PC The Steam Machine lives!!

I gotta say I do not understand any of the hype surrounding this, it feels like it'll fail the same way the last Steam Machine did but I hope I'm just missing something.
The original Steam machines had a big problem with most games not being compatible with Linux. That has since been mostly fixed by Valve through their Proton efforts.

Honestly I dunno if that would make it automatically working much better.

But let's wait and see as much as the hype may fall a bit after a while.

It's a more powerful hardware kit running the Steam Deck experience. We already do know how well Proton works, even with desktop PCs running Linux.

It's totally absurd that there are rampant doubts based on anything here, other than the unknown pricing.

I have the old Steam Machines, I am typing on an ASM2 right now. I have thrown Linux & Proton at them. I am absolutely sure that it is "automatically working much better"

I don't think anybody really needs Debbie Downer doomers showing up to chime in within 1 day of figurative Valve Christmas, waiting for the hype to die down, hoping that it will somehow justify or clarify any ignorance toward a software stack that has been constantly refined for 7 years now, one which already is the backbone that drives a 4 year old flagship handheld console product.

Let's wait and see, folks. Steam Machine hype might disappear and prove Valve to be doomed.

Been seeing a lot of clickbait youtube titles about Valve killing Xbox. Why gaming youtubers are so obsessed with Xbox's alleged downfall is fascinating to me, especially when Phil Spencer doesn't care if people have yet ANOTHER means to buy Halo Reach (since what else is there to play on Steam besides experimental indies & anime visual novels), but to be honest, people were saying the same thing about the Steam Deck and the Switch. What happened? People kept their Switches, the Switch 2 ate the Steam Deck's lunch, and the Steam Deck just remains a relatively niche platform due to the fact that everyone has smart phones, android tablets, Switches, emulation devices & gaming PC's. Heck, most people I know who have a Deck emulate Switch games on it more than they play their Steam games.

I don't really see who exactly the Valve Cube is meant for. PC Gaming enthusiasts already have their main home rigs that are likely more powerful than this thing (or can be upgraded for cheaper). It doesn't have the portability appeal of the Steam Deck (which compensates for the Steam Deck's lack of customization & premium price point) or the ROG Ally that allow those devices to at least compliment your home computer and/or PS5/Xbox setup. And most people already have a Switch 1/2, a Playstation 5 or Xbox Series, which are likely going to be within the same price point as this thing, and they all already offer an array of services out the box (or in Nintendo's case, exclusive software) to get started playing games without hassle. I feel like the Cube mainly appeals to Valve simps who just want another means or another novelty piece to play their Steam Libraries ontop of the multiple other ways they already have, because Valve nerds have more money than sense and hyper-fixate on minor performance issues the average gaming customer doesn't give a damn about.

Plus, if the Steam Deck is any indication, Valve has shown it does not have the means to manufacture or distribute its proprietary hardware on the same scale as Nintendo, Sony or Playstation. Most likely, these things will not be so much mass produced as they will be produced on-demand. They may develop their niche group of supporters to justify continued upgrades, but I've yet to see what others are saying that this is Valve finally going toe-to-toe with the Big 3.

Yeah but it's like an overclocked mini PC, I've seen those around $400-$500, and those have much higher specs, like this one just for example purposes. Entry level builds have dedicated gpus/cpus, more ram, higher wattage requirements and at least a 1TB SSD.

I have a little pc part builder list and I could squeeze it to $540 if I didn't add a GPU and tried to match the specs. I still don't see a grand; but lets say you are right about the price; that would put this machine in such a bizarre "who is this for" scenario.
You can also get a refurbished pre-built and a low-profile graphics card for less than 300 dollars.

Yeah, I figured that Valve would try to make the Steam Machine again. It'll probably be a good console for £300-400 and a good option to play PC games if you (understandably) don't want to touch Windows. You could do the whole "buy a used PC and install SteamOS on it"-thing and get it cheaper, it is worth noting.

I'm still waiting for official racing wheel support though. Automobilista 2 is a fully Steam Deck Verified game and I can confirm that it runs perfectly on the Steam Deck. I own a Steam Deck, I'm a racing game nut, I see the potential, can Valve partner with Thrustmaster/Logitech/Fanatec/Cammus/whoever to make racing wheels compatible with SteamOS? I would really like to see that.

The controller is probably the most interesting to me.

Factor in Tariffs and the fact that the Steam Deck is already 700 bucks, and I can't see either model being under a grand.
The entry level Steam Deck is £350. Granted I live in the UK but surely that's an over exaggeration.

Just gonna put here that Valve making a PC hybrid and people being excited for it just proves Xbox right and furthers the thought that people are praying for Xbox's downfall based on the brand name alone at this point.

Still haven't seen one produce any steam. 0/10 False Advertising

With Portal's 20th anniversary coming up in 2027, maybe they should re-skin it to be some sort of orange box...

If valve actually marketed this to the general public this has the change to disrupt and permanently alter the console market in a way not seen since the launch of the Original Playstation.

The steamdeck can already run every PS5 & Xbox series X game- And that's a handheld.
A gamecube sized computer, booting steam OS/Big picture that has Steam sales & the ability to still access de-listed games- something not possible on any console?

Gaben, please MARKET THIS

And lets not forget that if some one has the capability to browse a file manager, every Nintendo game becomes emulatable with many having online functionality.
No more paying $80 for a 20 year of bare boned port.

Same goes for installing none-steam games. Valve has never implemented ecosystem restrictions this can just as easily be a GoG, MAME or Sega machine.

Valve really is the poster child as to why private corporations can be a force for good, they just require good ethical management.
Something that a public corporation with its competing shareholders is fundamentally capable of achieving due to conflict of interests.

I already have a Steam Deck so I don't have much use for this. The Steam Controller is interesting though, and depending on how much it costs I might pick it up.

The thing that makes me the most excited about this slate of new Valve hardware isn't something they explicitly announced but seems to be heavily alluded to: the Steam Machine can stream Steam games to the Steam Frame, and the Steam Frame itself is ARM-based but runs SteamOS, which itself is based on Arch Linux with a KDE desktop environment. Hopefully, this all means that SteamVR is finally, finally coming to Linux.
Given Valve's heavy focus on Linux as of late, I was kind of surprised that SteamVR didn't work on Linux without a lot of finagling. As an active VRChat player, one of the only reasons I haven't made the jump from Windows 11 to Linux on my main desktop is simply because of how difficult VR was to get working on Linux.
