i mean given how the melee community acts im glad they werent given any legitimacy by nintendo but on the other hand evo is lame now and that is as official as we can get so...
The Smash community and the FGC are two separate entities. There's like no player cross over. (and no I don't want to start the "is smash a fighting game" debate, I'm purely talking about the scenes)
I was genuinely happy when they took that shit out of evo. Their top 8s always dragged on for far too long.

It's always impressive seeing how far people can take a game like Smash Bros., but man oh man is that scene always full of the most basement-dwelling of neckbeards. And, like you said, top 8s are a major drag. They are almost always the same few characters at the top and they go on for an eternity.
Yeah, I used to love Maximillian back in the day too, but you're right that ever since Capcom launched their partner program he's just become a shill now essentially. Very rarely do you get any actual real opinions from him anymore, just blind positivity and getting his audience ready for the next new thing.
Like I said; they dug themselves into this hole. For years they kept talking about wanting more 'legitimacy' and recognition from the companies. Well, the companies got involved, a lot of the people don't really like what it's turned into, but there's no way to reverse what has been done so now they've got to lie in the bed they've made for themselves. I don't support Capcom anymore, haven't for awhile actually. For their fighting games; SFV was the nail in the coffin for me, and as for their other games; I haven't bought a Capcom game since 2019 when the RE2 remake came out. Don't really plan on jumping back into any of their franchises, nor do I have a desire too. Even if the long-awaited Darkstalkers revival or the Capcom Vs./Capcom All-stars game idea they've been teasing since like 2012 do eventually happen; I don't even really trust modern Capcom to do them justice.
In a manner of speaking, fighting games can never truly 'branch out' so long as they're shackled to Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. That one title's gameplay mechanics, character archetypes, and presentation, are too closely linked to the genre's image for the core FGC to take different schools of fighting-game-design seriously.

I mean my problems are more on the companies business practices more than anything you’ve mentioned. Not saying your point is necessarily wrong though.

i dunno i feel like while the basis for most games came from sf2, theres been enough remixing and reiteration that we can say we moved on from it as the inspiration
i will concede though that the genre has yet to get some (largely accepted) insane shift in the formula like from doom to halo or cod4
i personally think smash counts and ill double down and say for honor counts too
Break free from the FGC hype cycle.
Big reason I don't engage with the FGC much anymore is because I got tired of the discourse loop. They have like 5 topics they rotate in and out. I gets very tiring after a while. "This game will save us", this game is dead now", "old game is better than new game", "this game is over simplified", "motion inputs are good/bad", "is high execution important?", "esports vs grassroots" etc. I just don't care anymore. Just leave me alone and let me play in peace.
Yeah it's tiring. I've been playing fighting games for years now. Only recently do I feel what they made me feel in the beginning. Where I can watch tournament/clips of games and just play them because found them cool. FGC twitter needlessly comparing games against each other for a reaction. It doesn't feel like some of these people actually loves the genre in it's entirety. They just play one game and whine about the rest. I'm much happier not touch those parts of the scene. Still love what it did for me though <3
The American FGC died with the decline of arcades. They've been parading its corpse around and chasing eSports money with it for at least the last 15 years.
i dont like the FGC at all mainly because of just fucking rude they are to anything even remotely outside of their circle and something about the idea of a community around an entire genre like that just makes me feel kind of "ill" whenever i think about it and it's hard to explain why

im not that familiar with that archetype but i also dont think about the FGC that often despite playing fighting games from time to time... you can tell i like dead or alive because of what im listing as problems
I enjoyed the FGC before "Esports" started to become a big part of it. That happened around the end of Ultra Street Fighter 4 and leading into SFV. The grassroots nature of it was a lot more appealing. Most weren't doing it for money either, just the love of the game.
I stick to a niche corner of the FGC both in that it's about niche games and that it's a small circle. We talk about big games but also about all the indie stuff most people have never heard of, and older stuff that has been mostly forgotten until now. It's nice and cool. Every now and then I see the shark fins of whatever nonsense the broader FGC is up to like this constant calling for a savior and am glad I'm not around them. I'm confused what exactly Upcoming Video Game will be saving the FGC from.
Also I have only barely watched him, but I will say that Max personally funding a Marvel vs Capcom Infinite mod was pretty cool of him and I doubt the Capcom suits told him to do that.
so i've been just vegetating the last few days and watching a lot of fgc youtube; i don't interact much with the "mainstream" guys in this space and what they post but titles like these are a reminder of why that is the case
look i know what clickbait is and that you gotta build up hype for what you're gonna talk about and the meta you gotta play in the algorithm but like on the other hand can you even guess which game this is in reference to without looking it up?

for clarity, the video itself is fine and not like too negative to the genre although there are bits i disagree with
this example isn't as extreme as others (like pre-release 2xko) but it does come off as like putting everything else down just to prop up the subject of the video
these games are all cool in unique ways that don't really work with direct comparisons (to me anyways), so it's kind of just a disservice to the game and community to talk about games in such a black-and-white fashion
The FGC always sucked donkey balls and I say this as someone who always played fighting games throughout my life. I enjoyed them simply because it was the stuff that all my friends gathered around to play and have laughs and sometimes even learn stuff. Even to this day I'm always talking to a friend and just labbing and learning stuff.
The thing with the FGC is that as long as companies keep fucking up, they will keep getting back to old games, whether it's because the new editions are poor and lack content (SF 30th Anniversary/MKLK on release), if it's a franchise people don't REALLY care about despite the internet talk (Fatal Fury), overpriced games (MVC Collection), if the game just straight up sucks (SFV/Tekken 8/MVCI), or if people just don't want to buy games (Fightcade).
I like games like KOF and MK but I'm not going around pretending NRS saved the FGC because they absolutely didn't, not to mention when the companies do a total reverse psychology on the consumers and the community just rolls with it. I just stick to the stuff I enjoy and if there is something I dislike, I just stay away from it and play online once in a full moon. It used to be fun watching people play stuff like MK9 and SF4 but now it's freaking agonizing to watch some SF league to see whoever puts the other in the corner and throw loops them to death, because you know, everyone loved that in the previous game.
I never gave a damn about LoL and a fighting game ain't gonna convince me otherwise. xD
The only thing that needs saving in the FGC is the FGC itself.
