Oh that's the Family Computer Network System also known as the Famicom Network System. In 1988, Nintendo released the Family Computer Network System in Japan, a modem-based peripheral for the Famicom that allowed users to connect to a dial-up network and access a range of non-gaming services.

Basically a modem for the Famicom which allowed it to connect to its own version of the internet, giving you access to everything from cheat codes to the weather forecast.

That reminds me of the time SEGA showed off the modem for the Genesis by having two guys sitting in game stores on opposite sides of the city play a game of baseball, but without telling the people watching them play that it was an online match until they were way into it and began piecing together for themselves that it didn't look like any game against the computer they had ever seen.

It was excellent showmanship.

More full on feature expansion peripherals would be welcome. Imagine a modern console with an internals access hatch and the laptop computer sales model where one option is cheaper because it includes one less RAM stick.
