Trials-of-Mana-U.jpg

By: Yumi on 14 Jan 2026 My Patch Combo Review for Trials of Mana (ToM) I put together this extensive patch combination for the Trials of Mana (2019) ROM (Trials of Mana (World) (En) (Collection of Mana).sfc, from the Collection of Mana. The patches were installed strictly in the order listed below – this sequence ensures full compatibility with no conflicts or crashes. I played through the entire game (all routes) without any freezes, crashes or noticeable bugs. Big thanks to all the creators! #1 BUGFIX 1.10_compat_with_ToM.ips (by eltipope) #2 Hues of Mana - Complete v1.1.ips (by Red Soul) #3 […]

My old save file seems to work fine with both the ToM and SD3 versions. I'm before you class change though, so that might be a factor.

Here is my combo
1)Class Balance - equipments
2)bug fix
3)menu freeze fix
3)better starting stats
4)less grinding
5)more evade changes
6)hues of mana

I'm going to play it on Vita (with emu): should I get the "Trials" or the "Seiken (English)", because I don't really understand the differences. Also, is one of them more "bugged" than the other? Thank you!
TLDR Explanation: The files in this post ALL have the same bugfix/enhancement patches (which are described) except one Trials of Mana patch is 3 players and the other 2 players.

"ToM" and "SD3 English" have different scripts.

"Seiken Densetsu 3 English" is the original fan translation circa Y2K.
I believe the submitted SD3 patched file contains the 3-player patch, sorry for any confusion!

"Trials of Mana" is the official Square localization from a few years ago.

More info: What is "Seiken Densetsu 3 English", then?

It was a real landmark in fan translations, so it's historically significant. I thought this didn't need explanation but it probably does.

Some people prefer the old fan translation to the new, official script, so I submitted that it be added to this post.

If you want to learn more about the differences in the scripts, than that there are lots of opinions online. I usually prefer fan translations so for instance I'm playing the Aeon Genesis Live a Live over the official Square one, and I'm playing "SD3 English" over "ToM" (though it's mainly because it will fit on a real SD3 cartridge, which ToM's ROM does not).

Also the SD3 English patch has a modified "running in battle" patch since people mentioned not liking how the ToM patches handled that.

Seems to be missing the useful energyball patch compared to the one shared by Onionball in the comments of this one. But otherwise, this one seems to be the most comprehensive patch combo for this game.
I don't know the specifics but each of these newer bugfix patches (which these files have applied) address the energy ball in the bugfix patch notes.

Thx for the suggestion, I added the fan translation and applied this same littany of patches!

Turns out you can't burn ToM to a real SD3 cartridge anyway easily so I'm glad you mentioned this, so I could go back and figure out patch combos for the SD3 fan translation.

Thanks very much Spike!

ALSO if anyone needs a smaller file lemme know.

The ToM ROM itself as well as the main SD3 bugfix patches both made the ROM 6MB, which is a huge pain to burn onto a real game board (I like programming the EN version and/or fanhacks onto JP cartridges).

I figured out the best combo of patches from that list that I could that keeps the ROM to the normal size, and I burned it all to my SD3 cart and it's all working OK so far.

This other bugfix/addendum patch does not expand the ROM, so I used this one instead of the praetarius bugfix: . https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7094/

So basically this other Jr patch combo has all the listed patches except these two patches:
- Run in Battle (BOTH versions of the Run in Battle patches expanded the ROM to 6MB)
- praetarius5018 bugfixes (NO version of these patches kept the ROM its default size)

And the Jr Combo uses the fan translation and not ToM, which is 6MB by default.

Again, so if you burn your hacks to your real cartridges, you could maybe make use of this new patch combo so lemme know if you think it should be posted.

OTHER STUFF

Spike was good enough to add some credits about other stuff I do how I do my own retrogame music arrangements on piano and do tutorials, and my Phantasy Star IV Retranslation. Check them out if those sound helpful. I don't monetize romhacking or the YouTube channel, I just like providing something that might help people ;)

I'm always so confused when games get an update because I can never see a simple list of notes with a date attached to it briefly explaining what's been changed.

I'm confused, notes on the differences & what is included is so muddy! Make it simple....

Link 1: Blah blah.

Link 2: Blah blah,

Link 3: Blah blah blah.

This format that has been used only works if you only include one download link etc.

Can the descriptions format be cleaned up abit please spike??

So what is the actual difference between the first 2 downloads exactly, what is included in each one & what is excluded please ??

Added Seiken Densetsu 3 English Patched (+ all the other patches) but with an alt patch top run normally.
Fixed credits.
Thank Ghaleon !
When you say all the other patches does that include the 3P patch as well?

can som1 pls post a list of all the changes?

i meant the 3d remake trials is VERY similar to kingdom hearts, combos on air and ground, 2 almost useless ai partners, having a dodge roll and lockon, the entire feeling is like KH gameplay to me
the remake feels VERY kingdom hearts inspired.
Oh ok I understand. It does make sense they would need to update the combat from the snes version moving to 3d. I remember it being basically like Zelda with a spell menu and different weapons. Kingdom Hearts style gameplay is probably the better choice over something like the FF7 remake or Dark Souls. I do remember liking the first two Kingdom Hearts games anyway. But that could have just been the novelty of a Disney game made by the Final Fantasy. I never played the rest.

EDIT: I have to press B and Y at the same time for the 3x3 menu to come up because for some reason
yep i tried 3 different emulators have to press Y+B for main menu
EDITED:
okay the PATCH for "running in a battle" literally changes the main menu to B+Y
"This hack enables running in battle by holding down the B button.
Tech usage has been switched to the Y button as it is currently unused.
Activation of the menu is achieved by pressing Y+B outside of battle."
i guess its a change to prevent accidental menu opening
but yeah maybe THIS patch combo should have a readme or mention this change so no one else gets confused?

FYI I'm the patch submitter but I have NOT played through ToM myself, I am taking thuis RHDN reviewer's word for this (but I'm involved in the scene and I trust this person's information).

Since I provided the patch I'll monitor this thread and if there is anything I can do to submit a corrected version, I'll resubmit to the site. I just wanted to finally make my own cart out of the JP version and I was stumped on what patches to apply. This all sounded like the best way to experience the game.

The patched ROM loads in this order and I can play it on real hardware, so that's as far as I got!

I THINK this patch combo also works for the fan-translation. I usually prefer fan translations over official, but I'm going to be playing the game for the first time, and the official translation being newer, I wasn't sure which people would prefer to have on the site.

If people prefer the fan translation (like I just burned Aeon Genesis's Live a Live to my real JP cart) post up and I can probably patch and submit it to this site

Nice! Can you do something like this for Secret of Mana?
I followed this review's comments on RHDN, who already mapped out how to patch this -- I was frustrated trying to find the best SD3/ToM to burn to my real JP cartridge, so I followed these directions then submitted this to save others further work and frustration. I would also like a "revised" comprehensive SoM since I am not fond of the additions in the Retranslated version.

I would suggest taking an hour sometime and combining patches on RHDN, and fish around the forums to see if someone has already figured it out, and submit to RGT here for others' enjoyment too!

It's been so long since I played the original but even just the short amount I did play seemed pretty different. It's been a long time since I played Kingdom Hearts too though so I'm notbsure exactly what you mean.

Uhhh, unless I'm somehow managing to completely miss a button on my controller, I can't open up the full 3x3 menu grid at all. I emulate SNES games regularly and have never had an issue with mapping, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I even humored the situation to remap everything and the grid still won't open, so I can't equip anything. RIP.

EDIT: I have to press B and Y at the same time for the 3x3 menu to come up because for some reason, despite being bound correctly (and even checking after rebinding) the Y button is also functioning as a secondary B button and won't engage on its own without canceling out that second incidence of B by... pressing B? So it's apparently BY/B= Y and I don't know how I ended up with a calculus situation but I'm shit at math and this is hard.
yeah i ALSO have to hit B+Y to open menu, that's really weird

You can use this one by Onionhorse. It was in the comments of the fan-translated SK3 page. This SK3 hack apparently contains -

Seiken Densetsu 3: bugfix edition
Better Monsters and Maps
Better Starting Stat
Class Balance + No Skill Counter
Black Rabite respawn version
Useful Energy Ball
Item & Shop Changes 2.8 - full grail
Less Grinding
More Evade Changes
Hues of Mana

The only additional patches you need to add are - running in combat, tech update and menu freeze mods.

And voila you got Seiken Densetsu 3 version of the mod combo. Tho somebody needs to test if everything is running all good with this one.
Thanks a lot for the suggestion.
I tried doing this but ran into a problem. I can't seem to be able to make it work with the running_in_battle patch. The game keeps looping the Square Enix and intro cutscene screens.
This is my first time trying to patch a ROM this much so I have no idea what could possibly be causing the problem.
I was able to make it work with the Y-restoration version of running_in_battle but that one is, IMO, inferior and annoying.

can both versions be played normally? or is the 3 player one multiplayer only?
They can both be played single player. The way the Mana games for SNES handle multiplayer is the 2nd and 3rd controller port have to press start to activate or deactivate their control of the other party members. On bootup the game has 1 character controlled by port 1 and the other 2 by the computer and you can press select to switch between your actively controlled character.

Amazing, man, incredible work here. I already beat 2 paths in the snes and all 3 in the remake, but im going to clear the last snes path left here with this patch.

Congratz!!

the 3d remake is EXTREMELY different, and also much MUCH shorter than the SNES game
i like both versions SNES and Remake but man don't think they're the same game outside the story plot.
basically a whole genre change to me
like going from secret of mana to kingdom hearts
The 3D remake is only shorter because it's faster paced,. It has all of the same areas and some bonus content like an extra class change and large bonus dungeon + boss.
