It actually, literally, really is, this upcoming Sunday.

What do you guys think about this whole situation – about TikTok being so closely scrutinized by the American government under threat of foreign interference? Is this going to affect you or anyone you know? Are you an active TikTok user who's going to "switch over" to another platform? I'd genuinely love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

But personally, TikTok is stupid, pure brainrot and yes, Chinese spyware. That said, the government shouldn't restrict the ability to use such a platform for those who want to use it despite all of that. First Amendment and all that.

I like to think that we're all mature enough to discuss this matter without delving into rule-breaking political arguments, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! 😉

I'm more interested in how this will impact people here who actually use the platform, anyways. I sure don't, but I know a lot of people use it more than anything else, and I think the fact they're having it taken away from them is kind of nutty... what else are they gonna do, now?

People are already migrating to different platforms with similar concerning business structures, like RedNote, which is also Chinese. You can't control what people want to do online by banning specific apps. Just like you can't control piracy by shutting down a few websites. Like a hydra, cut off one head, two more will appear.

Unless I'm missing something, that makes the TikTok ban a simple PR stunt. Nothing more, nothing less.

My least political answer is that information is being broadcast on TikTok that the US government can't control, whether that's political propaganda or talking points (false or otherwise) that they don't want to be accessible by the mainstream. Same reason they're slowly banning younger people from participating from the Internet, it's not about protecting them. If they cared they would have regulated adult material years ago and actually done something about it. This sudden change of heart is only because they want to restrict the free flow of information.

As for TikTok it's mostly brain rot and media that focuses on trying to farm attention at any cost, I don't particularly like it. It incentivizes terrible behaviour and very low quality mean spirited content. It's a little too close to the depiction of dystopia you used to see in 1980s movies where society was essentially rotting, very nihilistic, jaded, life is cheap and nothing matters. It's awful. There's occasionally some material there that's helpful but the majority of it is bottom of the barrel slop content for people that make me feel like a genius.

tl;dr We're not losing anything valuable and I don't like the site but it sets a bad precedent for internet censorship.

Don't live in the USA, but I do live in a country that has banned sites like Rumble because certain influencers that got blacklisted used the site and the owner of Rumble refused to ban the user in the name of our goverment. So I guess nothing new here, at least for me...

Yeah, there's no way to talk about it without getting into politics. I'd say that unless TikTok poses a threat to national security, the government shouldn't be restricting access to any website. I don't know enough about TikTok to say with certainty whether it is a threat or not.

TikTok is headquartered in China, and as such, is really just a puppet of the People's Republic of China. Like TenPenny.
So, TikTok is Tim Sweeney.

I don't know enough about how Chinese businesses work to make such claims, but I have heard those sentiments. Supposedly, every Chinese app is filled with spyware according to some. Not sure if it is xenophobia or truth. In any case, its not like American webapps aren't doing the same thing and selling our information to AI companies.

I don't use it, and I'm not an american, so I don't have much to say other than that America sure is quick to shut down "spyware" as long as it's not their own, and that I wouldn't want to shut down an app just because I don't like it, same as Twitter or Reddit or whatever.

All imma say is Chinese government spy on us bad American Government spy on us Good apparently 😭. I do agree though that TikTok is very addictive just like other social medias. And people spread a lot of false information and no one does research on shit anymore cause no one has the attention span to read an article

China is an allegedly communist society, and as such, the means of production are owned and operated by the Chinese government. Everyone is literally a Government employee. As such, TikTok doesn't have to sell your information to a Third Party, it is that third party.
Allegedly?

Also people don’t care since this shutdown people have moved to a Chinese run app called RedNote people don’t care about spyware because America does it to so what’s the difference 🤦🏽‍♂️

Never had one, so I can't say I'll miss it. I don't think banning it is a popular choice given how many people use it, and I assume for some people it's their livelihood, I'm just personally not affected.

I feel like communist China is the USSR of the 21st century, and we (USA) should treat them accordingly.

Thats my perspective as an American in my 40s, anyway.

That.... doesn't make sense at all. If they really are potential enemies, why are we doing business with them?
