Thoughts on this beast?

I think you're supposed to plug it into your head. Then things go total V.R., or did the advert say if you accidentally plug it into your head visit the E.R.?
28k dial-up matrix, the console was mainly used for gambling not for e.r. visits

I love this thing but also sort of hate it because a lot of content from those days got lost because of it.
(I.e. sites shut down and people not being able to source data from these devices. I'm grumpy at the SatellaView especially because they lost entire games!)

And then they had to be recreated off of videos of the gameplay, like F-ZERO for the SatellaView.

You got it!
Did you know the Famicom detective club games released (and rereleased) for switch aren't games 1,2,3 but rather 1,2,4 because 3 was a satellaview game? Fans are doing their best to get as much as they can back but it is an arduous task due to factors such as Nintendo taking extremely bad care of the game data they were handed for the Satellaview.

It's proof that the industry was already set on it's current course even back then. People always like to blame Microsoft for how the Xbox 360 pushed digital content, or Valve for doing the same with Steam, but Nintendo used the idea from this to push out the Sattelaview which allowed you to download digital only games that would be lost when downloading another. The Mega Drive had the Sega Channel as well, idk if that was in the US though. I know the Sattelaview wasn't. Wild stuff.

Sega Channel was available in the US, I had it. Including XBAND, way ahead of its time.

I do want one but I don't have a Gamecube yet sacrilegious I know but I need to catch up on my Nintendo consoles.

I love weird things that stack on and under consoles. I have the Satellaview and Dreamcast Karaoke Unit. View attachment 89783View attachment 89784
They are pretty when they are new. It's when the dust and grime gathers and the novelty wears out, or when things don't connect like they used to, bent wires, etcetera, etcetera... We love our novelties for a while, though.

Are cults inherently religious entities? I'm pretty sure Nintendo at least had its own faction in the "console wars". Aside from that, a lot of people see the Gamecube as one of the subjectively better consoles, period.

I like that last sentence, period. (End of discussion, it's been decided)

And just to clarify, the period is meant to convey that this isn't about overall capabilities, because obviously the gamecube has long since been surpassed, but a fondness for the design, experience, and library that transcends generations. Like people just generally think highly of that console and feel it's one of the all time greats.
