Were you allowed to play M rated games growing up?

I played a lot of Call of Duty when I was young, had Bulletstorm and some other 18+ games. My parents didn't really mind if it was like an actiony kinda game, like we watch similar growing up in movies. We did kinda avoid horror games, back then I couldn't handle horror films let alone games. I tried to play Dead Space on my brothers PS3 and was shaking before I even saw an enemy.

It really depended on what the "M" was attached to. Fighting games weren't a problem, but not shooters. I don't like shooters anyway, so it wasn't a big deal, really.

Well Yes and no.
I got rygar and tekken 4 prince of persia warriors within.(ps2) at first that where later taken away from me but given back to me as a adult,

yet I was allowed to play Gta San Andreas and Doom (Ps1)

oh and Skyrim but I was not 16 at that time but I just could not wait playing it since I was a huge fan of Oblivion.

yes but probably just because they were too busy watching tv , i also remember from the age of 8yo - watching every violent movie you can think of , my uncle who lived with us for a long time used to hire videos out every friday night - and most contained utraviolence and nudity - i noticed he would fast forward nudity that went on too long but oddly never skipped the violence - its probably a good thing that he didn't know about the "other" vids i watched that were stashed behind his wardrobe - most strangely unmarked or with foreign titles and very used looking.

There was a spectrum. GTA5 and RDR2? Sure, go ahead. Mortal Kombat 11? Hell the fuck no, and shame on our bio dad for thinking it was an okay game to buy for a twelve year old. Now granted, I know that Rockstar's games and MK are often M-rated for similar yet very different reasons and intensities therein, but still.

Absolutely! My parents didn’t care cuz we knew right from wrong so there was nothing to worry about. We grew up on horror movies too so M games weren’t anything out of the ordinary.

I wasn't allowed to play specifically 3D GTA games for a while, I could only play them at other people's homes without supervision
When I was younger I wasn't allowed to look at FPS games, until one day I staged a strike by standing in the middle of the corridor until mom would let me go inside the room and watch my brother and my cousin play Medal of Honor

I grew up playing some m-rated and even r-rated games.
I remember playing Duke Nukem 3D on the Saturn and Resident Evil on PSX when I was 7-8 years old, and in the same period I played Turok on PC.

did you get to try the fear effect games? I always preferred Parasite Eve

i was aware of both fear effect games and read the reviews of them but never did play them - due to no reason in particular - just playing other stuff at the time. heard of parasite eve too but it wasn't a well known game to me compared to silent hill and resi

I remember that Chinatown Wars was my first GTA because it didn't look as graphical as the 3D entries on the PSP (yet there's mention of drugs and other things).
