Underhated games

I think Undertale is incredible achievement. It was initially developed by just a couple of people in their teens.
Meh. There are countless classics much better and more important than Undertale made by 1-2 people with much more limited hardware at their era. Also they didn't begged for donations to make them like Undertale creator has. Also many other games (both commercial and homebrew ones) were made by 1-2 people that are much more impressive. Also Undertale creators weren't even teens when they made this game. And generally it's overrated as hell and it's everything wrong with all these Western Earthbound wanabee games that can't truly understand what made Earthbound so great.

Honestly, it was probably a ton of people’s first RPG ( it was mine ) and it’s got a decent narrative.
I wouldn't say it was decent, mediocre enough to pass at best.

I think Undertale is an incredible achievement. It was initially developed by just a couple of people in their teens. The music is tremendous, and very memorable. It has a nice mix of comedy, heartfelt moments and generally well- paced story telling. The primary creator of the game first got into game dev by modifying Earthbound ROM's, hence the similarities. And the first 2 parts of Deltarune, about 6 hours of content, were released for free. It's a game I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone.

But hey, that and a fiver will buy you a cup of coffee.
The music is the only thing I liked about it.

I dunno jfc, the open world feels so separate from the tightly-paced, stellar map design of the earlier games (stellar for the most part) that if anything I'd argue that Elden Ring is becoming further and further removed from some of the aspects that made the earlier Souls games so memorable. You only need look to the battle royale inspired Nightreign for proof.
My problem with Elden Ring is more the combat rather than the Open World (even though i'm still not a big fan of the Open World either), they are still using the same combat system from Dark Souls 1 with barely any improvements more than 10 fucking years later.

The music is the only thing I liked about it.
Even the soundtrack is overrated. And it's plagiarism - the soundtrack. Then again it's not surprise since the creator's only "gaming experience" was Earthbound romhacks. Why they treat him as a gaming celebrity even in Japan is beyond me.

I won't argue the first point, I was speaking solely with regards to the quality of Undertale and Deltarune.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning when it comes to crowd-funded games....Are you saying that any creator that asks/begs for money to make something is of a lesser status than someone who does not?

Overrated, maybe. In my eyes it gets all the praise it deserves.

What is it that made Earthbound so great that Undertale lacks?

That's right, what are some games you think everyone loves but you feel like the only one that hates it? What are some games you feel even scared of sharing your opinion with others because just saying anything negative about it would make you crucified?
I will start

I can't stand any metroid or castlevania games, actually i can't stand any metroidvania game. I just think they are boring and clearing the levels feel like a big chore. Too much backtracking and it's so tiring seeing the same enemies again and again.
I said it, you can now throw your stones, i'm ready

gore⁶ - "Metroid is a terrible game."
Samus - "Your Honor, I object!"

I usually assume that the games that don't click with me but resonate with others must have qualities that I am somehow unable to either see or appreciate, so I don't think there are many (if any) games out there that deserve hatred.
Now, insipid or exploitative industry trends? Pandering and/or manipulative marketing/social media bullshit and general publisher fuckery? Hell yeah that deserves all the hate ever.

But I suppose to give an actual answer... I mean, I found FF7 Remake incredibly bloated, obnoxious and way too anime trope heavy, to the point that I couldn't finish it and found its highly positive reception utterly confusing. Fun combat though! Does that count?
I was gonna type this exact message, so I'll just echo your sentiment.

I haven't beaten either game, and while Castlevania definitely is a chore right of the bat, I feel like Metroid, with a bit more varied basic combat and the opressive horror atmosphere makes the backtracking thing work. I never felt bored cause I was always too afraid of what horrible alien abomination is gonna randomly jump out at me next and what if I run out of rockets when I need them most ahhh! Then again I'm a whimp and am afraid of a lot of games that are supposed to be just action.
tldr Metroid > Castlevania, don't ya pile em together imma cut you ?

With that out of the way it's my day job to hate games everyone likes:
Mario - like what's even good about it if you are not like 3?
Sonic - they so busy making it fast, they didn't stop to think if it's any fun
Pokemon - let us demonstrate everything that is wrong with jrpg gameplay
Final Fantasy - can you be more incoherent? ... ah, yeah, SMT, right...
Earthbound - does it have a good story? I don't know cause gameplay is so boring my brain shuts off before I can get anywhere
Zelda - there was one good game on a gameboy, for a gameboy game... that's it...
Doom - cheap wolfenstein reskin, made it worse and introduced and popularized some of the worst FPS mechanics
Diablo 2 - has anybody played the 1st? are yall blind? lizzard is what it is now cause you gobbled this shit up, smh
Metal Gear - more like mid gear
God of War - press button - watch cartoon, lets adventure game fans pretend they like hack and slash
Dark Souls - From Software just can't make a hack and slash if their lives depended on it, it's so bad buyers remorse be like "no, this can't be, it must be intentional", so they just doubled down on it so hard there is no going back, everyone will have to pretend it's a thing now forever to save face
The Witcher 3 - ok, we have officially gone off rails, point of no return, this is proof the industry is just hopelessly fucked, to anyone who thinks this is good - you are the reason we can't have nice things anymore

What a thrill

Now, by no means do I believe Final Fantasy VII is a bad game. In fact, the first time I played it I loved it. Upon replay, however, I started to notice just how utterly broken and buggy the game is, to the point that I can't even play the game anymore. For that reason alone I list this game.

Good points. There's a moment in my life that i've got so addicted to Undertale that nowadays I can't stand anything related to it lol. But i agree that because of the structure of the game, although not original, made a big impact when it launched in to the game industry.

I know a lot of people are going to be mad at me but I consider Persona 5 to be one of the worst stories I've ever seen in a video game, the social commentary that this game makes about Japanese society is horrible, its soundtrack is overrated, its not bad but its far from being Meguro's best work (especially compared to his work in games like Nocturne and the Digital Devil Saga duology), the characters are poorly written and full of generic anime tropes, its story starts off interesting enough at first with the Kamoshida arc which has a good message about adults abusing teenagers but unfortunately the story gets much worse after that and the villains are incredibly one dimensional, its gameplay is good but I also like good storytelling and unfortunately persona 5 doesn't have a good story, at least the third semester of Royal is better than the rest of the game.

Fuck yeah someone said it, i really agree with this. And i'm tired of seeing persona in every single corner

The Last Of Us - it's boring, generic, AAA walky talky cinematic narrative slop. Gameplay is so weak, and everyone praises the story, but its the most generic thing ever.

God Of War 2018 - same issues as The Last Of Us, but it also ruined the God Of War franchise in the process. Just a horrible, HORRIBLE game. Terrible characterizations, terrible combat, stupid story, bad world building, and awful connection to the God Of War legacy.

Sekiro - It's not a Souls game, not an action RPG, and not a particularly good action game either. Combat centers entirely around parrying, giving no combat freedom, no combos, etc. There's not leveling, no builds. I don't get the hype for it when literally every other From Soft game is significantly better.

Five Nights At Freddy's - It's such a boring nothing of a game. Unengaging, stupid gameplay, with a lack of anything interesting. It's not even remotely scary or atmospheric. I hate this franchise and have no idea how it's still such a cultural phenomenon.

EDIT: DOOM 3 - Might be surprising, but I do not like DOOM 3. It's slow, and tedious to play. Especially the first half where you're waiting for train cars and moving cranes. Reloading and slow movement speed clash with DOOM's gameplay philosophy. I get they were trying to go for a "horror DOOM game", but it just doesn't work for me. The BFG Edition is slightly better, with increased movement speed, more ammo, and the flashlight on your shoulder making the game slightly more fast paced and action oriented, but it's still my least favorite DOOM game ever made, and I never feel the desire to replay it ever.

And not specific, but every game that is victim to censorship and/or poor localization should be subject to more criticism. It's a shame most people don't care about issues like that.
