Vidya Comfort Food

there are several i could name, but im gonna go with sonic riders. it was the first game i got to choose for myself when stopping at a game store as a child, and it was the game that cemented my love for sonic and racing games.

Games I come back to often aren't necessarily comfort games for me. I just really enjoy them. Tenchu, symphony of the night, Megaman X4, Megaman legends, Demons Crest, Sekiro, Bloodborne, ff7, mario 64 etc etc

Comfort games for me are ones that pick me up a bit if I'm tired/down or upset/angry about something, like op said. Something to help me get a bit of zen. Mine have evolved over time, it used to punisher on the pc. Smashing enemies in the face and scoring top points was therapeutic at the time lol.

Currently my comfort games are:
Dungeon of the endless
Kingdoms (most often Two Kingdoms)
Shadow of Memories/Shadow of Destiny
Umihara Kawase (SNES)
Vagante / Noita - (lonesome, solitary, slightly slow-paced / careful dungeon exploration.)

One that I don't play myself but enjoy watching a friend playing is OMSI 2, a bus driving sim. Sometimes just "catching the bus" can be very relaxing which I also sometimes just have on in the background while I work / do chores.

I kind of rotate comfort games. But one type of game that always relaxed me growing up was racing games. I love just turning off the music, taking away the challenge, and just driving around in circles. (Bonus points if its raining in the game.)

Or just Ratchet and Clank.

Super Castlevania 4, which is the only game i play every year. Its my favorite of all time.

Outside of that, the entire Kirby series fits into this category. Easy to play, fun to complete, and the series always has a new entry on the horizon so i never get left hanging.

I jump around games way too much to really have ONE comfort game... but I do always return to my favorite genres, anything in those when I'm feeling in the mood leaves me comfy. I do come back to classic Doom a lot, love me some of that.

Now, I have noticed a VERY distinct improvement on my mental state a while ago, when I got back into Monster Hunter after being in a bad funk for a while. it's one of my favorite franchises of all time.

Chibi-Robo! Plug into Adventure! released in 2005, another game that I forgot to mention, I find it very comforting, and it really surprised me how the story of this game is surprisingly dark, considering that this game is for children, this is a game where you play as a tiny robot that goes around mopping the floors, picking the trash, finding a retired pirate's old ship, curing aliens from a common cold, witnessing the death of a single father, helping the army rescue private memphis, dealing with a space ranger's identity crisis over his own job, getting his family through a possible divorce by killing a mechanical spider, and being just damn cute (and also becoming a frog).

For a game that looks like it's for kids it touches on a LOT of dark topics. Sunshine Bear is a pretty on-the-nose allegory for addiction, then there's the deaths of both Giga Robo and Funky Phil, the main plotline of the dysfunctional marriage with a mention of divorce is really harsh. I love this game.

Imagine Someone said my Comfort game is Dark Souls I play it to relax. For Me it would be probably games like Minecraft or some Ps2 games for Nostalgia sake its always something to play games you played as a kid it makes you remember more easier times.

Burnout Paradise. Putting on a custom playlist and bumping cars off to it is cathartic. Car-thartic even.

Burnout 3: Takedown would be my next choice, but I don't currently have a copy.

Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney all deserve a mention as well for the nostalgia that they invoke in me.

I have the feeling I've already answered this question lol

One of my comfort games has to be Dark Souls 1, and I'm not kidding. The lonely and bleak atmosphere somehow soothes my mind, although it's been quite some time since I last played it.

My other one would be World of Warcraft vanilla, nothing gets as comfy as leveling at night in The Barrens

mood. some of my comfiest (and at the same time scariest and most tense) gaming moments happened playing something dark like Dark Souls and Stalker Gamma. Traveling through the Truck Cemetery looking for leftover loot on the vehicles, while keeping an eye out for roaming Chimeras, is somehow super chill for me. Also, being so far away from any shelter in case an Emission starts... good times.

There are certain games that still hit me with a wave of nostalgia when I play them. They're a call back to simpler times for me, though I don't play them often. Final Fantasy Legend 2, Banjo Kazooie, and Wind Waker still get me.

It’s probably Klonoa, that’s a dead franchise I love more than ever.

It’s one I can't really go back to full-playthrough wise because it’s a game I believe you experience once but it is still fun to go back to and play a level.
