Underrated games...

wild arms needs all the love i want it to come back but ik sony would never bother
Not quite the same thing, but Armed Fantasia is a spiritual successor in development. Penny Blood is the same thing for Shadow Hearts.

Lufia II first came to mind, but that was already said. Maybe Paladin's Quest? It was janky, abrasive, but also surreal and interesting. I'll also maintain until my dying breath that Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is awesome and underrated. A lot of PS1 RPGs have gotten love and ports to modern platforms, but Breath of Fire III somehow hasn't. The beginning drags a bit but it gets great after that.

Everything Mistwalker. Lost Odyssey has been getting more love lately because of the Expedition 33 dev talking about it. Also Blue Dragon, The Last Story, and Fantasian.

I agree with Shadow Hearts (I think Lost Odyssey devs previously worked on this), Enchanted Arms, and Jade Empire.

I have a soft spot for Enchanted Arms since it was the first "next gen" JRPG that I played for the 7th generation:

I actually liked some of the music. It wasn't as bad as Evergrace in this department (another non-mainstream From RPG that I love alongside its sequel Forever Kingdom).

Another cool one that's forgotten to time is Sudeki on the original Xbox.

Jeanne D'Arc on PSP is such a great entry-level tactical RPG with a compelling story and amazing presentation. And if you've played all the Shin Megami Tensei games but still want more, check out Phantom Dust on the original XBOX.

Also, did anyone else play the Lord of the Rings RPGs on GBA? Amazing Diablo clones.

I really liked Brand New Quest, the adventure mode added to the home release of Ehrgeiz.

Koudelka for PS1. Also part of the Shadow Hearts series, and a really cool combination of horror and rpg elements. It has great atmosphere and tone thanks to Hiroki Kikuta's music and the decision to record the dialogue via motion captured actors in the same room with one another.

Legend of Legaia for PS1. The writing can be a little basic, but the battle system is pretty unique. Also, there's a patch to help smooth out some progression changes that were made during localization. I'm very nostalgic for this game and I was disappointed when the sequel for PS2 wasn't a direct continuation.

Shining Force III

Metal Walker on the Gameboy Color is obscure but underrated too.
1000093703.jpg

Leveling up and evolving that Robo-bro into the embodiment of an walking nuclear holocaust is awesome and it has the Metal Max vibes in its sleeve too.
One major flaw that is a two parter :

-The encounter rate is waaaaayyyyyy too damn high !!! What made those unnecessary encounters worse ?

-To escape a battle you must bash your robot into the small open door frame and even aim to it . When that doesnt work , you are forced to fight it out till the end with all the unskippable animations , jingles and text-boxes .

Otherwise a great and obscure game indeed that needs some sequels too .

Sword World SFC should be huger than it is already known.
1000089521.jpg

Its japanese Baldurs Gate before Baldurs Gate .
While it lacks stuff like magical weapons/armor , its still a great RPG how it should be. More oldschool TTRPG D&D and less linear & fancy visual novel with a bit combat sprinkled around .
And especially ITS NOT JUST ANOTHER DEMON KING ACCIDENT NO. 69666 THAT WANTS TO KILL THE WORLD WITH A MCGUFFIN OF WORLDLY DEATH !!!

GOD .... sorry but that must be out of the system or i vomit another chosen one who needs to defeat a japanese Satan with magical death-dildo for Xth amount of time .

Needs way more sequels and i hope the second game gets translated early and quickly too .

Shadowrun on the Snes was way too awesome to end with ONE GAME !!!
1000093704.jpg

We all need more shadowrun in life , Chummer . The Snes Game promised us the second game and sadly we didnt got one .

Still waiting for good Shadowrun games that have the same atmossphere and ambience like the Snes game . The PC-games from the 2010s were cool ... i guess... but those arent so stylish and on the point like the Snes game . The Genesis one is great too .
I would buy a great Shadowrun game for good amount of Nuyen in a heartbeat , chummer . Cant have nice things in an dystopia like this .

I don't know a whole lot of other RPG's where the characters figure out they're in a video game and try their best to escape.
I have never heard anyone else talk about this game and only infrequently have I seen it mentioned so I don't really know what the general consensus regarding this title is. The only downside to this game is I played it for so long I forgot about some character motivations and even some of their back stories. The cooking mini game was my favorite thing back in the PS2 days though. I remember my siblings would play some of the mini games on my save just for fun.

>But it has a bajillion games and an Anime
Yes, but ask some one who isn't a die hard Sega nerd or a weeb about Neptunia and see how the conversation goes

Jade Empire, from Bioware. It's a sin it never got a sequel.
I remember when Jade Empire came out. It always looked interesting to me but I never got a chance to play it. It also kind of got lost under the bigger Bioware titles.
I'll also maintain until my dying breath that Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is awesome and underrated.
Mystic Quest is the first rpg I ever beat. I have a lot of good memories playing it and my mom liked the game so much she named our dog after one of the characters. Also still one of the best snes soundtracks up there with Megaman X.

I remember renting this some time and not really liking it for some reason. I don't remember why. I enjoyed the snes Star Ocean so I'm not sure why I didn't like the ps2 one.

I don't know any underrated RPGS I could have said SaGa or parasite eve but SaGa has enough appeal to get remasters and remakes also i think the series sold over 3 million copies so definitely not underrated.

I would say parasite eve , middle of Manhattan going on a 5 days investigation with biological themes great game it has some issues (aya walk speed kek) and it's pretty short but not bad overall.

But yeah thanks for recommendation shadow hearts and koudelka alright gonna add that to the list thanks guys for fueling my never ending JRPG spree ::warcraft-skeleton

It's a shame Square Enix still refuses to pay the royalties to Hideaki Sena, the original Author of Parasite Eve. That's the major bottleneck stopping any re-release, re-master or a new game.
The Third Birthday wound up being so... Different due to this refusal to properly acquire a renewed license for the Novel's concepts & characters.
But fans got tired of waiting, we have a spiritual successor in Parasite Mutant

Bloody hell the fighting looks 1:1 modern PE1 combat system.

Oh i didn't know it's licensing issues that prevent the series from being continued what a Shame....

A lot of these fan translated PS1 games like Linda³ Again and Popolocrois Monogatari are excellent and very respected in japan, but weren't localized simply because they weren't 3D. It's was such a missed opportunity.

Lots of CRPGs fall into this too, for example the only Troika game remembered is VtMB. Arcanum rarely gets mentioned outside of cult RPG lists, but I'd say I like it as much as the early Fallouts. And Temple of Elemental Evil although undercooked did so many things better than the NWN games.

Wild Arms looks pretty interesting. Wild West with anime characters is something you don't often see except in things like Trigun. Is the story any good or you just blast stuff around?

I've only played the first one, and its been like 20 years, but yeah I remember really liking it a lot.
The things I remember the most besides the cool Wild West atmosphere were the great soundtrack and the puzzle solving.

Everything Mistwalker.
Another Mistwalker fan! Does anyone remember The Last Story on the Wii? It should be remembered more since that was the last game MIstwalker did before they decided to focus on mobile games. (Thankfully Fantasian is on console now, but it doesn't feel the same lol)

I was going to mention Lunar and hype it up but I don't feel like its truly underrated, the same with a lot of titles mentioned here. But after whracking my brain, I thought of one.

Uncharted Waters.

Fucking love this one!

I'd recommend the Metal Max games. While the first Famicom one is a bit DQ levels of grind heavy, it's got tons of charm

Also the Front Mission series
I recommend 3x3 Eyes on the Super Famicom, it's a unique experience you may enjoy

I'd say that Lost Odyssey and The Last Story are the two best Mistwalker games.

That is actually the Star Ocean I'm currently in since I've previously played First Departure on PSP and Second Story R on Steam. I doubt I'll ever replay these games more than once, but I know they have an insane amounts of endings.
