Some of you are definitely on my wavelength in terms of what you like. I've enjoyed Hideo Yamamoto's manga; especially Homunculus and Ichi the Killer; I feel it's far superior to the film which focused on the exploitative elements and essentially became just a shock-piece. It was essentially about the cyclical nature of trauma and in a perverse way; a love story about the fated "joining" of the ultimate sadist with the ultimate masochist.
At least, that's what I thought it my twenties. Now in my forties, I do find it a bit too exploitative and controversial for controversy's-sake. It's still "an important" read.
However, "The World is Mine" is absolutely fantastic. Some of the most well-written, idiosyncratic characters ever written. Arai has the ability to give every character, no matter how minor, a soul. Absolutely fantastic Manga. Love it!
On the surface, it's about about one amoral killer and one immoral killer, but ultimately the fate of the world rests on the repercussions of their actions.
