TikTok is being shut off in the U.S. soon

That.... doesn't make sense at all. If they really are potential enemies, why are we doing business with them?
Corporate greed.

By using them as boogeymen and an excuse to arrest "communists"? /s
He's not talking about MCCarthyism, he's talking about the Chinese Government having its hands in everything, and our corporate overlords selling us out to them.

Seems like China and the USA are too dependent on each other economically for anything to escalate too heavily. They need the jobs and we need our cheap electronics and dollar store crap.

I don't know enough about how Chinese businesses work to make such claims

From what i understand ALL businesses have to register and be part of the CCP. If you are an external company you have to co-join with a company that is part of the CCP. So there is no middle ground. You have to be part of the CCP to do business within the CCP's area.

The CCP can then step in any time and say, steal schematics and intellectual property, removing the R&D part and just sell a finished product and undercut you, or do whatever they want, as it's illegal to refuse.

Well hopefully they add the option to mute certain threads in the future
Politics inevitably will crop up everywhere; I just hope things calm down to sanity.

But i have to agree, politics and religion (much like years in the past) should be kept close to the breast. Otherwise it inevitably enters shouting matches and no one wins.

You know… this would be a great time to bring back Vine. ;)
This is the most pleasant words Logan Paul will hear. Don’t tell him or he’ll wet his pants.

Well said 👍

It actually, literally, really is, this upcoming Sunday.

What do you guys think about this whole situation – about TikTok being so closely scrutinized by the American government under threat of foreign interference? Is this going to affect you or anyone you know? Are you an active TikTok user who's going to "switch over" to another platform? I'd genuinely love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.
I think, if anything, there should more-so be a restriction on such algorithms that are designed to keep people interested for as long as possible. It's all well & good banning TikTok, but what's so different about Instagram, or YouTube Shorts, or Snapchat, or Twitter, or Facebook? Also mind that TikTok wasn't the first of its kind being a social media site focusing on short-form content, we had Vine before it, albeit a lot more simple & the videos were much shorter. People will just go elsewhere if TikTok isn't available.

Entirely pointless even if I'm not affected as someone who never used it. The only substantial difference conservatives have been able to conjure up as a justification for the ban is that while it is spyware much like every other social media platform, they aren't the ones controlling the reigns of this one.

That said I'm sure the handful of users who want to continue using it will find a workaround, though how many do so to stick around will decide how worthwhile it is to do so or not.

It's a nice sentiment but it's also one of those things that is impossible to truly legislate against because the people in charge have no idea what these things are whilst being in the pocket of these social media companies to begin with. Even if they did try though, the algorithms themselves are endlessly malleable to constantly exist within the grey areas of whatever law would be cooked up.

Social media is a depressing pandora's box that while having a few upsides feels like an impossible-to-topple hellscape.

I feel like communist China is the USSR of the 21st century, and we (USA) should treat them accordingly.
The USSR wasn't even the USSR of the 20th century, at least not in the way most Americans still think of it anyways. They sucked, but in few-if-any ways that are unique to them.

I'm honestly way behind the times, so I wouldn't be surprised if people all-around me used it and I just didn't know. I'm literally Gloria:

But, as of right now, the only person I know who uses the platform ain't even in the US. Doesn't really affect me, but it sucks for anyone who genuinely got some enjoyment out of it.
