VPN & Digital ID

Linux users, like myself, can simply run this script
"curl -fsSL https://agelesslinux.org/become-ageless.sh | sudo bash"
that will deploy a stub age verification API that returns no user data.

So, they can go get, if you will pardon my language. "Royally Fucked" with the ID stuff

Exactly, it is pointless because it isn't just about verifying who you are or the bullshit lie of "keeping kids safe" it is about tracking your every online move so using a VPN would be pointless.
Exactly I don't think kids should be using the Internet a lot of problems with the modern internet stem from us having to share with children. The problem is that these laws have nothing to do with kids they're just an excuse for censorship.

It's very awkward when you come into a thread to express your opinions and more or less everyone says the same.

Dear Craig, while I understand what you're saying, the inflammatory remark at the end was perhaps somewhat un-necessary. It may muddy good faith responses, you know? But that's not a big deal for me, just passing it along.

More than likely my sister and I would've both been dead before we got started in life without the internet. The internet gave my sister access to people that actually helped us get out of the situation we were in, which was kind of a grave one, thanks to less than stellar parents. Our parents didn't really go south until later, so at least up until that point they knew basically everyone my sis knew on the internet - they were actually involved in our lives, so, you know, doing what parents should and not leaving it to the government.

Even on the flipside, the horror stories I've heard of people falling in with bad crowds, or being talked into doing something disgusting, all the while my brain is "your parents were WHERE, during all of this, exactly?"

But this has, as everyone else says, never been about the children. The "children", that unknown, formless entity, is just another cheap excuse to deny people access to a variety of services without slapping a little chip on them.

I'd still like to see some people who might be supportive of this weighing in.

If governments cared about children then they would take their own hands off them for a start. Digital ID is not for the better of any of us, ever.

for the time being you can stil get around digital ID with a vpn by changing to a location that doesnt require it.

That said, small reminder that people use VPNs for more than just circumventing the governments surveilance of citizens and digital ID doesnt keep a VPN from being required for those purposes

I dont know.. that shit scares me as both an avid internet user and a father.. but in general, thats why I download and store everything I possibly can now... when that comes, Im too old, but anonymity is the only way any semblance of free speech can exist online and those wanting this clearly do not like that for whatever reason.. Ive never had a vpn, Im sure anyone can find me easily if they want, but like I said it scares me either way..

I sort of wanted to go on a rant about state sponsored censorship and the like, but I'm not sure whether or not that goes against the spirit of the no politics rule. Pfft, rip.

To clarify in an edit: State sponsored censorship and how it relates to Iran and China and the like. I feel like as a base that people should want people to be able to gain knowledge beyond what they're fed, and VPNs are kind of important tools to achieve that sorta stuff. Nobody chooses where they're born and what they're able to do shouldn't be screwed just on that basis. But that might be a little out of scope for thread. But since VPNs are likely being thrust into the forefront by the current situation, it also feels important to point out their maybe "positive" uses? Yeah.

I'll just use a VPN, they will try to regulate it; but they can't do shit.

Exactly and that is why digital ID has zero to do with safety

Yes and that is how these scumbags are advertising it "to protect children", they don't care about the safety of a single child.

It shouldn't do because at the end of the day we are all in this world together and your freedom is the most powerful right you have regards of whether you are still a sheep at the polling station, it isn't political this about our freedom and future.

I feel that Digital ID will turn into the "civil war" of the digital world.

I refuse to proof my identity to entities that refuse to show me theirs — the imbalance would be too steep, the consequences too dire.

Back then i never imagined that there will be a time where i need to give all of my personal data just to watch cat videos.

Right?

Whatever happened to "I'm over 13"? That worked pretty well.

There was even a digital e-signature thingy on newer sites to make sure parents knew if their kids tried to join... a bit obsessive, sure, but it wasn't THIS.

Yet, here I am, stuck in California with no idea where to move yet, with Californian politicians wanting Digital ID and Age Verification on every OS, including Linux. And now need to hope that the current bill excludes Linux so I can actually switch to it legally.
What an asinine time to be alive.
