Im quite fond of FF14, it's an mmo and basically like the only game I keep up with.

Armored Core VI is the best AAA game I've played in years, Dragon Quest Monsters 3 was pretty fun too, and there have been a few indies like Vividelope and Mouthwashing that I really enjoyed. But beyond that, everything else kinda blends together, I've always been more into retro gaming anyway, so it doesn't really bother me.

I've been trying out the beta for Synduality too, it's pretty janky but I like the concept, if you like mecha games you should check it out.

I can't play the big titles anymore, stuck for now with a Ryzen 3 3200U. I think the last "modern" game I played is Ys IX Monstrum Nox and that was with all graphics low, like demake level but I had a great time anyways. Today I just play old stuff.

Does The Witcher series still count as modern games? If so, then that would be my pick.

Very few, which are mostly 'sequels' to old series. Like Psychonauts 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. They have their problems ofc, but I still enjoyed then a lot.

Doesn't know if count as modern, but recently i started to play Shantae and the pirate's curse. It's my first Shantae game and i'm really liking the it so far.

UFO 50.
I hope I'm not annoying with how often I bring this one up, but man, I love this game.
50 amazing NES-style games of all sorts of genres in one highly polished package. Tons of content and secrets, tons of interesting design ideas. Love it.
By far my favourite game of the year. Hell, of the last several years.

Also the Souls series.
I know it's a cliché pick and I know the series' coverage in the media, its many lackluster imitators and its frankly infuriating fandom have really soured people on it, but man, the return of the King's Field sensibilities with much better combat was such a breath of fresh air when Demon's Souls was released.
Exploring that game completely blind alongside its (at the time) tiny community back in the day will always be one of my favourite gaming memories.

Elden Ring, Grime, Nobody Saves the World, MonHun, Stranger of Paradise, souls in general, Bloodborne and things like that. Ender Lilies can also be quite fun. New Zelda games are good still, but I prefer the old style.

The only thing approaching modern that I play is Monster Hunter, the rest are either indies like Shovel Knight and its apinoffs (I absolutely love Pocket Dungeon) or emulated classics. Also, classic MH also falls within tye purview of emulated classics so... yeah.

Is it weird that I miss the stiff controls/movement of the older MH titles? World was great and all (wasn't a fan of Rise personally), but there's a tactile feel to the older games that I can't help but miss.

Not at all, I much prefer the feel of older games. It was heavier, with more commitment. You didn't need fancy post processing t9 tell a big hit from a tap, you could feel that.

That said, I much prefer Rise to World for being a esthetically more 8n line with tye classics and allowing for moveset customization.

It's not weird but I've played these since Freedom Unite and I didn't miss the "older feeling". World was crunchy, fluid and had more dynamism overall. I felt like evolving the series that hard caused this contempt from older fans. I've had this discussion many many times with my best friend (who I played P3, 3U, 4U, Generations)

I don’t even like these, anymore… the new Sonic and Mario games haven’t grabbed me at all. I think, personally, I’m just not a fan of modern design sensibilities, regardless of what IP is attached to it.
I feel this. Even the ones that do try to be more oldschool in design still feel more streamlined, and not in a good way. Odyssey just felt too easy to the point getting moons didn't feel rewarding.

Sounds like you just need a few good recommendations to see what else is out there. Nothing wrong with retro games, but I believe that there's still good titles being released.

Some I can recommend is Ys X: Nordics, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, CrossCode, Fallen Aces, and Axiom Verge to name a few.

Of course, interesting new games come out every year.

If modern is, say, the last five years?

Roguelite's exploded in popularity, and the best of them, like Balatro, Hades I and II, Into the Breach, and Slay the Spire, are some of the crown jewels of the genre and gaming to date.

Platformers, everyone's favorite genre of yesteryear, is still getting hits like the fantastic Astro Boy, and the last two Mario games, Odyssey and Wonder? Some of the best the series has ever seen, without a doubt.

Racing games got a real arcade style boost in the arm with Forza Horizon 5, while Gran Turismo is still doing what it does best on the PS5.

Fighting game fans have *literally* never had it better, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, King of Fighters XV, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs. Capcom Collection, all with good online play? Plus the upcoming City of the Wolves? I'm gonna have to replace my arcade stick soon, damn.

RPG's? Man, Baldur's Gate 3 blew the church doors wide open last year, Like a Dragon has pivoted to become the next evolution of Dragon Quest, and Disco Elysium is easily the most compelling writing in the medium so far.

I'm regretting centering this on genres now, I forgot how much I find them annoying to describe video games. Gonna mix it up a little now.

The last two Monster Hunters have been a joy, like the rest of the series you'll struggle and wonder what the big deal is, but somewhere during your first major hunt something clicks or snaps in place, and now you're hooked.

The Sony franchises are overly much focused on open world, but they're all quality. Horizon: Forbidden West is jaw-dropping, with thrilling combat (with robot fucking dinosaurs). Ghosts of Tsushima is similar, with a gorgeous setting and swordplay thats constantly entertaining. (Like many open world games though, it's a fair bit too long, could have dropped the entire third act and been a perfect game)

The Last of Us 2 managed to be the platonic sequel and improve in just about every way on the first game, particularly in the second half when the grim revenge story twists into one of the best adventures I've ever played. Special mention to being the first game to ever trigger my vertigo, holy shit.

Armored Core 6! Fromsoft finally took a break from making games I *don't* enjoy to deliver the best damn mech action game, if you grew up loving giant robot action, AC:6 is here to make you feel cool as fuck.

Capcom keeps making good remakes, can someone get Square Enix to go sit in and figure out what they're doing wrong? Resident Evil 2 Remake is maybe my favorite game in the series now, I speedrun the B playthroughs every couple months.

Oh, and my beloved beat-em-ups are back and better than ever! Streets of Rage 4 was a love letter to the genre, and I'd insist anyone who grew up in an arcade give it a shot.

No doubt I'm leaving out a ton, and it'll all come rushing to me the moment I hit post. I'll try to resist just listing more till the end of the week though.

Edit: I forgot to mention Dave the Diver!...and Dredge...and Unicorn Overlord, and Frostpunk, Loop Hero, Wargroove, and the fact that we get Super Robot Wars in English now, damn.

Oh, also Pentiment, what a gem. There's also something to be said for just wandering around in Cyberpunk 2077, I don't love the game but I can't deny it's beautiful.
