Visual novel recommendations

My favorite "authentic" Visual Novel is G-senjou no Maou (The Devil on G-string if you prefer). But if hybrids or borderline cases counts, It's the third episode of Phoenix Wright, Trials and Tribulations :giggle:

Read the entire Great teacher Onizuka series in high school.

If the definition is broad enough to count adventure games, then Snatcher and Policenauts.

I don't play a ton of visual novels, but I like those that have a mystery element to them, and usually some gameplay hybridisation.

Zero Escape: 9 Persons, 9 Hours, 9 Doors is a great game with a couple of sequels that I highly recommend.

Danganronpa Trilogy is also awesome even if the fan base has a bad rep these days.

Yeah those are awesome picks. They had actually slipped my mind if you can believe it.

Thanks!

Honestly the only reason they're so fresh in my mind is cus I just finished a replay of Zero Escape: 9,9,9 on Vita, and I have massive feelings of guilt about the nearly unplayed copy of danganronpa trilogy sitting on my switch shelf along with KH: Melody of Memory, and the back half of Metroid Dread.

I did play the whole of Dangan and finished 999. VLR and ZE are still on my list, though.

The only ones I've finished are...Dramatical Murder, Olympia Soiree, Zero Escape trilogy...

I have a playthrough of House in Fata Morgana going, as well as Ai Somnium Files.

Any visual novel fans here? list some recommendations for VNs you really liked, I played Hoshi no Furu Oka a while ago and in spite of it being unremarkable and very obscure, I liked it a lotView attachment 19261
mainly Mareni works (霞外籠逗留記 or 信天翁航海録) or some KeroQ/Makura stuff (終ノ空、 素晴らしき日々)
or if you like lighter works then i highly recommend さくら、もゆ。

My favorites, in no particular order (and will forget many xDDDD I just love the medium):

The Invisibles by Grant Morrison

Fate/Stay Night Remastered and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia are considered classics that started a huge franchise. The short version is that this guy, who was a survivor of a disaster, finds himself in a battle royale between seven mages that summons seven heroes (and anti-heroes) of legends to fight and vye for the Holy Grail, which can grant any wish.

Paranormasight is a horror visual novel. It takes place in the 1980s; a series of urban legends that started back in the Edo period actually have a dark secret underneath: each legend represents a horrifying curse, manifested in artifacts known as “cursed stones” bearing very specific conditions to activate and effects but all of them extremely lethal. These legends are seemly linked to a resurrection ritual that will activate once a certain number of soul dregs are reached, and the death of other curse bearers is more worthwhile than random passerby, making the chosen ones both the hunter and the hunted in this story. (I wrote a review, maybe I should share here)

Doki Doki Literature Club is another horror VN that is famous for its meta surprises and it is one that is better going in as blind as possible.

Ace Attorney series is also very famous for its investigative elements, humor and clever writing. I think I don't need to elaborate here.

Slay the Princess.
You're on a path in the woods, and at the end of that path is a cabin. And in the basement of that cabin is a Princess. You're here to slay her. If you don't, it will be the end of the world.

Witch on the Holy Night is the very first story from the creators of Fate/Stay Night that was shelved for many years. Two witches live in a mansion atop of a hill, and their path coincide with an unassuming boy that until recently was living in the rural area.

I think the phrasing here is a bit strange. Technically this VN came out in 2012. The idea was (edit) about in the mid 90s, but the actual story didn't come out till much later like stated.

Type-Moon's actual first big Visual Novel within this shared "Nasuverse" would be Tsukihime from the year 2000 (which I actually love way more than F/SN despite my having a command seal hand tattoo)

The idea for Witch was shelved before Nasu made Tsukihime and then made after FSN.
If we are going to be pedantic, it started with Notes (or Angel Notes), then Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyokai), Witch on the Holy Night, Tsukihime (and Kagetsu Tohya), Fate/Stay Night and so on. I'm not even counting the deeper cuts like DDD or Canaan.
I actually follow the whole Nasuverse since the pre-release of FSN, I'm that old ::nervous-prinny

Hehehehe, I was going to mention "uhh actually Angel Notes was the first" but I didn't wanna get hyper ultra pendantic xD

I still have all my Tsukihime fan translations downloaded on my old computer (kagetsu tohya and the fan disc + as well)

Also got my physical copy of Fate/Hollow Ataraxia

People in this thread have good taste. The only recs that I have that haven't been mentioned are:
Phenomeno - Mitsurugi Yoishi wa Kowagaranai - Psy Horror. Very short, less than 5 hours.
G-Senjou no Maou - Cat and Mouse, suspense, mystery. I only finished the true route, so I don't know how long it is. True route's absolute cinema though.

Clannad (my favourite vn ever),
Shibuya Scramble,
Higanbana (Download it from Nyaa)
