There are an absolute Fuck Ton of RPGs out there, and I'd love to know what the people consider their own personal comfort games within the genre, whether it be because of associations you make with the game personally, the cozy environment they embody, the inspirations they wear on their sleeves, or what ever you simply consider a comfy cozy experience you could eat up 'till the day you die.

A mi, my first ever comfort food RPG (and first RPG ever.) was Pokemon RSE and its remakes, so much to the point I consider Hoenn my virtual home. On a similar note, I quite loved Cassette Beasts, which puts a unique spin on the monster catching genre, and in my opinion, cultivates one of the coziest RPG experiences to date.

The original Xenoblade for the Wii honestly changed me. I will always look back fondly at it. From the music to the visual identity, the writing and characters, the voice acting, ugh, I can't say enough good things about this game and feel I've adequately expressed my love for it.

The Mother series is another big one for me, as it got me through some tough years when I was still growing up. Clearly I am biased towards the GBA. Undertale also hits me as quite a comfy experience, as an avid Mother appreciator.

Though admittedly I still have yet to play 'till the true ending, This game embodies so much of what I loved about Symphony of the Night and those that came after it. I played probably too much of SotN and Aria of Sorrow, and to feel like these games had merged to make this one made it one of the best action RPG experiences I've ever had.

FE13 is definitely what I would call the comfort food game for the whole series. From how broken you can make a unit, to how challenging it can be on the harder difficulties, it's just a cozy tactical RPG experience that keeps calling me back.

After the weirdness and flaccidity that was Zestiria, I did not have high expectations of Berseria. I was genuinely surprised at how much more I enjoyed this game, being how interwoven it is with Zesty. While I wouldnt exactly call this one "cozy" it definitely sits in a comfortable place in my heart, and has helped solidify Tales as one of my favorite series ever.

-Breath of Fire 4-

Despite the events its graphics really make me feel so serene and take me back to good old summer days of my childhood no matter I play it in the cruel winter days snowing on me (figuratively and literally lol).

-Persona 4-

Not many video games can successfully create a sense of meaningful memories you experience with NPCs just to enjoy them but this game does it so great. In comparison even Persona 5 felt so flat and generic despite you would expect them to learn a lot from Persona 4. It's great the experience all these moments again and again in Persona 4.

-Rogue Galaxy-

You have many planets to experience and the sense of adventure to find. IMO one of the greatest graphics on PS2. Perhaps because of this game I really loved to read and play the Witcher series for the sense of hunt. From time to time I find myself replaying this game over and over again.

-Radiata Stories-

IMO the another one of the greatest graphics on PS2. I started to play for its graphics, hooked up to its sense of humor, enjoyed tons of characters I can befriend and take them to my little wars as my unfortunate companions but stayed for the story and unfortunate fate befall on an ignorant kid who found himself shouldering the fate of the world and the complex nature of which side to choose when all sides seems true and wrong simultaneously. Everyone has their own untold stories that it takes the player to unfold them. Sometimes I play this game just to walk around and have a random battle or two lol.

-Tokyo Xanadu eX+-

Lots of people think this is a Persona clone but for me this is just the Japanese version of an X-Files game despite it's not that similar lol. It's just very immersive to experience all these supernatural events and the sense of the investigation again and again.

-Yakuza: Like a Dragon-

It's worth playing this game over and over again just for its sense of humour.

Alright, I’ll mention a few.

1. Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight while lacking rpg elements, is an incredibly solid Metroidvania with some souls elements. Gorgeous game with gorgeous sprite work, addictive gameplay and lore and a really rich NG+ mode.
2. Dragon Quest III ranks really high amongst my all time greats thanks to job system. It’s addictive trying to craft the perfect team because there’s just so many possible combos!
3. Breath of Fire III is just a really comforting game. I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t wanna control a dragon. It’s also extremely straightforward which adds to the appeal since that’s what I seek in RPGs. I need to play BOF4!

If Comfort Food means RPGs I'd gladly go back to and replay then I'd would be FF4, FF9. Legend of Legaia, Valkyria Chronicles, Ys 7, 8, 9, 10 and Valkyrie Profile.

I also love Undertale/deltarune, just because of its great storytelling and interactivity. Omori, FF7. I just have great memories with all of these games, and talking about them with close friends of mine. A good RPG very much does that. Kinda like how I hear people getting lost in a book, but much better as no book worth any time is 300 hours long.

The persona games do a great job of making you feel part of the social circle in the game, dunno how they do it so well, but it works.

A great RPG will make you feel like you're there with the characters, that disconnect between the fiction and the person becomes quite thin and the game is all the more engrossing.

morrowind, oblivion, kotor, fallout new vegas, kingdom hearts 1&2 are all games i keep coming back to.

A while back it was Oblivion on the Xbox 360. After getting back from life guarding, and dealing with annoying kids and parents it was nice to just unwind in the woods.

As for a game I would just go back to, got that is so hard to pin down. It depends on my mood, but I guess Pokemon Emerald or one of the many ROM hacks to smooth some edges down.

Any open world racing game really, i just drive around for a few mins, maybe an hour. GTA5 has that same effect for me with a few added features like tennis and randomly attacking citizens lol

Breath of The Wild. I've been playing it daily since I got my Switch nearly eight years ago and am still finding new things to do in this game. On my Steam Deck OLED it's MGSV, If I'm away from home it's Peace Walker or Mario 64 on my PSP Go.
