Such a brutal price hike. I don't know if these will keep selling when they cost about the same as a ROG Ally that has better specs.

I'm sure there will be significantly less negativity surrounding this price hike compared to other ones happening these days. People love the Steam monopoly.

I'm regretting not getting one earlier now.
Screw these AI companies and these tariffs. Legitimately ruining our hobby.

On the Steam website in their search bar, the search result still show an old price €419,-. It's not the same version though. That one is sold out. Nonetheless, the cheapest now is almost twice that price. Anyway, I find it weird they don't sell a cheaper one than these 2 they have now in store.
Even their Steam dock is overpriced at €89,-. For example, Retroid sells their dock for $29,90.

You hate to see it. That's kind of ridiculous, but understandable.
I'm glad I got my 1tb OLED when it was around $700, and I thought it was expensive then.

I used to think of Steam as the best alternative but ever since I stopped playing in PC regularly, That has changed. Playing on platforms like Steam has its cons no one can neglect, Not truly owning a game and being subject of how the service will allow the access, Heavily giving incentive to its user to put more money to it and competing to see who has the profile with most background gifs and effects, etc.

And as dkpopman said up here in the thread, A lot of people "Love the Steam monopoly" I really can't be sure if the people who heavily tolerate Valve's flaws do it because they based their opinion on the experience they had with the platform or because they hate the other companies. I showed the new with 2 Discord friends and they immediately minimized the increase of the price by saying "Switch 2 is more expensive" even though both things are around the same price, And that Switch 2 has slowly reduced its price.

Back to the main topic, Ever since the Switch 1 came out, 'Portable' consoles lost their focus on making games with a completely different approach in their development in order to make an actually portable console and not requiring long battery and being something that was easier to invest in.

Now it all comes down to have the Portable thing being able to have the same games you can play on a console or PC but with worse graphics, And you're basically carrying a big tablet that you can barely hold and can't transport easily, I bring this up because I saw a comment on a site saying if portable consoles are even worth it after these prices, Simply put, Where is the difference when I can play the same game on a console with better performance and with a better experience. Portable consoles mean to me something you can easily take outside, Are convenient to distract yourself when you are not in home.

Home and portable consoles were completely different ways to enjoy game, Up until the Switch came out, The experience would become the same thing after some years passed.

I know some people simply want to play their best games on the go but if that becomes the entirety of portable consoles, Then what's the point on getting a home console with wheels?

This all makes it so that anyone doesn't care for what experience you can get from the console but just getting the console with best performance and the games you want to play (Supposing they're exclusive).

I wanted to share these thoughts and I know some of you will disagree and I can understand that; I just can't go and say I have a correct opinion, More importantly, It can change based on anyone's circumstances, Maybe one of you has to go outside everyday and you want to keep up with the new games, Or a portable device is more convenient for you, Once more, These were my thought and I want to express myself.

They literally just killed themselves with that. They should at least bring back the 64gb LCD model as damage control.

it's pretty much pointless to even bother selling them at this price.
I honestly don't get why they bothered restocking them for the 10 or so people who'll buy them over the next 6 months ::cirnoshrug

it's always interesting how monopolies are bad but steam gets a free pass.
if people genuinely challenged themselves to play on a PC for a year independent of valve they'd be surprised just how much they genuinely just own the platform as a gaming medium.
pretty much any new game you aren't getting, thats for sure.

Steering away from the AI chat that will inevitably get this thread closed, as much as I hate the price hikes on tech. Due to my hobby of building PCs inside dead game consoles, I don't really blame Valve. Now, hold on a minute, I'm not a Steam/Valve fangirl. I like the platform, not love it. But I do understand the price hikes. They have to recover costs for the RAM, storage, along with a slew of other parts that people never talk about.

Yes, I know someone is going to point out that these decks were made before whatever hike happened recently. I don't know if there was one, but it wouldn't surprise me.

The point is, at the end of the day, Valve, even though they are about the most consumer-friendly company, are still a business. Why people are surprised when they raise prices, like every other company does, is beyond me. Getting angry, irked, or whatever because they do the same is as bad as being on the flip side and defending Nintendo for price gouging, like a lot of fanboys/girls do.

It sucks to be in this hobby price wise right now, but it won't last forever. Just enjoy what you have for now, prices will start to taper off and eventually drop, probably by 2030.

It isn't anger or lack of understanding why, it just doesn't make sense.
You can buy a ROG or switch 2 for the same price / cheaper now so anyone who is in the market for a portable gaming handheld is just going to buy one of them.
it makes no sense to go through the effort of restocking and manufacturing them if they are going to be behind alternatives in specs and cost more.
the Xbox handheld even has support for steam so its pointless to buy a steam deck at this point.

For those prices you could get a stronger handheld

Nevermind the fact that it probably costs $50 to make and we are in the middle of a multiple war economy.

OH... IM SORRY!!

no scratch that, Im not sorry at all

I have seen how Valve/Steam fans have become even worse than Nintendo Fans always downplaying Steam flaws and justifying everything they do as necessary while the rest 'shoot themselves in the foot' because they say so.

It is SO ridiculous that I have seen people in other forums, like NeoGAF, thinking the GabeCube would be 500 bucks... like, fr bro? And this is just the first cruel awaking for the Valve fan knights, the Gabecube will not only be expensive, but it also wont be the machine they think it is.

I have a SteamDeck, I love it to death and I daily play on it (literally, I do my Gacha dailies there, so I cant skip a day). The materials are top notch: the screen (I have a regular one), plastic, buttons, etc. Even the Overlay is kind of cool, and by using a cheap 3rd party 'hub' and some Xbox 360 controller it is basically just a switch.

But SteamOS? Oh boy... I will just skip the 'Select the correct Proton version', that can be a pain for normies and people used to Windows. But OS is just... bad. Like I can tell you it is not an exception when the system just gets stucks when launching a game, sometimes the Steam Input just dies and I had to hard reset the SD or sometimes I can see that the game launched but the overlay bugged and I cant see a thing. And mind you, this happens in 'Steamdeck verified' games.

So yeah, by that price it is not worth it.

Yeah I miss when portable gaming was actually portable.

Not only the systems would take advantage of the fact that you will carry the game with you, but the games where designed for a bus ride or to kill some times.

They talk about 'gaming on the go!' but just imagine taking you Steamdeck/switch out on the subway/bus. you will have to open you back pack, find a place with space to use, versus just using a Nintendo DS/PSP: take it out of your pocket.

I had no plans are getting this, even when it was barely at the price of seven hundred dollars. I don't hate Valve for it but fuck companies being heavily invested in AI.

Yeah, I never had any interest in the original Steam Deck and have about the same level of interest in this one. I don't need to play Cyberpunk 2077 on the go, you know? I'm quite happy with my handheld that can run PS1, PSP, GBA, etc., and that actually fits in my pocket.

Like @BrawlMan said, I don't hate Valve for the price hikes, I know it's not really their fault. But I'm not going to spend a thousand batbucks on a "handheld" when I could take that $1000 batbucks and build a spiffy PC with it or a better Steam Deck of my own design.

You got an RG35XXH too? Love that device. You can even plug it into the TV. The mini hdmi to hdmi converter is separate though. Worth it. I plan on getting their newer device later, as it can play PS2 and GC games.

Nah, I have a TrimUI Smart Pro S.
It can do Dreamcast, no PS2 sadly but it plays everything I care enough to pack around and play when I'm away from home. Mainly some Dead or Alive 2, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and a few others.
