gamer. Met the dude IRL, he was pretty cool. But who I do watch a lot of are YouTubers that modify/fix retro hardware. I'll give some of my favorites.

Tronicsfix - Older dude who buys faulty stuff on ebay and repairs it.
Joey Does Tech - Older dude who buys faulty stuff on ebay and repairs it.
Luke Morse - Older dude who buys JAPANESE ARCADE PCBs/items are repairs it.

Then there's that English dude who does all the GameBoy stuff, and a few others.

8-Bit Ryan...it probably or definitely won't count because he doesn't focus on Retro games
But I'll just add it because...8-Bit (or because he's my favorite to watch)

I haven't been watching anything lately. Sometimes I watch old Gamespot TV/Extended Play/X-Play episodes that users upload to Youtube.

Another channel I really like I haven't seen mentioned yet is Happy Console Gamer. Old school gamer with a passion for it. His channel has a mix of both retro and newer stuff too.

I really like some French youtubers like DGJX, DRINK WILD SODA, Colik Fantastik who always do excellent reviews especially for third and fourth generation platforms. In addition to in-depth video game knowledge they also possess a lot of humor, which in this day and age doesn't hurt....
Unfortunately, in my country, i.e. Italy, I have not yet found a quality channel.

Sega Lord X, Nitro Rad, Retro Bird, there's a lot of good ones.

metal jesus rock
I swear he's the reason retro games go up in price.

Yeah he used to play a lot of Capcom stuff specifically.

A lot of great YT channels were already mentioned in this thread, here are my few suggestions

Retro Bird - I like his style, very informative but also very funny
Nyarly and Marsh are creators that focus mainly on Shin Megami Tensei series and it's spinoffs
ThorHighHeels great content focused mainly on niche series
DoVe_7 - nice channel about racing games
The Electric Underground - one of the best channels about shmups, covers older and new games, there is also huge dose of analysis of video game design that comes from point of view of arcade games design philosophy

I also cannot recommend Ross Scott enough.

Not only are his takes on gaming a complete joy to listen to, but he's also a genuinely nice dude... he was the ONLY YouTuber to let me interview him after I approached him for my site's 15th year anniversary. I just love him.

My favourites are Civvie 11 and Accursed Farms.

Civvie will cover old shooters and new old styled ones.

Accursed Farms' Ross covers many types of games, usually those with a story. Not focused on retro games, but most of them are. Adventure games are often featured for instance like Still Life and Legend of Kyrandia.

I also follow some Quake centric channels, just in case people are interested. Custom Gamer [defunct], Quake Speedruns Explained, dumptruck_ds, etc. Having a level designer like Custom Gamer playing through Quake and Half-life 2 custom maps with commentary was very entertaining.

I only started watching him very recently but James Channel has some really cool videos. He talks about more general retro tech stuff as well. Definitely worth checking out.

When it comes to Retro-Gaming- well obviously AVGN was King. There's a great download out there somewhere of the first 100 episodes as originally published without the modern YouTube tampering and post-release editing by Screenwave. They're still fantastic pieces of nostalgic entertainment.

I really tend to enjoy long-form and educational, informative types of videos. Projects that are really thorough and well researched or that cover something in completion. Lemme look through my sub page in a sec: I've taken a few links from you fellow retronians so it's only good turn I leave some of my own. Naturally, some of these will not be retro exclusive but should be mostly retro:

8-Bit Music Theory - Pretty much what it sounds like, execpt it's not only 8-bit. Great channel that explains many of those things that you don't notice but your brain does.
AustinSV - If you're like me you have some weird obsession with playing 'the best version' of something. This guy does thorough, no nonsense port comparisons.
Majuular - Videos like "Let's play every 3DO RPG" and 3 hour retrospective on King's Field and Ultima.
U Can Beat Video Games - Video form of reading a Nintendo Power. The narrator's tonal inflection is annoying at first but eventually you get used to it. Cute Dog.
