The Smash community and the FGC are two separate entities. There's like no player cross over. (and no I don't want to start the "is smash a fighting game" debate, I'm purely talking about the scenes)

It's always impressive seeing how far people can take a game like Smash Bros., but man oh man is that scene always full of the most basement-dwelling of neckbeards. And, like you said, top 8s are a major drag. They are almost always the same few characters at the top and they go on for an eternity.

Yeah, I used to love Maximillian back in the day too, but you're right that ever since Capcom launched their partner program he's just become a shill now essentially. Very rarely do you get any actual real opinions from him anymore, just blind positivity and getting his audience ready for the next new thing.

Like I said; they dug themselves into this hole. For years they kept talking about wanting more 'legitimacy' and recognition from the companies. Well, the companies got involved, a lot of the people don't really like what it's turned into, but there's no way to reverse what has been done so now they've got to lie in the bed they've made for themselves. I don't support Capcom anymore, haven't for awhile actually. For their fighting games; SFV was the nail in the coffin for me, and as for their other games; I haven't bought a Capcom game since 2019 when the RE2 remake came out. Don't really plan on jumping back into any of their franchises, nor do I have a desire too. Even if the long-awaited Darkstalkers revival or the Capcom Vs./Capcom All-stars game idea they've been teasing since like 2012 do eventually happen; I don't even really trust modern Capcom to do them justice.

That one title's gameplay mechanics, character archetypes, and presentation, are too closely linked to the genre's image for the core FGC to take different schools of fighting-game-design seriously.

i dunno i feel like while the basis for most games came from sf2, theres been enough remixing and reiteration that we can say we moved on from it as the inspiration

i will concede though that the genre has yet to get some (largely accepted) insane shift in the formula like from doom to halo or cod4

i personally think smash counts and ill double down and say for honor counts too

Break free from the FGC hype cycle.
Big reason I don't engage with the FGC much anymore is because I got tired of the discourse loop. They have like 5 topics they rotate in and out. I gets very tiring after a while. "This game will save us", this game is dead now", "old game is better than new game", "this game is over simplified", "motion inputs are good/bad", "is high execution important?", "esports vs grassroots" etc. I just don't care anymore. Just leave me alone and let me play in peace.

Yeah it's tiring. I've been playing fighting games for years now. Only recently do I feel what they made me feel in the beginning. Where I can watch tournament/clips of games and just play them because found them cool. FGC twitter needlessly comparing games against each other for a reaction. It doesn't feel like some of these people actually loves the genre in it's entirety. They just play one game and whine about the rest. I'm much happier not touch those parts of the scene. Still love what it did for me though <3
