Thoughts about Clair Obscur:Expedition 33?

Been stupid busy lately, but I think I'm about halfway through the game. At any rate, I'm pretty comfortable saying this is the best turn-based combat system ever, and the "acting", sense of humor, and ohmygod The Music are all incredible.

The sales keep rolling in. At this point it may outsell every Final Fantasy game in the past 3 years.

It's not even two full weeks yet, holy shit. ::zeldapoggers

Definitely deserved it tho. It'll be hard to top this one for sure, Sandfall Interactive really just started that path for those who come after. The next game by them gonna be placed a really high bar with this.

Well deserved. From the graphics, to the art, to the characters, to the storytelling, to the music, to the combat system, this game does so many things so well that I'm happy it's being celebrated. It's one of my favorite RPG's of this style since Lost Odyssey.

Famitsu Sales post-Golden Week revealed

4th place (first appearance)
[PS5] Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
9825 copies
(total 9825 copies) / Sega / April 24, 2025

It's pretty damn good physical sales numbers considering most of Japanese gamers would rather buy it on Steam PC or use Game Pass instead for foreign titles.
Sega really fucked it up by not stocking more, especially due to many stores across Japan being outta stocks right on GW.

Are the parry and dodging mechanics really hard as people are talking online?

I can't say from firsthand knowledge but I hear the game being compared to souls games. If you are able to parry and dodge in those games, I think you should be ok in this one.

It's about the same as Soulslike games, much tighter in fact. If you can get good with timing in this game you will find most Soulslike quite easy in comparison later.

I wouldn't call it easy - most attacks don't have visual cues so learning the longer enemy combos is a matter of their character animation and how much they telegraph a hit, kinda like Punch-Out!...oh shit, is that why I love this? - but autosaves are forgiving, you can opt for more defensive builds to allow for more mistakes, and it's not *really* tough until the last third of the game or so.

Tried it on the game pass, not for me, but i've been hearing awesome things! The first 45 minutes was really incredible story wise, I just wasn't a big fan of the combat personally.

We did it fam, Clair Obscur has matched sales with the top of the JRPG industry. (FFXVI and Rebirth are around 3.3ish million in sales) High budget JRPG renaissance here we go!

33 days, 3.3 milion copies sold. And Japanese physical copies are still selling really well with absolutely rave reviews from the users.

That does it. This is the undisputed Game of The Year and even probably would made it to the Game of All Time for most.

Interview with E33 devs.

"We didn't want to tell people what's right or what's wrong, this is the message. We wanted to raise questions and allow the player through the journey and their own values and life experiences find their own meaning within the game."

The success of this game is crazy. Its on pace to sell as much as OG Final Fantasy 7. Wild.
