On a serious note: This changes nothing. If you get rid of the burrow but not the vermin, are you really doing pest control? User will migrate and the shit train will continue. Spyware? Yes, as all other social media apps (pssst, you guys are on a list too) but killing off tiktok is a good thing, now the brainrot won't be centralized on that platform. It will be interesting to see how the users adapt. The worst thing that could happen is that the floodgates get opened and we see a similar effect as the one when tumblr banned porn on their website and the internet in general gets even worse.

I don't like the precedent of the government deciding which websites are acceptable. Unless there is a clear security reason to do so (which I haven't seen evidence for). As much as I dislike brainrot and slop, I have to call it like I see it. Its a slippery slope to becoming more like China, ironically enough.

Correct. It sets a bad precedent. Although tiktok being gone is good, the reason why it's gone is not. Time will tell if this will happen again, let's hope it doesn't.

Also, it's funny to think that tiktok is getting banned just in the US but everyone is talking about it as if it isn't available in other countries in the world. Goes to show that companies only care about the US market.

Aside from getting location data and camera usage (if you had those enabled) as i understood it was siphoning anything you had in your clipboard data and sending it off; And being one who uses generated passwords those complex outputs tend only to work as copy/paste... I'd consider that a security threat.

Not only that but personal information be it addresses, phone numbers, paragraphs of text you're rearranging while texting, bank information, etc... Even moreso if it was someone in the military with information like state secrets.

You can infer a lot of information from metadata, and even more from blatent copied text.

This is horribly naive of me to say, but, out of all the gigantic nightmare-corporations, I actually do trust Apple the most. They certainly keep a lot of personal data, but they infamously don't give it up, even to the federal authorities, so I guess if I had to choose one company to show my internet history to, it'd be them.

As someone who isn't American, I trust American companies (all foreign-owned entities operating within my country under essentially [and certainly in practice] zero restrictions) with my information more than those from any other country, even my own. That's a knock against the rest of the world, not praise to the USA.

It's hard to say really..On one hand, I don't use the app itself and I can see how it's a national security issue and why they are treating it as such. On the other hand, I'm not sure if I'm 100% with the government completely removing something from service like this.

I trust Apple as of right now, but who knows what happens in the future with their leadership? It is concerning that they have so much access to the populace's information. Then again, the government probably benefits from leveraging that information to their ends.

TikTok has been a known privacy and security risk for years now. I'm not upset that the US government is taking action against it, but they shouldn't target only one company. IMO, it would be better if they instituted wider data and privacy protections like the EU's GDPR.

I don’t use TikTok for the same reason I don’t use twitter, whenever I hear about them it’s people using them to make brain rot and getting off on being superior to others. I’ve heard about the problem the art community has on there with bullying actually children. They don’t think about what they’re posting, the fact that the other people on the platform are real people too. I find a lot of people lack empathy or critical thinking no matter where you go though, but fast past platforms don’t help, especially when it promotes people being terrible to each other.

I have mixed feelings I think TikTok was a mistake to begin with, but people don’t like being told what to do, and the communities on TikTok won’t just go away they’ll just find other platforms to spread their filth to.

Tim also gives Facebook shadow profile example of how the metadata can be used to construct a lot of data on you even if you never use Facebook (nevermind too many sites have facebook/google scripts on them)

These comments aren't it. TikTok is a valuable resource for many people. I've used it since 2017 and loved it. My whole family did, and so did 170 million other people. The fact that everyone here is saying, "it's just brain rot" are just listening to the propaganda and negativity. There's a lot of positivity on TikTok. Educational resources too. I also can't believe people here are falling for the "US security risk" nonsense. I don't want the government telling me what I can and cannot access. Many jobs are lost. Just because you don't like it or agree with it doesn't mean it's bad. You don't have to use it. I deleted my Facebook and X accounts today and joined Bluesky.

US companies are selling our data left and right, but that's okay? This is about controlling the narrative and silencing the masses. This is bad for ANY platform to be silenced. Not just TikTok. IT needs to be up to the people to decide what to do.
